Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transatlantic Feminisms is an interdisciplinary collection of original feminist research on women’s lives in Africa and the African diaspora. Demonstrating the power and value of transcontinental connections and exchanges between feminist thinkers, this unique collection of fifteen essays addresses the need for global perspectives on gender, ethnicity, race and class. Examining diverse topics and questions in contemporary feminist research, the authors describe and analyze women’s lives in a host of vibrant, compelling locations. There are essays exploring women’s political activism in Kenya, Uganda, Ghana, Santo Domingo, Jamaica and Tanzania. Other essays explore representation and creativity in Brazil, Nigeria, and Miami. While one essay examines African women as conflicted immigrants in France, another recounts the experiences of Haitian women trying to survive in the Dominican Republic. Core themes of the book include the evolution of black feminism; black feminist political leadership; the politics of identity and representation; and struggles for agency and survival. These themes are interwoven throughout the volume and illuminate different geographic and cultural experiences, yet very similar oppressive forces and forms of resistance.

Book A Rage to Live A Biography of Richard and Isabel Burton

Download or read book A Rage to Live A Biography of Richard and Isabel Burton written by Mary S. Lovell and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2000-07-17 with total page 948 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An "extraordinary biography" (New York Times Book Review) of a brilliant pair of adventurers. Their marriage was both improbable and inevitable. Isabel Arundell was a schoolgirl, the scion of England's most distinguished Catholic family. When she first saw him while walking at a seaside resort, Richard Burton had already made his mark as a linguist (he was fluent in twenty-nine languages), scholar, soldier, and explorer--at once a symbol of Victorian England's vision of empire and an avowed rebel against its mores. When she turned and saw him staring after her, she decided that she would marry him. By their next meeting, Burton had become the first infidel to infiltrate Mecca as one of the faithful, and, in an expedition to discover the source of the Nile, would soon be the first white man to see Lake Tanganyika. After being married, the Burtons traveled and experienced the world, from diplomatic postings in Brazil and Africa to hair-raising adventures in the Syrian desert. In later life Richard courted further controversy as a self-proclaimed erotologist and the translator of The Kama Sutra. Based on previously unavailable archives, Mary Lovell has written a compelling joint biography that sets Isabel in her proper place as Burton's equal in daring and endurance, a fascinating figure in her own right.

Book The Ruins of Palmyra

Download or read book The Ruins of Palmyra written by Robert Wood and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Wood's Palmyra and Balbec were first printed in 1753 and 1757, respectively, in simultaneous English and French editions. (For the circumstances of publication, see the Introduction below.) Both were republished in a single volume in 1827 (London: William Pickering); and reprinted in separate volumes in 1971 (Westmead: Gregg International). No manuscript of the texts is known to survive, but Borra's drawings for the plates are preserved in the collection of the Royal Institute of British Architects (see, e.g., Figure 7 in the Introduction below). The present text is based on the original English editions of 1753 and 1757. Orthography and capitalization have been modernised, punctuation has not. Toponyms and names of historical figures have been modified to reflect current English usage. Wood's references to other authors, ancient and modern, are highly abbreviated, and are here reprinted as found. However, passages directly quoted from ancient authors have been updated by reference to more recent editions: the Loebs for Diodorus Siculus, the Historia Augusta, Pliny, and Strabo; Dindorf (1832) for the Chronicon Paschale; Mommsen (1868) for the Digest; Rougé (1966) for the Expositio totius mundi et gentium; Lightfoot (2003) for Lucian's On the Syrian Goddess; Willis (1994) for Macrobius; and Thurn (2000) for Malalas. Citations, by book and chapter when appropriate, have been supplied {in braces}. Internal cross-references have been updated to reflect the pagination of the present volumes. References in the Introduction give the pagination, first of the original editions, then of the present volumes."--
