Book Spanish Mysticism

Download or read book Spanish Mysticism written by Cristobal Serran-Pagan y Fuentes and published by Mdpi AG. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the Guest Editor for the special volume on "Spanish Mysticism", my experience working with experts in this field has been excellent and very rewarding, especially in these current times, where we are dealing with COVID-19. I am very grateful to have served as the Guest Editor and to have contributed with an article on St. John of the Cross. It has been a great privilege to exchange ideas with scholars from all over the world. Until just recently, scholars in theology or religious studies often only associated Spanish mysticism with the great Christian mystics from St. Ignatius of Loyolato St. Teresa of Avila to St. John of the Cross. In the pluralistic and global world in which we live today, we must try our best to expand our knowledge and make the connections that existed in medieval and modern times among the three major mystical traditions in the West. The long history of conflicts, tensions, wars and, yes, religious coexistence is an integral part in the study of Spanish mysticism that has to be reckoned with. Spanish mysticism has become a field of study in itself due to the rich history of kabbalistic, Christian, and Sufi mystics born in the Iberian Peninsula-from Mosesde Leon to Abraham Abulafia, Ignatius of Loyola to Teresa of Avila and John of the Cross, and Ibn 'Abbad of Ronda to Ibn al-'Arabi. The three monotheistic religions in the West left us a major cultural, spiritual, and religious legacy in the so-called period of convivencia or coexistence in medieval and modern Spain. In total, nine articles were published electronically in this special volume of Religions. The authors were scholars from the United States (Dombrowski, Serrán-Pagán, Carrión), Spain (López-Anguita, Alonso, Beneito), Puerto Rico (López-Baralt), Israel (Bar-Asher), and Germany (Dal Bo). I am very proud of the quality of their research and their major contributions to this volume. I believe this field of Spanish mysticism will open up even more avenues and opportunities after people read these articles covering Jewish, Christian, and Islamic mysticism in the context of the Iberian Peninsula. The primary scope of the articles collected here in this special volume serves the purpose of contextualizing Spanish mystical writings in their historical times and to examine how their legacy in the Iberian soil continues to evolve over time. The purpose of this volume is to bring together the different fields of knowledge from religious studies, theology, philosophy, history, comparative literature, philology, psychology, sociology, and the arts to address the main question: Do Spanish mystics borrow symbols and narratives from the mystical traditions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam? This special topic on Spanish mysticism has attracted scholars from different disciplines to study the great Spanish mystics. The overall focus of this issue is to trace the mutual influences found in Jewish, Christian, and Muslim mystics and to examine their spiritual legacies in greater depth. The aim of this volume is to expand on the existing, currently available literature and to bring together the disjoint pieces of the puzzle so we can better and more holistically understand the rich legacy of the Spanish mystics and the extent to which their mystical thoughts are intertwined in the long history of Spanish mystical literature. To those of you interested in Jewish mysticism in the context of past interactions with either Muslims or Christians, I cordially invite you to read.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spanish Mystics: A Sequel to 'Many Voices' Mysticism has been termed 'the natural produce of the soil of Spain.' It breathes not only in her theology, but in her literature and in her fine arts. Sharp contrasts of climate, tastes, and habits are to be found in the different provinces of the Iberian Peninsula, but to the student of Spanish history one prevailing element pervades the whole and seems to unite the opposing forces. It is this religious sentiment which is everywhere predominant, and which has ever formed an integral part of the national character. In the early annals of Spain the nation was not exempt from the taint of Arianism; but when, in the sixth century, under her Gothic king, Recared, she renounced its errors and accepted the orthodox faith preached by Leander and Isidore, every power was thenceforth devoted to the maintenance of that Catholic faith with which her greatness became indissolubly united. The wars which she waged were in defence of orthodoxy. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Spanish Mystics Ecstasy and Communion with Peter Tyler

Download or read book The Spanish Mystics Ecstasy and Communion with Peter Tyler written by Peter Tyler and published by Wise Studies. This book was released on 2020-03-28 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In these four talks, Peter Tyler explores the factors that contributed to the rise of mystical writing in 16th Century Spain. He traces the particular history of the Peninsula that shaped the milieu within which mysticism flourished at this time. One of the most popular and approachable Christian saints of all time, St Teresa of Avila (1515 – 1582) is justly celebrated as one of the key writers in the Christian mystical tradition. Yet her popularity belies the struggles she had to overcome in her own lifetime, to have her mystical approaches accepted by the wider church. Peter looks at how her life and struggles influenced her mystical teaching, especially as found in The Book of the Life and The Interior Castle. Peter explores the author of the ‘Dark Night of the Soul’, St John of the Cross’s (1542 – 1591). His teachings on the spiritual life are remarkably light and beautiful. Peter places John’s life and teaching within the context of 16thCentury Spain and explores questions such as: ‘How can God be known in this life?’ and ‘How far does knowledge of God lead to annihilation of the individual personality?’

Book A Year With the Mystics

Download or read book A Year With the Mystics written by Kathryn Jean Lopez and published by . This book was released on 2019-09-17 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There's so much noise. Everything can seem like a distraction. Distraction, in fact, seems our oxygen. When was the last time you saw people talking on an elevator? We seem to plug in everywhere. We have earphones and screens and don't evenlook up, never mind find time for silence. Our hearts need quiet. How are we ever going to pray otherwise? How could we ever possibly know God's love and will, and the truth about ourselves and the world without resting in Him? Resting in Him. What does that even mean? In A Year with the Mystics, popular National Review journalist and commentator Kathryn Jean Lopez, who writes and speaks frequently about faith and public life, and prayer and the Church, offers readers a tour of the magnificent variety of mystical writing in the heart of the Church. Featuring reflections from both household and contemporary names like Saint John Paul II, Mother Teresa and Edith Stein, as well as titanic historic figures such as St. Catherine of Siena and John of the Cross. The words of these holy men and women of prayer are presented in accessible doses ideal for daily prayer amidst the seemingly all-consuming busy-ness of life. Each page is an invitation to enter more deeply into the life of faith. What does the road to union with God look like? What is a dark night? What is true love of the Trinity? What is this Church as bridegroom business? Mysticism is not some foreign and remote life of prayer for poets and saints in heaven; rather, it is the call for every Christian to draw more deeply and profoundly from the heart of Christ in prayer. A Year with the Mystics is a tour, a retreat, and a love story in which God seeks you out. With the small commitment of a few minutes a day to prayer with mystic saints and other holy ones, you will be making time for communication and peace in the heart of the Trinity. Your faith will grow and you will see that the life of a contemplative in the world can be yours; it can become for you the air you breathe and a wellspring of renewal in your life as a Catholic, rooted in the sacraments.
