Book The Boy From Worcester

Download or read book The Boy From Worcester written by Robert C. Pitchman and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-12-30 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worcester is the second largest city in the state of Massachusetts and was an industrial mill town—which made it the home to numerous mills, factories, three-deckers, and immigrants from different countries. Located in the central part of the state, this city thrives in harmony with its people where some of them are famous athletes, poets, actors, politicians and inventors. In this city, author Robert Pitchman was born and in his book, The Boy From Worcester, he honestly and unflinchingly relates his journey through life and survival. In this book, Pitchman reveals the story of his life with no holds barred. He is Worcester-born who, due to circumstances beyond his control and being an only child, was forced to survive on his own. At the age of six years old, his parents got divorced, which eventually led him to live in an orphanage just outside Worcester. When he was 15 years old, he went back to live with his mother and to survive by his own wits. In this city, he witnessed the various phases of development through the mills, factories, different enterprises, and cultural diversity—including the segregation that was apparent during that time. He had seen the city’s historical evolution, the success and fame of many individuals in various fields, and the invention of many useful things that are relevant to the world. This book is not an ordinary recounting of the author’s life of struggles growing up, it also highlights the people and culture of Worcester’s people, their unique norms and practices, the social interaction, and the numerous occurrences that help Pitchman shape his life. This was the city where he grew up, and became a man. Worcester is the city he loved, and, this is his story.

Download or read book Armenians of Worcester written by Pamela Apkarian-Russell and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the beginning of the twentieth century, millions of immigrants came to the United States in search of a better life and greater opportunities for their families. However, the Armenians who came to Worcester between 1894 and 1930 were escaping a devastating genocide that tore their country apart. What they found and how they became an integral part of Worcester culture and history is the story found in Armenians of Worcester. Worcester was a mecca for many Armenians, who had escaped with little more than their lives. There were mills that provided work, and there was a growing number of Armenians who were struggling to make sense of what had happened in their homeland. The first Armenian Apostolic church and the first Armenian Protestant church in America were both in this city, and both helped to build new foundations for a community that was to enrich the city and slowly resurrect the art, theater, music, and food that celebrates the Armenian culture. The Armenian picnics that were an integrating influence in the early years continue even today as a gathering of clans and all who join in on these days of celebration.

Book A History of Worcester 1674 1848

Download or read book A History of Worcester 1674 1848 written by Kenneth J. Moynihan and published by History Press (SC). This book was released on 2007 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author Kenneth J. Moynihan chronicles the fascinating early history of this bustling junction town and offers readers a front-row view of Worcester's dramatic, nearly forgotten past. The Nipmuc Indians destroyed the first settlement at Worcester in 1675. A second attempt was made in the 1680s, but a permanent settlement did not take root until 1713. Worcester's first citizens battled French and Indian enemies and endured a succession of political, ethnic and religious rivalries. How did the Nipmuc deal with the English threat? How did settlers cope with changes in economic and political life after the Revolution? For the first time in 170 years, a historian takes a fresh look at the history of early Worcester.

Book The Worcester Lunch Car Company

Download or read book The Worcester Lunch Car Company written by Richard J. S. Gutman and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Worcester Lunch Car Company monopolized the New England market with its colorful diners. Although Worcester sent a smattering of diners as far as Florida and Michigan, the cars were most popular in their home territory. From 1906 to 1961, the company built six hundred fifty-one diners, with as few as ten or as many as seventy seats. Known for their small size, solid construction, and old-fashioned styling, the cars featured oak and mahogany woodwork, intricate ceramic tile patterns, and a backbar of stainless steel. Their distinctive porcelain enamel exteriors with names emblazoned on them proudly proclaimed their presence along the roadside. Day and night, these diners fed generations of New England's working class; today, fewer than one hundred lunch cars still operate.
