Seymour (1870–1922) preached Pentecostal revival at the Azusa Street mission in Los Angeles. From these and other humble origins the movement has blossomed to 631 million people around the world. Gastón Espinosa provides new insight into the life and ministry of Seymour, the Azusa Street revival, and Seymour's influence on global Pentecostal origins. After defining key terms and concepts, he surveys the changing interpretations of Seymour over the past 100 years, critically engages them in a biography, and then provides an unparalleled collection of primary sources, all in a single volume. He pays particular attention to race relations, Seymour's paradigmatic global influence from 1906 to 1912, and the break between Seymour and Charles Parham, another founder of Pentecostalism. This boook proposes a further revision of Pentecostal eschatology created to recover prophetic elements of early Pentecostalism that invite a responsible social engagement in the world, and to overcome fundamentalist assumptions which have crept into Pentecostal theology in its middle years. To this end, the eschatological thought of selected Pentecostal theologians is placed in dialogue with Jurgen Moltmann. This dialogue critiques fundamentalist tendencies within contemporary Pentecostalism by advocating a theology more open to history and creation, and a Pentecostal ethic both personal and social in scope.

Revival swept from Asbury University, Australia, through America, and across the European continent; all within the space of one century. Why This Book? I wrote The Twentieth Revivals of the Century because there are so many stories that need to be told. Stories of sweeping revivals, which happened all across the globe. Spiritual awakenings that occurred in countries making headlines today--sometimes for all the wrong reasons. Nations like North Korea's Pyongyang and Japan, which incidentally almost became a Christian nation, leading up to the twentieth century. At this time, Christianity began gaining ground at a rapid pace. Such was the impact of the revivals covered in this book heading into the twentieth century. So, can we see a repeat of such revival fervour in the twenty-first Century? Was the recent Asbury Revival comparable with the one seen there in the 1970s? Does it measure up to the same basic criteria or pass the 'smell test' of how recent revivals have come about? These question, although not directly answered will show the the so-called Asbury revival was missing two basic ingredients, the preaching of the gospel and conversion of the masses.

Particularly important for Pentecostal mission was T. B. Barratt. He became Pentecostal after conflict with the Methodist (U.S.A.) Mission Board over mission theory and practice. His congregation in Kristiania became an international model. Other mission leaders included Andersen-Nordquelle, and Seehuus (Norway), Björk, Ongman. and Pethrus (Sweden), and Plum (Denmark). Each was already an established religious leader and editor of a periodical. Growth of Pentecostal mission and demands of Colonial governments caused institutionalization of mission administration (1915--1929). Trajectories in Norway and Sweden were toward professional "Boards," away from the earlier entrepreneurial, self-governing, self-theologizing, self-supporting and self--propagating mission models. Following Barratt's disillusionment with institutionalized U.S.A.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British Pentecostalism is linked to the Azusa Street Revival in Los Angeles through T. B. Barratt and Anglican vicar Alexander A. Boddy at Sunderland. Boddy’s experience and subsequent ministry set the foundation in Britain for the rise of the Apostolic Church, the Elim Church and the Assemblies of God. Each of these Pentecostal denominations had their roots in Wales. Following the Welsh Revival of 1904–05 some (enthused by their experience) sought a deeper relationship with God; and this search ultimately led them to Pentecostalism. A group of eager believers emerged around the town of Crosskeys in South East Wales. By 1912 they had established the Crosskeys Full Gospel Mission, which soon became a centre for Pentecostal activity. The central role of the Crosskeys group is seen in the development of the Assemblies of God in Wales and Monmouthshire denomination which was in existence by 1921. The Crosskeys based group had been in correspondence with the American Assemblies of God (AG) regarding joining that denomination as an official presbytery. It was this action that caused a group of like-minded English Pentecostals to pursue the establishment of the Assemblies of God in Great Britain and Ireland in 1924. This British denomination incorporated some thirty-eight Welsh Pentecostal assemblies. This book considers some of the important theological, political and social influences which shaped the brand of Pentecostalism that emerged in South East Wales in the early twentieth century—a movement which was to have a wide ranging influence on subsequent Pentecostal history far beyond the borders of Wales.
