This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of the Reverend William Law, Vol. 9 of 9 The 'three Letters to a Lady inclined to enter the Romish Communion' are now for the first time included in the Rev. W. Law's works. They were written during the years 1731-2 but there is some uncertainty respecting the identity of the person to whom they were originally addressed, which is however a matter of only slight consequence. For the appearance of these letters in this republication Readers are indebted to the Rev. F. Sanders, Vicar of Hoylake, who kindly lent his copy for this purpose; and whose remark respecting william law's works - that he knew of no author so likely to do good in this restless and impatient age - is well worthy of repetition here. During the progress of this work through the Press, further writings by the Rev. William law have been discovered; which, together with his other correspondence and various matters of interest in connection therewith will - with an Index or Summary to his complete works - be issued in a volume of Miscellanies, of which due notice will be given. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Development of Anglican Moral Theology is the successor volume to The Origins of Anglican Moral Theology. It describes how Anglican theologians interacted closely with the moral philosophers of their day while providing a pastoral resource in the fast-changing period between 1680-1950. The book shows how vibrant and intellectually rigorous the tradition was, and includes detailed studies of the sermons of Butler, Wesley and Newman, the writings of William Law and Coleridge, and the later work of Maurice, Gore, Scott Holland, Moberly, William Temple and Kirk. This is the first account of this lively tradition of moral theology.

Book Collected Critical Writings

Download or read book Collected Critical Writings written by Geoffrey Hill and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 827 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Collected Critical Writings gathers more than forty years of Hill's published criticism, in a revised final form, and also adds much new work. It will serve as the canonical volume of criticism by Hill, the pre-eminent poet-critic whom A. N. Wilson has called "probably the best writer alive, in verse or in prose." In his criticism Hill ranges widely, investigating both poets (including Jonson, Dryden, Hopkins, Whitman, Eliot, and Yeats ) and prose writers (such as Tyndale, Clarendon, Hobbes, Burton, Emerson, and F. H. Bradley). He is also steeped in the historical context - political, poetic, and religious - of the writers he studies. Most importantly, he brings texts and contexts into new and telling relations, neither reducing texts to the circumstances of their utterance nor imagining that they can float free of them. A number of the essays have already established themselves as essential reading on particular subjects, such as his analysis of Vaughan's "The Night", his discussion of Gurney's poetry, and his critical account of The Oxford English Dictionary. Others confront the problems of language and the nature of value directly, as in "Our Word is Our Bond", "Language, Suffering, and Value", and "Poetry and Value". In all his criticism, Hill reveals literature to be an essential arena of civic intelligence.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of the Reverend William Law, Vol. 7 of 9 Difference, because he receives and uses them both in the same Spirit; Life and Death are equally welcome, because equally Parts of his Way to Eternity. For poor and miserable as this Life is, we have all of us free Access to all that is Great, and Good, and Happy, and carry within ourselves a Key to all the Treasures that Heaven has to bestow upon us.-we starve in the midst of Plenty, groan under Infirmities, with the Remedy in our own Hand; live and die without knowing and feeling any Thing of the Ofle, only Gooo', whilst we have it in our Power to know and enjoy it in as great a Reality, as we know and feel the Power of this World over us For Heaven is as near to our Souls, as this World is to our Bodies; and we are created, we are redeemed, to have our Conversation in it. God, the only Gaoa' of all intelligent Natures, is not an absent or distant God, but is more present in and to our Souls, than our own Bodies; and we are Strangers to Heaven, and without God in the World, for this only Reason, because we are void of that Spirit of Prayer, which alone can, and never fails to unite us with the One, only Good, and to open Heaven and the Kingdom of God within us. A Root set in the finest Soil, in the best Climate, and blessed with all that Sun, and Air, and Rain can do for it, is not in so sure a Way of its Growth to Perfection, as every Man may be, whose Spirit aspires after all that, which God is ready and infinitely desirous to give him. For the Sim meets not the springing Bud that stretches towards him with half that Certainty, as God, the Source of all Good, communicates him self to the Soul that longs to partake of Him. Book excerpt: 2012 Reprint of Original 1894 Edition. Exact facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Many have come to discover the writings of William Law through the publication of selections of his work edited by Andrew Murray. "A Serious Call to a Devout and Holy Life" (1728) deeply influenced the chief actors in the great Evangelical revival. John and Charles Wesley, George Whitefield, Henry Venn, Thomas Scott, and Thomas Adam all express their deep obligation to the author. "The Serious Call" also affected others deeply. Samuel Johnson, ] Gibbon, Lord Lyttelton and Bishop Home all spoke enthusiastically of its merits; and it is still the only work by which its author is popularly known. It has high merits of style, being lucid and pointed to a degree. Though not the most popular, perhaps the most interesting, original and suggestive of all Law's works are those he wrote in his later years, after he had become an enthusiastic admirer of Jacob Boehme, the Teutonic theosopher. From his earliest years, he had been deeply impressed with the piety, beauty and thoughtfulness of the writings of the Christian mystics. However, it was not till after his accidental meeting with the works of Boehme, about 1734, that pronounced mysticism appeared in his works.

Book The Terrorist Next Door

Download or read book The Terrorist Next Door written by Daniel Levitas and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2004-01-20 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: September 11, 2001, focused America's attention on the terrorist threat from abroad, but as the World Trade Center towers collapsed, domestic right-wing hate groups were celebrating in the United States. "Hallelu-Yahweh! May the WAR be started! DEATH to His enemies, may the World Trade Center BURN TO THE GROUND!" announced August Kreis of the paramilitary group, the Posse Comitatus. "We can blame no others than ourselves for our problems due to the fact that we allow ...Satan's children, called jews (sic) today, to have dominion over our lives." The Terrorist Next Door reveals the men behind far right groups like the Posse Comitatus - Latin for "power of the county" -- and the ideas that inspired their attempts to bring about a racist revolution in the United States. Timothy McVeigh was executed for killing 168 people when he bombed the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in 1995, but The Terrorist Next Door goes well beyond the destruction in Oklahoma City and takes readers deeper and more broadly inside the Posse and other groups that comprise the paramilitary right. From the emergence of white supremacist groups following the Civil War, through the segregationist violence of the civil rights era, the right-wing tax protest movement of the 1970s, the farm crisis of the 1980s and the militia movement of the 1990s, the book details the roots of the radical right. It also tells the story of men like William Potter Gale, a retired Army officer and the founder of the Posse Comitatus whose hate-filled sermons and calls to armed insurrection have fueled generations of tax protesters, militiamen and other anti-government zealots since the 1960s. Written by Daniel Levitas, a national expert on the origins and activities of white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups, The Terrorist Next Door is painstakingly researched and includes rich detail from official documents (including the FBI), private archives and confidential sources never before disclosed. In detailing these and other developments, The Terrorist Next Door will prove to be the most definitive history of the roots of the American militia movement and the rural radical right ever written.
