Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Woman's Auxiliary to the National Council: Seventy-Second Annual Report and Handbook of Information; St. Martin's Church, Charlotte, N. C., April 27-28, 1954 The story of the program of the Woman's Auxiliary of the Protestant Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina is thrilling. It is told in the pages of this book. To those who know the full extent of the sacrifice, devotion, and effort that go into the program, the full meaning of the reports is highly encouraging. It might be bad policy to compare the program of the Woman's Auxiliary with the program of any other element of our diocesan life, but it stands out clearly that the program of the Woman's Auxiliary penetrates more courageously into the total program of the Church than any other officially organized group. Perhaps they have more time. Surely they have a greater experience, being an older organization. At any rate we give thanks to God for His bounty through the Woman's Auxiliary, for His Spirit and His Hand are both at work here. • Author : Constance Backhouse

Download or read book Colour Coded written by Constance Backhouse and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1999-11-20 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically Canadians have considered themselves to be more or less free of racial prejudice. Although this conception has been challenged in recent years, it has not been completely dispelled. In Colour-Coded, Constance Backhouse illustrates the tenacious hold that white supremacy had on our legal system in the first half of this century, and underscores the damaging legacy of inequality that continues today. Backhouse presents detailed narratives of six court cases, each giving evidence of blatant racism created and enforced through law. The cases focus on Aboriginal, Inuit, Chinese-Canadian, and African-Canadian individuals, taking us from the criminal prosecution of traditional Aboriginal dance to the trial of members of the 'Ku Klux Klan of Kanada.' From thousands of possibilities, Backhouse has selected studies that constitute central moments in the legal history of race in Canada. Her selection also considers a wide range of legal forums, including administrative rulings by municipal councils, criminal trials before police magistrates, and criminal and civil cases heard by the highest courts in the provinces and by the Supreme Court of Canada. The extensive and detailed documentation presented here leaves no doubt that the Canadian legal system played a dominant role in creating and preserving racial discrimination. A central message of this book is that racism is deeply embedded in Canadian history despite Canada's reputation as a raceless society. Book Pioneering Women in American Mathematics

Download or read book Pioneering Women in American Mathematics written by Judy Green and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2009 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is the result of a study in which the authors identified all of the American women who earned PhD's in mathematics before 1940, and collected extensive biographical and bibliographical information about each of them. By reconstructing as complete a picture as possible of this group of women, Green and LaDuke reveal insights into the larger scientific and cultural communities in which they lived and worked." "The book contains an extended introductory essay, as well as biographical entries for each of the 228 women in the study. The authors examine family backgrounds, education, careers, and other professional activities. They show that there were many more women earning PhD's in mathematics before 1940 than is commonly thought." "The material will be of interest to researchers, teachers, and students in mathematics, history of mathematics, history of science, women's studies, and sociology."--BOOK JACKET.
