Book The Whispers of the Streets

Download or read book The Whispers of the Streets written by J. Earl Loving and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: But we loved that old ROOSEVELT & when he signed that Order 8802 a whole bunch of us got in the service. But you see I didn't trust them too much, & there was a lot of money to be made with all the work that the war caused. I just met this old girl that came up here from New Orleans, because, well, I thought that she was dirt poor & came up to make some money & find a husband. She was the prettiest thing that we ever seen around here, & we started courting almost as soon as she got off the bus ( he chuckled to himself). "Her name was Antoinette. She had the softest light real near white skin that I had ever seen even on white folks, long Black shining hair, and a very pretty smile, you see. She loved to laugh, a&nd I did as much as I could to make her laugh. If she wanted a clown, I sure damned was going to be one. She always spoke in a near whisper in that half French way that they speak down there in the French Quarter down there, & sometimes we didn't know what the hell she was talking about. But she was so damned pretty that I really didn't care since she was my girl. Hell, after a couple of weeks of being together, she started talking that talk to me & whatever she was saying sounded so good to me that I was agreeing all over myself! "She got so excited that we didn't go to see the show like we was suppose to & spent the night together. We made good music that night, if you know what I mean? That was the summer of forty-three, and I was so happy that I didn't know what to do with myself. The next morning she told me that she had to send her Mama a telegram to let her know that we was coming down so she could meet me & show me off to her family. "That's when I realized that the woman was talking about marriage! Well, I tell you that I was scared to death, because I never thought about marrying her or anybody else at the time, you see! But she was such a pretty thing that I said to myself "BOY, AS UGLY AS YOU ARE, YOU AIN'T GOING TO DO MUCH BETTER."

Book excerpt: A WHOLE NEW REASON TO MIND THE GAP It begins with a dead body at the far end of Baker Street tube station, all that remains of American exchange student James Gallagher—and the victim’s wealthy, politically powerful family is understandably eager to get to the bottom of the gruesome murder. The trouble is, the bottom—if it exists at all—is deeper and more unnatural than anyone suspects . . . except, that is, for London constable and sorcerer’s apprentice Peter Grant. With Inspector Nightingale, the last registered wizard in England, tied up in the hunt for the rogue magician known as “the Faceless Man,” it’s up to Peter to plumb the haunted depths of the oldest, largest, and—as of now—deadliest subway system in the world. At least he won’t be alone. No, the FBI has sent over a crack agent to help. She’s young, ambitious, beautiful . . . and a born-again Christian apt to view any magic as the work of the devil. Oh yeah—that’s going to go well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A harrowing account of the Armenian Genocide documented through the stories of those who managed to survive and descendants who refuse to forget The grandchild of Armenians who escaped widespread massacres during the Ottoman Empire a century ago, Varujan Vosganian grew up in Romania hearing firsthand accounts of those who had witnessed horrific killings, burned villages, and massive deportations. In this moving chronicle of the Armenian people's almost unimaginable tragedy, the author transforms true events into a work of fiction firmly grounded in survivor testimonies and historical documentation. Across Syrian desert refugee camps, Russian tundra, and Romanian villages, the book chronicles individual lives destroyed by ideological and authoritarian oppression. But this novel tells an even wider human story. Evocative of all the great sufferings that afflicted the twentieth century--world wars, concentration camps, common graves, statelessness, and others--this book belongs to all peoples whose voices have been lost. Hailed for its documentary value and sensitive authenticity, Vosganian's work has become an international phenomenon.

Download or read book Whispers of the Long Departed written by Edward Ellis, Jr. and published by McBryde Publishing. This book was released on 2021-06 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secrets of our past ... declassified. Herein the reader will find the carefully documented and previously undisclosed story of southern Craven County, dating from before the founding of New Bern through the 1940s. And, told for the first time, how the thriving biracial society on the Neuse River's south shore was radically transformed by both the Civil War and the arrival of Cherry Point Marine Corps Air Station. The author carefully documents that the Civil War Battle of New Bern began on March 13, 1862, the day before the fall of the city to Union troops under General Ambrose Burnside. An entire chapter is dedicated to the story of the clandestine operations of Rebel spies within occupied New Bern and throughout the counties of Craven, Carteret, Pamlico, and Lenoir. More than half of Craven County's population has been African American throughout its long history. "Whispers of the Long Departed" chronicles the Black History of the area covering the lives of the people in and out of slavery. It's replete with rare cemetery, obituary, property, and census records, lists of geographical names and location, and rich genealogical material spanning 300 years, all beneficial for researchers. Areas covered from the early 1700s to the 1940s include the Neuse River, Slocum Creek, Hancock Creek, Clubfoot Creek, Adam's Creek, Havelock, Cherry Point, James City, Thurman, Riverdale, Croatan, Pine Grove, Harlowe, Bachelor, Blades, Camp Bryan, and more. With additional historical information on New Bern, Newport, Morehead City, and Beaufort. New Bern is such a bright historical sun that it dims all the other stars in the firmament around it. It's only natural that the colonial capital, "The Athens of North Carolina," has garnered the bulk of the scholarship and study since the 1700s. Now, Edward Ellis, the gifted storyteller of New Bern History 101, floods new light upon the Neuse River's south shore through the revelation of amazing stories previously unknown and untold. Written by an award-winning journalist, author, and historical sleuth, Whispers of the Long Departed is the culmination of a lifetime dedicated to the research of southern Craven County and its people, both black and white, who have lived, loved, struggled, and triumphed there from the earliest days of America. Ellis succeeds again for his readers who say his conversational style makes history both highly readable and enlightening. The book offers more than 200 illustrations including 22 original and antique maps plus rare historical photographs and artwork.
