Book excerpt: I take the opportunity given by the publication of the second volume of this series to deal with a criticism on the first which affects all. I am therein described as an “adherent” of “Shaktaism” and as “commending” the acceptance of such doctrine, to others. It is true that I think that this doctrine has been misunderstood and has been the subject (overall) of unjust judgments. I think also that it is, in its highest presentment, a grand and inspiring system (by which I do not mean that it is the only one, or that it is without defect); otherwise probably I should not have concerned myself with it. I desire however to say here that I do not write as an “adherent” of this, or any other philosophical system or religious sect whatever, but as a free-thinker and free-companion: “Neither Burgundian nor Armagnac.” Nullìus addictus jurare in verba magistri. But as I have said elsewhere in describing Shākta teaching and Vedānta I write from that standpoint. Nor do I, pace my critic, make light of, and still less deny, the utility of Reason or its efficacy to give us the truth within the system of which it is a part. But the Truth as it lies beyond that system is directly realised as it is in Itself, that is beyond Mind not by Reason but by a Full Experience (Samādhi) which is not a “sleep” except to the gross world and is an awakening in the supersensible world. Those who talk in this fashion show want of knowledge of their own Scripture. There the highest praise is bestowed on reason. See for instance the Chapter on Vichāra in the Yoga-Vāshishtha. Moreover, Vedānta does not accept the intuitionalism which discards intellect. On the contrary the Brihadāranyaka Upanishad says that the Self must be thought upon and deeply pondered.

Book The Purpose of Power

Download or read book The Purpose of Power written by Alicia Garza and published by One World. This book was released on 2020-10-20 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential guide to building transformative movements to address the challenges of our time, from one of the country’s leading organizers and a co-creator of Black Lives Matter “Excellent and provocative . . . a gateway [to] urgent debates.”—Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor, The New Yorker NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR BY Time • Marie Claire • Kirkus Reviews In 2013, Alicia Garza wrote what she called “a love letter to Black people” on Facebook, in the aftermath of the acquittal of the man who murdered seventeen-year-old Trayvon Martin. Garza wrote: Black people. I love you. I love us. Our lives matter. With the speed and networking capacities of social media, #BlackLivesMatter became the hashtag heard ’round the world. But Garza knew even then that hashtags don’t start movements—people do. Long before #BlackLivesMatter became a rallying cry for this generation, Garza had spent the better part of two decades learning and unlearning some hard lessons about organizing. The lessons she offers are different from the “rules for radicals” that animated earlier generations of activists, and diverge from the charismatic, patriarchal model of the American civil rights movement. She reflects instead on how making room amongst the woke for those who are still awakening can inspire and activate more people to fight for the world we all deserve. This is the story of one woman’s lessons through years of bringing people together to create change. Most of all, it is a new paradigm for change for a new generation of changemakers, from the mind and heart behind one of the most important movements of our time.

Book When They Call You a Terrorist Young Adult Edition

Download or read book When They Call You a Terrorist Young Adult Edition written by Patrisse Khan-Cullors and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patrisse Khan-Cullors' and asha bandele's instant New York Times bestseller, When They Call You a Terrorist is now adapted for the YA audience with photos and journal entries! A movement that started with a hashtag--#BlackLivesMatter--on Twitter spread across the nation and then across the world. From one of the co-founders of the Black Lives Matter movement comes a poetic memoir and reflection on humanity. Necessary and timely, Patrisse Khan-Cullors’ story asks us to remember that protest in the interest of the most vulnerable comes from love. Leaders of the Black Lives Matter movement have been called terrorists, a threat to America. But in truth, they are loving women whose life experiences have led them to seek justice for those victimized by the powerful. In this meaningful, empowering account of survival, strength, and resilience, Cullors and asha bandele seek to change the culture that declares innocent black life expendable.

Book American Presidential Power and the War on Terror Does the Constitution Matter

Download or read book American Presidential Power and the War on Terror Does the Constitution Matter written by Justin DePlato and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-09-01 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the use of presidential power during the War on Terror. Justin DePlato joins the debate on whether the Constitution matters in determining how each branch of the federal government should use its power to combat the War on Terror. The actions and words of Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama are examined. DePlato's findings support the theory that executives use their own prerogative in determining what emergency powers are and how to use them. According to DePlato, the Presidents argue that their powers are implied in Article II of the Constitution, not expressed. This conclusion renders the Constitution meaningless in times of crisis. The author reveals that Presidents are becoming increasingly cavalier and that the nation should consider adopting an amendment to the Constitution to proffer expressed executive emergency powers.
