Nero's suicide brought to an end the dynasty Augustus had founded, and placed in jeopardy the political system he had devised. Miriam T. Griffin's authoratitive survey of Nero's reign incorporates both a chronological account, as well as an analysis of the reasons for Nero's collapse under the pressure of his role as emperor.

Book excerpt: The author, maintaining the same structure that has characterized the first volume, proposes the whole Nero's lifetime through his monetary iconography. The text opens with a brief introduction, followed by the biography of the "August", however seen in a new light: the intention is to rehabilitate, at least in part, the name of this emperor. Among the most interesting chapters we report:• the portraits and descriptions of relatives and wives who accompanied him during his whole existence;• some of the major architecture buildings that the emperor authorized the construction: the port of Ostia, the "Macellum Magnum", the Temple of Janus, etc; • some particular historical curiosities as the "Congiarium", the "Decursio" and the games called "Neronia";• a series of impressive numismatic portraits dedicated to him, as well as a brief overview of the coinage of the Roman provinces.• a legend that includes a brief method of reading an ancient Roman coin as well as a glossary with the meanings of the major imperial titles. At the end, a glossary of the main numismatic terms and the meanings of the various imperial titles and a special insert of the the entire Julio-Claudian dynasty.

Book Roman Imperial Titulature and Chronology A D 235 284

Download or read book Roman Imperial Titulature and Chronology A D 235 284 written by M Peachin and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1989 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peachin, M. Roman Imperial Titulature and Chronology, A.D. 235-284. 1989 This study is a basic work of reference for the history of the Roman Empire during the midthird century A.D. The book consists of two principal parts. Part two, upon which the first is based, is a catalogue that lists all known variants of the titulature of each emperor from this period. In turn, each variant is accompanied by a list of all attestations (including coins, inscriptions, papyri) of that formula. An introduction traces briefly the historical development of the official titular formula, and then discusses the method of granting this formula at the beginning of the period in question. The introduction is followed by a chapter that evaluates the source material. Given a secure basic understanding of how the ancient testimonia are to be employed, the book then progresses to a chapter that sets out a complete chronology for the period. SA 29 (1989), 543 p. Book The Metallurgy of Roman Silver Coinage

Download or read book The Metallurgy of Roman Silver Coinage written by Kevin Butcher and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-02 with total page 841 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fineness of Roman imperial and provincial coinage has been regarded as an indicator of the broader fiscal health of the Roman Empire, with the apparent gradual decline of the silver content being treated as evidence for worsening deficits and the contraction of the supply of natural resources from which the coins were made. This book explores the composition of Roman silver coinage of the first century AD, re-examining traditional interpretations in the light of an entirely new programme of analyses of the coins, which illustrates the inadequacy of many earlier analytical projects. It provides new evidence for the supply of materials and refining and minting technology. It can even pinpoint likely episodes of recycling old coins and, when combined with the study of hoards, hints at possible strategies of stockpiling of metal. The creation of reserves bears directly on the question of the adequacy of revenues and fiscal health.
