Book The Devil of Clan Sinclair

Download or read book The Devil of Clan Sinclair written by Karen Ranney and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2013-07-30 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: True love blossoms between a widow and an inventor in the Scottish Highlands in the steamy historical romance by a New York Times–bestselling author. For Virginia Traylor, Countess of Barrett, marriage was merely the vehicle to buy her father a title. Widowhood, however, brings a host of problems. For her husband deliberately spent the money intended for Virginia and her in-laws, leaving them penniless—unless she produces an heir. Desperate and confused, Virginia embarks on a fateful journey that brings her to the doorstep of the only man she’s ever loved . . . He’s known as the Devil, but Macrath Sinclair doesn’t care. He moved to a tiny Scottish village in hopes of continuing his work as an inventor and starting a family of his own. He bought the house; he chose the woman. Unfortunately, Virginia didn’t choose him. Macrath knows he should turn her away now, but she needs him, and he wants her more than ever. Whatever game Virginia’s playing, Macrath intends to win—one wickedly seductive deed at a time . . . Praise for The Devil of Clan Sinclair “In this first in her new Clan Sinclair series, Karen Ranney enchants the reader with strong descriptions of people, places, and artifacts. Her characters are finely drawn. . . . Her descriptions of the Scottish Highlands . . . are clear and evocative. An energetic story with many surprising twists and turns.” —Historical Novel Society

Download or read book Voices of Iona written by Joshua S. Fullman and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-11-11 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the sixth century, St. Columba founded a retreat off the west coast of Scotland on the island of Iona. Here monastics and pilgrims could find healing and meet with God. For generations to come, Iona served as a focal point throughout the British Isles as a community of work, prayer, and solitude--a meeting place between heaven and earth. Saints and sinners were restored in this island sanctuary, inspiring great works of faith and great works of art. The poems in this volume depict vignettes of pilgrims at various stages on their journey toward Iona. The author, an American expatriate, composed these poems both as a reflection of his own experiences in the British Isles and as votive offerings to prompt interior spiritual pilgrimage within the readers. It is through poetry, Fullman believes, that we, too, can rediscover ourselves and meet with God. For those who have ever left home, or felt estranged in their own home, these poems speak to the heart of displacement and dislocation--and of finding belonging in an unfamiliar land.

Book excerpt: This book provides us with an accurate historical view of the Sinclair family alongside Scottish history It explores the journey of the Sinclairs from their Normandy routes to Scotland. Sinclair is one of the oldest surnames in Europe and its ancestry goes back to William the Conqueror. The Sinclairs were well respected and throughout the centuries, won or were awarded property and lands. This book goes on to describe in detail, all the battles looking at the first Battle of Dunbar in 1296 effectively ending in an English victory to the first battle for Independence, the Battle of Roslin. It goes on encountering the Sinclairs in the likes of the Battles of Bannochburn and Culloden to the ill fated Invasion of England in 1648 with King Charles II. It then takes us on, ending the journey at the Union of Parliaments of Scotland and England in 1707.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 1 of this history ended with the chief and his followers dead on Flodden field. Volume 2 describes the Clan's recovery. Within five years Colin, 3rd Earl, was Vice-Regent and Lieutenant of the kingdom. Within five decades the Clan had extended their possessions to the Western Isles, reinforced their Highland dominance, and become the most powerful family in the nation. How they managed to remain so for a century and a half, despite everything history could throw at them, is the subject of Alastair Campbell's fascinating, vivid and well-paced narrative.Religious conflict in Scotland during almost the whole of the period was devastating. The Crown vacillated between Reformed, Episcopal, and Catholic doctrine whether it was based in Edinburgh or, after 1603, in London. With one exception by contrast the Campbell chiefs held firm to the Protestant Reformation. In 1556 Colin, 4th Earl, invited John Knox to preach at Inveraray; 90 years later Archibald, 8th Earl and first Marquess of Argyll, led the Army of the Solemn League and Covenant. Late in the sixteenth century, however, a crack appeared in the remarkable unity of the Clan: a nationwide conspiracy involving the Campbells of Glenorchy, Lochnell, and Ardkinglas, led to the death of the Bonnie Earl of Moray, the murder of Campbell of Cawdor, and two attempts on the life of 'Grim-faced Archie' the 7th Earl who subsequently turned Roman Catholic and in 1617 left to serve the King of Spain. Again, however, the Clan recovered. One of the conspirators, Black Duncan Campbell of Glenorchy, scourge of the MacGregors, even received a royal pardon and a Baronetcy. Alastair Campbell describes the onset of the religious and civil wars in the seventeenth century. The greatest figure in Scotland then was the first Marquess of Argyll, an ardent Protestant, who was pitted against the charismatic cavalier, the Marquess of Montrose. On behalf of church and crown in Scotland each led governments and armies against one a
