Book Congratulations On Everything

Download or read book Congratulations On Everything written by Nathan Whitlock and published by ECW Press. This book was released on 2016-05-01 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dark and comic novel, Congratulations On Everything tracks the struggles, frailties and cruelly pyrrhic victories of the middle-aged owner of a bar-restaurant and a 30ish lunch shift waitress. Jeremy has bought into the teachings of an empowerment and success guru, hook, line and sinker. A Toronto service industry lifer, he's risen through the ranks until he finally takes the keys to his destiny and opens his own place, The Ice Shack. Everyone assumes Ice Shack daytime waitress Charlene is innocent and empathetic, but in reality she's desperately unhappy and looking for a way out of her marriage to her high-school sweetheart. A drunken encounter between Charlene and her boss Jeremy sends them both careening. The Ice Shack stops being an oasis of sanity and, as Jeremy struggles to keep his business afloat, he'll stop at nothing to maintain his successful, good guy self-image. In an era when foodies rule and chefs become superstars, Congratulations On Everything is a hilarious and occasionally uncomfortable dose of anti-foodie reality that reveals what goes on when the customers and Instagrammers aren't around — and even sometimes when they are.

Download or read book Monte Carlo Methods written by Malvin H. Kalos and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-09-26 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This introduction to Monte Carlo Methods seeks to identify and study the unifying elements that underlie their effective application. It focuses on two basic themes. The first is the importance of random walks as they occur both in natural stochastic systems and in their relationship to integral and differential equations. The second theme is that of variance reduction in general and importance sampling in particular as a technique for efficient use of the methods. Random walks are introduced with an elementary example in which the modelling of radiation transport arises directly from a schematic probabilistic description of the interaction of radiation with matter. Building on that example, the relationship between random walks and integral equations is outlined. The applicability of these ideas to other problems is shown by a clear and elementary introduction to the solution of the Schrodinger equation by random walks. The detailed discussion of variance reduction includes Monte Carlo evaluation of finite-dimensional integrals. Special attention is given to importance sampling, partly because of its intrinsic interest in quadrature, partly because of its general usefulness in the solution of integral equations. One significant feature is that Monte Carlo Methods treats the "Metropolis algorithm" in the context of sampling methods, clearly distinguishing it from importance sampling. Physicists, chemists, statisticians, mathematicians, and computer scientists will find Monte Carlo Methods a complete and stimulating introduction.

Book Long Slow Distance

Download or read book Long Slow Distance written by Joe Henderson and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2012-04-18 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A revolutionary is where you find him," wrote running's leading writer, Dr. George Sheehan, as he reflected on the revolution-charged 1960s. "He could be the guy next door. Joe Henderson looks like a typical guy next door. Out of Iowa, he has the smile and style of the heartland of America. But he has fallen for that old Socratic saw that the unexamined life is not worth living. The first result was revolt, rebellion and a booklet called Long Slow Distance: The Humane Way to Train. The LSD method of running that Henderson espouses is not new. He has simply systematized it and, in effect, founded a new order, a new sect that has bid pain, suffering and sacrifice good-bye. Joe Henderson is a revolutionary not because his writings have produced a wave of faster runners, but because he has spawned happier ones." This slim volume, published in 1969, chronicles the revolution in approaches and attitudes that helped spark the running boom of 1970s. Long Slow Distance tells the stories of Henderson and five fellow revolutionaries (Amby Burfoot, Bob Deines, Tom Osler, Ed Winrow and Jeff Kroot) who all revolted against the speed training in vogue at the time. Independently they arrived at similar conclusions about their long-distance training, slowing and going longer. The Kindle edition includes a new introduction and updates on the six runners.

Book Barefoot Running

Download or read book Barefoot Running written by Michael Sandler and published by Crown. This book was released on 2011-09-20 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How could something we have for free—our bare feet—be better for running than $150 shoes? The truth is that running in shoes is high-impact, unstable, and inflexible. Shoes promote a heel-centric ground strike, which weakens your feet, knees, and hips, and leads to common running injuries. In contrast, barefoot running is low-impact, forefoot-centric, stable, and beneficial to your body. It encourages proper form and strengthens your feet in miraculous ways. When you run in shoes, you not only risk developing poor form, but you also hinder the natural relationship with the ground that running facilitates. Barefoot running restores the delightful sensory and spiritual connections to the earth that you were meant to experience. Barefoot Running offers the only step-by-step direction runners need at any age to overcome injuries, run faster than ever, and rediscover the pure joy of running. Once you tear off your shoes and learn to dance with nature, you’ll tread lightly and freely, hearing only the earth’s symphony and feeling only the dirt beneath your feet. Hit the ground running with revolutionary techniques for starting out slowly, choosing minimalist footwear, navigating rough weather and rugged terrain, and building your feet into living shoes.

Book A Historical Review and Analysis of Army Physical Readiness Training and Assessment

Download or read book A Historical Review and Analysis of Army Physical Readiness Training and Assessment written by Whitfield East and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-12 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Drillmaster of Valley Forge-Baron Von Steuben-correctly noted in his "Blue Book" how physical conditioning and health (which he found woefully missing when he joined Washington's camp) would always be directly linked to individual and unit discipline, courage in the fight, and victory on the battlefield. That remains true today. Even an amateur historian, choosing any study on the performance of units in combat, quickly discovers how the levels of conditioning and physical performance of Soldiers is directly proportional to success or failure in the field. In this monograph, Dr. Whitfield "Chip" East provides a pragmatic history of physical readiness training in our Army. He tells us we initially mirrored the professional Armies of Europe as they prepared their forces for war on the continent. Then he introduces us to some master trainers, and shows us how they initiated an American brand of physical conditioning when our forces were found lacking in the early wars of the last century. Finally, he shows us how we have and must incorporate science (even when there exists considerable debate!) to contribute to what we do-and how we do it-in shaping today's Army. Dr. East provides the history, the analysis, and the pragmatism, and all of it is geared to understanding how our Army has and must train Soldiers for the physical demands of combat. Our culture is becoming increasingly ''unfit," due to poor nutrition, a lack of adequate and formal exercise, and too much technology. Still, the Soldiers who come to our Army from our society will be asked to fight in increasingly complex and demanding conflicts, and they must be prepared through new, unique, and scientifically based techniques. So while Dr. East's monograph is a fascinating history, it is also a required call for all leaders to better understand the science and the art of physical preparation for the battlefield. It was and is important for us to get this area of training right, because getting it right means a better chance for success in combat.
