Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the inside story of the man who was known as the White Tornado in Rolls-Royce Bristol aero engines, for he outlines the work he and others carried out over twenty-one years during the early concept, development, and service stages of the Panavia Tornado engines. He went on to project manage Rolls-Royces first production single-crystal turbine blades and then worked on control systems for several years, describing these works as the story proceeds. A whistle-blower, he enjoyed Gilbert and Sullivan, hang gliding, and motorsport, and he eventually left RR to work with several charities, particularly Headway and Remap, where he describes his experience as an inventive carer of disabled people of all sorts. Many years were spent maintaining and renovating church turret Clocks, and some of this is reported here. As a humanist, he has experience of and interest in many things, and the book thus contains a variety of challenging thoughts, including the nature of biological evolution (extraterrestrials too), a proposal to reverse engineer formal methods software, a proposal for a suitable UK Constitution because nobody knows the hidden one, many other proposals for government, and thoughts about the European Union and nuclear weapons.

Download or read book Calls to God written by Susan K. Todd and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calls to God is a spiritual guide to understanding and detaching conscious, energetic cording. This is beyond the cording you are exposed to in everyday interactions. These are conscious, energetic infiltrations that deliberately cord to you and extract energy from you discreetly without your consent. How do they impact your life? When in conflict, the conscious energetic cording amplify your negative emotions to manipulate you to react rather than act. The cording takes all the energy they choose for personal gain and leaves you to deal with the consequences. They purposely try to keep you immersed in conflict to divert your attention away from your spiritual path. In regards to your physical and mental health, evolved conscious energetic cording are capable of causing health issues and attaching to symptoms of diseases and injuries. You end up treating the organic reason for the injury or symptom and ignoring the energetic component. Calls to God are decrees that are recited by you in collaboration with God’s energy to disengage conscious, energetic cording. They are said from the heart, calling for accountability, not vengeance, with unconditional love and forgiveness. With routine use, you will move through conflicts instead of becoming a part of them. You will clear the energetic component of disease and injury. Calls to God decrees will teach you how to regain your spiritual autonomy and not be encumbered with the influences of conscious energetic infiltrations that do not have your best interest at heart.

Download or read book Sound and Fury written by Dave Kindred and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2006-03-10 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Muhammad Ali and Howard Cosell were must-see TV long before that phrase became ubiquitous. Individually interesting, together they were mesmerizing. They were profoundly different -- young and old, black and white, a Muslim and a Jew, Ali barely literate and Cosell an editor of his university's law review. Yet they had in common forces that made them unforgettable: Both were, above all, performers who covered up their deep personal insecurities by demanding -- loudly and often -- public acclaim. Theirs was an extraordinary alliance that produced drama, comedy, controversy, and a mutual respect that helped shape both men's lives. Dave Kindred -- uniquely equipped to tell the Ali-Cosell story after a decades-long intimate working relationship with both men -- re-creates their unlikely connection in ways never before attempted. From their first meeting in 1962 through Ali's controversial conversion to Islam and refusal to be inducted into the U.S. Army (the right for him to do both was publicly defended by Cosell), Kindred explores both the heroics that created the men's upward trajectories and the demons that brought them to sadness in their later lives. Kindred draws on his experiences with Ali and Cosell, fresh reporting, and interviews with scores of key personalities -- including the families of both. In the process, Kindred breaks new ground in our understanding of these two unique men. The book presents Ali not as a mythological character but as a man in whole, and it shows Cosell not in caricature but in faithful scale. With vivid scenes, poignant dialogue, and new interpretations of historical events, this is a biography that is novelistically engrossing -- a richly evocative portrait of the friendship that shaped two giants and changed sports and television forever.
Download or read book Cold New World written by William Finnegan and published by Modern Library. This book was released on 2010-09-29 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of Barbarian Days, this narrative nonfiction classic documents the rising inequality and cultural alienation that presaged the crises of today. “A status report on the American Dream [that] gets its power [from] the unpredictable, rich specifics of people’s lives.”—Time “[William] Finnegan’s real achievement is to attach identities to the steady stream of faceless statistics that tell us America’s social problems are more serious than we want to believe.”—The Washington Post A fifteen-year-old drug dealer in blighted New Haven, Connecticut; a sleepy Texas town transformed by crack; Mexican American teenagers in Washington State, unable to relate to their immigrant parents and trying to find an identity in gangs; jobless young white supremacists in a downwardly mobile L.A. suburb. William Finnegan spent years embedded with families in four communities across the country to become an intimate observer of the lives he reveals in Cold New World. What emerges from these beautifully rendered portraits is a prescient and compassionate book that never loses sight of its subjects’ humanity. A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK • A LOS ANGELES TIMES BEST NONFICTION SELECTION Praise for Cold New World “Unlike most journalists who drop in for a quick interview and fly back out again, Finnegan spent many weeks with families in each community over a period of several years, enough time to distinguish between the kind of short-term problems that can beset anyone and the longer-term systemic poverty and social disintegration that can pound an entire generation into a groove of despair.”—Los Angeles Times Book Review “The most remarkable of William Finnegan’s many literary gifts is his compassion. Not the fact of it, which we have a right to expect from any personal reporting about the oppressed, but its coolness, its clarity, its ductile strength. . . . Finnegan writes like a dream. His prose is unfailingly lucid, graceful, and specific, his characterization effortless, and the pull of his narrative pure seduction.”—The Village Voice “Four astonishingly intimate and evocative portraits. . . . All of these stories are vividly, honestly and compassionately told. . . . While Cold New World may make us look in new ways at our young people, perhaps its real goal is to make us look at ourselves.”—The Philadelphia Inquirer

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every young person is looking for freedom, but some have to fight harder than others ... In 1960s Ireland there was a special place for disabled children: behind the walls of an institution, cut off from the rest of society. At just nine years old, Martin Naughton was one of these children. Along with his younger sister Barbara he was sent to a Dublin institution, far away from his Irish-speaking home in Spiddal. But Martin wouldn't be sidelined. With the help of some unexpected characters – and an unlikely encounter with his Celtic Football heroes – he began to change the way a generation of young disabled people saw themselves. This is the story of a boy who not only won his own independence, but also led the fight for freedom for all disabled people. 'Martin was a formidable and tireless campaigner for the right of people with disabilities to live in their own communities and homes.' President Michael D. Higgins 'Martin Naughton was a protector, a leader, a gamechanger. In reading this narration of his life, tears filled my eyes.' Download or read book Muhammad Ali written by Thomas Hauser and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2012-02-14 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sweeping biography of one of the greatest and most provocative athletes of all time—“a life that needs to be understood whether you care a whit about boxing or not” (The Boston Globe). Athlete, activist, rebel, poet, legend—Muhammad Ali stood larger than life in the imagination of hundreds of millions of people around the world. A gold medalist at the 1960 Olympics, he won the heavyweight championship at age twenty-two by conquering Sonny Liston in dramatic fashion. In the weeks after the upset victory, he confirmed his membership in the Nation of Islam and told reporters he would no longer answer to his “slave name”: Cassius Clay. The political establishment stripped him of his heavyweight title when he refused induction into the United States Army during the height of the war in Vietnam. Ultimately, Ali returned to reclaim his crown, prevailing in epic fights against the likes of Joe Frazier and George Foreman. His talent and charisma—and above all, his adherence to principle—made him a cultural icon and one of the most beloved sporting figures of all time. But that is only half the tale. Muhammad Ali: His Life and Times is also the story of Ali, the man. Author Thomas Hauser got closer to Ali than any previous biographer. His work—told in Ali’s own words and those of hundreds of family members, friends, rivals, and others who interacted with “The Greatest” over the decades—reveals a deeply spiritual, complex man, whose public and private battles, including his struggle against the devastating effects of Parkinson’s disease, gave new meaning to the word courage and changed forever our conception of what makes a champion. Heralded by the New York Times as “the first definitive biography of the boxer who transcended sports as no other athlete ever has,” Muhammad Ali: His Life and Times is a must-read for anyone seeking to understand the legacy of one of the twentieth century’s most charismatic and controversial superstars. This enhanced ebook includes rare video footage, audio clips, and photos authorized by Muhammad Ali Enterprises.
