Book Pentecost To The Present Book Two

Download or read book Pentecost To The Present Book Two written by Jeff Oliver and published by Bridge Logos Inc. This book was released on 2017-04-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus once spoke of a time when men would sleep and an enemy would come and sow tares among the wheat. The Renaissance, the Enlightenment, and the Modern Age were just such a time. In this second installment, the reader will learn how signs and wonders played roles in the foundations of nearly every new state church, Free Church, and denomination. How Catholicism countered with its own reformation that included a revival of mysticism, a new army of spiritual soldiers, and the discovery of the New World. How restorationist movements countered the intellectual revolutions of their day with revivals of faith in the supernatural. How a decade-long prayer meeting shaped the future of revivalism affecting both England's Wesleyan Revival and America's First Great Awakening. How the French Revolution replaced Christianity with liberalism as the world's dominant ideology. How many Americans countered this new revolution with a Second Great Awakening. How Phoebe Palmer began the modern Holiness movement and Jeremiah Lanphier launched a worldwide Laymen's Prayer Revival. How many Americans reunited after the Civil War with a series of Holiness Camp Meetings, followed by a similar "Higher Life" movement in Britain, and later, a new stream of American healing ministries.

Book The Doctrines of Grace in an Unexpected Place

Download or read book The Doctrines of Grace in an Unexpected Place written by Mark R. Stevenson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2017-03-10 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does God sovereignly elect some individuals for salvation while passing others by? Do human beings possess free will to embrace or reject the gospel? Did Christ die equally for all people or only for some? These questions have long been debated in the history of the Christian church. Answers typically fall into one of two main categories, popularly known as Calvinism and Arminianism. The focus of this book is to establish how one nineteenth-century evangelical group, the Brethren, responded to these and other related questions. The Brethren produced a number of colorful leaders whose influence was felt throughout the evangelical world. Although many critics have assumed the movement's theology was Arminian, this book argues that the Brethren, with few exceptions, advocated Calvinistic positions. Yet there were some twists along the way! The movement's radical biblicism, passionate evangelism, and strong aversion to systematic theology and creeds meant they refused to label themselves as Calvinists even though they affirmed Calvinism's soteriological principles--the so-called doctrines of grace.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these days of uncivil public discourse—complete with trolling, hater comments, CAPSLOCKING, and generally acting like jerks towards each other—talking graciously about anything is becoming a lost art. Throw religion into the mix (“Well, my Bible says . . . ”) and you’ve got one huge toxic mess. Is it possible for Christians to become more thoughtful and gracious conversation partners as we talk through our theological disagreements? How can we keep from throwing around the term heretic! every time someone disagrees with us? And remember, it’s a big world out there. If arguing with other Christians isn’t difficult enough, how do we think about engaging members of other religions? What’s the point of talking with them? They don’t know God anyway, right? Then there are all those agnostics and atheists, accusing believers of ignorance and calling for the end of religion. Why should we even want to talk with these people? Aren’t they our enemies? What can we possibly learn from them? In this book, Jonathan Case explores, from a Christian theological perspective, what’s at stake in these conversations and suggests how to keep people talking through their disagreements about that most volatile subject: God.

Book The Meaning of Pentecost in Early Methodism

Download or read book The Meaning of Pentecost in Early Methodism written by Laurence W. Wood and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2002-09-23 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Fletcher's theology of Pentecost is generally unknown today, and this book is the first comprehensive treatise on this subject. His writings were in large part responsible for shaping the theology of early American Methodism, especially his treatise on Christian Perfection, which highlighted a theology of Pentecostal sanctification. Wood recounts the decisive influence Fletcher had on early Methodism, and shows that his writings were able to "control the opinions of the largest and most effective body of evangelical clergymen of the earth." Fletcher's views on the Holy Spirit were also relevant in the ecumenical movement, specifically with reference to the World Council of Churches Commission on Faith and Order held in Lima, Peru, in 1982. This group recommended the introduction of a liturgy of the Spirit in Christian baptism. For students and scholars or general readers interested in Methodist history and theology. Also a resource for pastors-helpful in developing a theology of Pentecost that will preach in a relevant way in the contemporary world.

This book offers a reader-friendly introduction to liberation theology by having scholars "from the margins" explore how questions of race and gender should be brought to bear on thirty classic theologians. Each short chapter gives historical background for the thinker, describes that thinker's most important contributions, then raises issues of concern for women and persons of color. Contributors include Rita Nakashima Brock, Cheryl A. Kirk-Duggan, Harold J. Recinos, M. Shawn Copeland, Kwok Pui-Lan, Joerg Rieger, and many others.

Download or read book True Christianity written by J. Russell Frazier and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-01-22 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John William Fletcher (1729-1785) was a seminal theologian during the early methodist movement and the Church of England in the eighteenth century. Best known for the Checks to Antinomianism, he worked out a theology of history to defend the church against the encroachment of antinomianism as a polemic against hyper-Calvinism, whose system of divine fiat and finished salvation, Fletcher believed, did not take seriously enough either the activity of God in salvation history or an individual believer's personal progress in salvation. Fletcher made the doctrine of accommodation a unifying principle of his theological system and further developed the doctrine of divine accommodation into a theology of ministry. As God accommodated divine revelation to the frailties of human beings, ministers of the gospel must accommodate the gospel to their hearers in order to gain a hearing for the gospel without losing the goal of true Christianity. This book contains insights for pastors, missionaries, and Christian thinkers on true Christianity from Fletcher, who devoted himself, according to Wesley, to being "an altogether Christian."
