Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the PREFACE. Some few years ago, when reading a review of Knox's 'Autumns on the Spey, ' I came upon the following passage: -" There is no British mammal, or reputed British mammal, of whose character, locality, and even existence we are so totally ignorant as the Wild Cat." This surprised me, particularly as it was from the pen of a well-known writer on natural history; so, with the view of giving a somewhat more connected history of this animal than is usually found in books on natural history, more especially as it was the only example of the Feline family indigenous to Britain, and on the point of becoming extinct, I commenced collecting together all available information relating to this subject, both on the Continent and in this country. I did not expect to find any difficulty in being able to define the Wild Cat (Felis catus) as a distinct species. The task, however, was not so easy as I anticipated, for I found that the characteristics relied on by most authors as specific were not persistent, were at times absent, and were also often present in the Domestic Cat. Moreover, on a careful examination of a number of examples of the Wild Cat of the present time I found many indications of a mixture of the two races. It would seem as if the original Wild Cat, as it existed in the olden days, has been almost exterminated throughout Europe, and that its place has been taken by a mongrel race, the result of continual interbreeding during many centuries (2000 years) of the Wild and the imported Domestic Cat, whose original ancestor was probably the Caffer Cat (Felis caffra)....

Book excerpt: This is the definitive book on classical cats. The cat has played a significant role in history from the earliest times. Well known is its role in the religion and art of ancient Egypt, no less than its association with witchcraft in the Middle Ages. But when did the cat become a domestic companion and worker as well? There has been much debate about the position of the cat in ancient Greece and Rome. Artistic representations are sometimes ambiguous, and its role as a mouse-catcher seems often to have been carried out by weasels. Yet other evidence clearly suggests that the cat was as important to Greeks and Romans as it is to many modern people. This book is the first comprehensive survey of the evidence for cats in Greece and Rome, and of their functions and representations in art. Donald Engels draws on authors from Aesop to Aristotle; on vase-painting, inscriptions and the plastic arts; and on a thorough knowledge of zoology of the cat. He also sets the ancient evidence in the wider context of the Egyptian period that preceded it, as well as the views of the Church fathers who ushered antiquity into the Middle Ages.

Book Spatial Patterns of Co occurrence of the European Wildcat Felis Silvestris Silvestris and Domestic Cats Felis Silvestris Catus in the Bavarian Forest National Park

Download or read book Spatial Patterns of Co occurrence of the European Wildcat Felis Silvestris Silvestris and Domestic Cats Felis Silvestris Catus in the Bavarian Forest National Park written by Tanja Beutel and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: After persecution and a long period of extinction in parts of central Europe, the European wildcat is currently increasing its range, also to areas deemed unsuitable for this species. This range expansion facilitates close contact with domestic cats, which can reach high population densities even in protected areas. We provide unambiguous evidence that the European wildcat is present in the Bavarian Forest National Park. We assessed the frequency of domestic cat occurrence, and analyzed the distributions of the two felid subspecies with regard to residential areas, forested habitat, elevation and protected areas, and analyzed their spatial overlap. Camera traps installed in the national park detected six putative wildcats in 2008-2015 at elevations between 800 and 1100 m a.s.l. Genetic analysis of material obtained from hair traps with valerian-treated lure sticks confirmed the presence of three wildcat individuals in early 2015. The number of wildcat events detected increased slightly in recent years and wildcats were detected closer to shrub cover and the forest edge. Of the domestic cat events, 90% were within 1.1 km of residential areas, but some moved up to nearly 3 km into the national park. Ranges of wildcats and domestic cats broadly overlapped. All but one camera trap that recorded wildcats also recorded domestic cats, and some camera traps recorded domestic cats but no wildcats. Domestic cats were the fifth most often detected mammal species in the protected area. To avoid a negative impact of domestic cats on wildcats through hybridization, which might already occur, and considering the ecological impact of predation by domestic cats, we recommend a buffer zone of 1 km surrounding the national park, where domestic cats should not be allowed outdoors
