Book Wildwoods Houses Through Time

Download or read book Wildwoods Houses Through Time written by Taylor Henry and published by America Through Time. This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wildwoods are four boroughs on a South Jersey barrier island first settled in the late 1800s. Once known as Five Mile Beach, the wind-whipped forest and beaches transformed from fishing town to summer resort. Developers divided the ground into lots, hired architects to draw houses, and construction companies to build them. This all happened during an architectural transition period at the turn of the century, resulting in a diverse range of styles, from Victorian to Craftsman and Gothic to Colonial, many of which were as grand as those in Cape May. Although Wildwood's Victorian architecture was called noteworthy by architects, many homes were not appreciated or protected. Instead of being restored or renovated, they became run-down and were knocked down. But luckily, not all was lost. There are homeowners and developers who see potential in the Wildwoods' history and character. They accept the challenges of preservation, knowing the benefits it brings the community. These people are saving what makes the Wildwoods worth living in.

Book excerpt: With a rich history of great beaches, a two-mile-long boardwalk, and thrilling amusement piers, Wildwood, New Jersey, has been a popular summer seashore resort for vacationers for nearly a century. Fun Pier was created in 1957 by Joe Barnes on the former site of Wildwood's original Convention Hall. Barnes transformed the pier, once dominated by kiddie rides, by building custom rides that were unique to the Wildwood boardwalk, such as the Sky Tower, the Monorail, and the Ski Ride. Fun Pier became famous for its unconventional, carnival-like atmosphere. After two fires sealed the pier's fate, it was acquired by the Morey organization, which transformed it into Wild Wheels and ultimately Adventure Pier.

Book excerpt: This 3-vol. work constitutes a vastly enlarged and expanded new edition of the Index to American Photographic Collections, 3rd enlarged edition, differing from the previous editions in two important respects. First is the inclusion of holdings from outside the United States, a natural evolution in our shrinking world. The second is the inclusion of exhibition histories, cross-referenced by photographer and sponsoring institution, providing a useful new context for evaluating less well-known photographers.

Book Red Clay White Water Blues

    Book Details:
  • Author : Virginia Estes Causey
  • Publisher : University of Georgia Press
  • Release : 2019
  • ISBN : 0820354996
  • Pages : 344 pages

Download or read book Red Clay White Water Blues written by Virginia Estes Causey and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2019 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Columbus is the third-largest city in Georgia, and Red Clay, White Water, and Blues is its first comprehensive history. Virginia E. Causey documents the city's founding in 1828 and brings its story to the present, examining the economic, political, social, and cultural changes over the period. It is the first history of the city that analyzes the significant contributions of all its citizens, including African Americans, women, and the working class. Causey, who has lived and worked in Columbus for more than forty years, focuses on three defining characteristics of the city's history: the role that geography has played in its evolution, specifically its location on the Chattahoochee River along the Fall Line, making it an ideal place to establish water-powered textile mills; the fact that the control of city's affairs rested in the hands of a particular business elite; and the endemic presence of violence that left a "bloody trail" throughout local history. Causey traces the life of Columbus: its founding and early boom years; the Civil War and its aftermath; conflicts as a modern city emerged in the first half of the twentieth century; racial tension and economic decline in the mid-to-late 1900s; and rebirth and revival of the city in the twenty-first century. Peppered throughout are compelling anecdotes about the city's most colorful characters, including Sol Smith and His Dramatic Company, music phenom Blind Tom Wiggins, suffragist Augusta Howard, industrialist and philanthropist G. Gunby Jordan, peanut purveyor Tom Huston, blueswoman Ma Rainey, novelist Carson McCullers, and insurance magnate John Amos.
