  • Pages : 313 pages

Download or read book Hogarth written by David Bindman and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 2022-06-30 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hogarth was one of the great 18th-century painters, a marvellous colourist and innovator at all levels of artistic expression. Art historian David Bindman surveys the works of this artist whose wry humour and sharp wit were reflected in his prolific paintings and prints including The Rakes Progress and Marriage-A-la-Mode. Hogarth was also a master of pictorial satire, highlighting the moral and political hypocrisies of the day with delightful detail and comedy themes that resonate deeply with our times. The artist was a keen observer of class and society; this new edition has been specially updated to include a discussion of Hogarths many representations of Black people in 18th-century Britain, a subject that has long been overlooked. Now revised with additional material and illustrated in colour throughout, this is a vivid and incisive study of the man and his art.

Book excerpt: How William Hogarth and artists across Europe captured the new modernity of the 18th century, revealing themes still strikingly relevant today Illustrating the full range of Hogarth's most important paintings and prints, this book shows them in a new light, juxtaposed with work by major European contemporaries who influenced him or took their inspiration from him in their painting of modern life--including Watteau, Chardin, Troost, and Longhi. Hogarth is revealed not only as a key figure in British art history, but also as a major European artist. It is also a tale of four cities: London, Paris, Venice, and Amsterdam, represented in maps from the period. The themes of city life, social protest, sexuality, and satire, which come to the fore in the art of Hogarth and his contemporaries, are very much alive today.

Download or read book Hogarth written by C. Lewis Hind and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-05-18 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Hogarth" by C. Lewis Hind is a biography. Hogarth was an English painter, printmaker, pictorial satirist, social critic, and editorial cartoonist. His work ranges from realistic portraiture to comic strip-like series of pictures called "modern moral subjects", and he is perhaps best known for his series A Harlot's Progress, A Rake's Progress, and Marriage A-la-Mode. Knowledge of his work is so pervasive that satirical political illustrations in this style are often referred to as "Hogarthian".

Book excerpt: The legacy of graphic artist William Hogarth (1697-1764) remains so emphatic that even his last name has evolved into a common vernacular term referring to his characteristically scathing form of satire. Featuring rarely seen images and written contributions from leading scholars, this book showcases a collection of the artist's works gathered from the Lewis Walpole Library at Yale University and other repositories. It attests to the idiosyncratic nature of his style and its international influence, which continues to incite aesthetic and moral debate among critics. The eight essays by eminent Hogarth experts help to further contextualize the artist's unique narrative strategies, embedding the work within German philosophical debates and the moral confusion of the Victorian period and emphasizing the social and political dimensions that are part and parcel of its profound impact. Endlessly parodied and emulated, Hogarth's distinctive satire persists in its influence throughout the centuries and this publication provides the necessary lens through which to view it. Distributed for the Lewis Walpole Library

Book The Genuine Works of William Hogarth

Download or read book The Genuine Works of William Hogarth written by John Nichols and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-05-22 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This illustrated three-volume catalogue of the works of painter and engraver William Hogarth (1697-1764) was the result of 'Hogarthomania', the enthusiasm for all his productions which arose soon after his death. The publisher and author John Nichols (1745-1826), assisted by the collector and literary critic George Steevens, published a life of Hogarth and a list of his works in 1781, and as disputes increasingly arose over the genuineness of some of the prints attributed to him, enlarged versions appeared in 1782 and 1785. This work, published between 1808 and 1817, is the last in the sequence of Nichols' works on Hogarth, and remains a useful source for art historians and anyone interested in the cultural life of the eighteenth century. Volume 2 contains a catalogue of his works, an appendix of anecdotes about some of Hogarth's subjects, and his essay The Analysis of Beauty.
