Book excerpt: The women of Corsica are as remarkable and extraordinary as everything else about this unique Mediterranean island. Through centuries of fierce struggle it has bred women who are tough, brave, resourceful and redoubtable, passing on a culture that has often been materially poor but spiritually rich. Here they are, wives and warriors, saints, spies and seductresses, poets, painters, patriots and bandits. Anyone who visits the island and is interested in learning more about its women will find this a useful little handbook.
Download or read book The Corsican Woman written by Madge Swindells and published by Little Brown GBR. This book was released on 2000-12 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sybilia turned as if sleepwalking and, trance-like, walked down the stone steps to the living room. She shuddered as she took the rifle from the peg on the wall, but after only a moment's hesitation, she loaded it and went outside. Sybilia Rocca is beautiful, gentle and intelligent. But she is also Corsican and in her blood runs the intense passions of her race - the passions that drive her to shoot her father-in-law before stunned witnesses in the small square of the windswept town set high on a Corsican hillside. What is the terrible secret - the dark act of treachery twenty years before - that compels Sybilia to carry out her vendetta? Virtually everyone in the village knows, yet the unwritten law of their culture keeps them silenced. And now Sybilia is fighting for her life, gripped by a passion strong enough to destroy it...

Book excerpt: It will therefore, I think be admitted that the present volumes, in which I have endeavoured to give a full and unprejudiced history of the Women Bonapartes, call for no apology; and I may even venture to believe that, whatever their shortcomings, they will be welcomed by the English and American public as an attempt to fill a place in our Napoleonic literature which has been long vacant.

Download or read book Ideologies in Action written by Alexandra Jaffe and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-07-31 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Corsica, spelling contests, road signs, bilingual education bills and Corsican language newscasts leave language planners and ordinary speakers deeply divided over how to define what "counts" as Corsican and how it is connected with cultural identity. In Ideologies in Action Alexandra Jaffe explores the complex interrelationship between linguistic ideologies and practices on the French island of Corsica. This detailed exploration of the ideological and political underpinnings of three decades of language planning raises fundamental questions about what it means to "save" a minority language, and the way in which specific cultural, political and ideological contexts shape the "successes" and "failures" of linguistic engineering efforts. Jaffe's ethnography focuses both on the way dominant language ideologies are inscribed in the everyday experience of ordinary people, as well as how they shape the evolving strategies of language planners trying to revitalize the Corsican language. While Jaffe's analysis demonstrates the pervasive influence of dominant language ideologies on minority language speakers and language planners, she also draws on case studies from everyday discourse, educational practice and public and mediatized debates over language issues to develop an ethnographically-grounded perspective on levels of resistance. In the final part of the book she explores the emergence (and the limits) of "radical" genres of resistance found in forms of Corsican language activism and in examples of codeswitching and language mixing in bilingual radio practice. This book contributes to a growing literature on language ideology, and will be of interest to anthropologists, political scientists and linguists interested in the practical and theoretical dimensions of language contact, minority language literacy, bilingual education, and language shift.
