The title given to this book, "Woman's Suffrage by Constitutional Amendment," is not the same under which the lectures were originally given. Their title was "Local Self-Government." Book History of Woman Suffrage Vol 3 of 3

Download or read book History of Woman Suffrage Vol 3 of 3 written by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 1124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Woman Suffrage, Vol. 3 of 3: 1876-1885 For the completion of this work we are indebted to Eliza Jackson Eddy, the worthy daughter of that noblephilanthropist, Francis Jackson. He and Charles F. Hovey are the only men who have ever left a generous bequest to the woman suffrage movement. To Mrs. Eddy, who bequeathed to our cause two-thirds of her large fortune, belong all honor and praise as the first woman who has given alike her sympathy and her wealth to this momentous and far-reaching reform. This heralds a turn in the tide of benevolence, when, instead of building churches and monu ments to great men, and endowing colleges for boys, women will make the education and enfranchisement of their own sex the chief object of their lives. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woman Suffrage: A Reply Smith demurs, and contends that the lot of the woman has not been determined by the will of the man, at least in any considerable degree. According to him it had its origin in those circumstances which made it expedient, on public grounds, that in the early stages of civilization the family should be socially, legally, and politically a unit. Into this portion of the controversy, however, I cannot see that there would be any advantage in entering. Whether Mr. Mill was right or wrong in his view of the historical question, he was at all events eminently successful in the purpose for which he introduced the discussion. He has secured a hearing for the cause of woman, so effectually, that we may now at least feel confident that it will not be ultimately decided on other grounds than those of reason and justice. Nor does it in truth matter whether in approaching the question of Woman Suffrage we adopt Mr. Mill's or Mr. Smith's theory. Both alike regard the existing disabilities of women as survivals - Mr. Mill, as survivals from a very early period in which physical force was supreme; Mr. Smith as survivals from the state of things which produced the peculiar constitution of the patriarchal family but both as survivals, and therefore as belonging to a condition of life which has passed away. The point is thus of purely archaeological interest, while the real question now. Before the public is, not as to the origin of woman's disabilities, but as to their present expediency; the interest of the whole community, to borrow once more Mr. Smith's language, being the test. Book Selected Articles on Woman Suffrage Classic Reprint

Download or read book Selected Articles on Woman Suffrage Classic Reprint written by Edith M. Phelps and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Articles on Woman Suffrage Although Woman Suffrage has been discussed for many years, interest in the subject has by no means diminished. It is in response to a very lively demand for material and especially for a Debaters' Handbook on the subject that the present volume has been compiled. This book is similar to the other volumes of the series, and contains a bibliography and reprints of the best available material both in favor of and opposed to the extension of the suffrage. For the sake of convenience, the reprints have been grouped under three main headings: General Discussion, Affirmative, and Negative Discussion. Owing to the vast amount of literature on this subject, a complete bibliography would be an impossibility and has not been attempted. It is believed, however, that this bibliography will be found adequate for the needs of the average reader or debater. While a much larger number of references were examined than appear here, only those have been selected that would be valuable and at the same time easily accessible to the average library or individual.
