The following two sections address guest stars and recurring characters. Modern Family was known for signing big-name movie and television stars as well as developing some of the most unique and fascinating recurring characters in sitcom history. Thus, two chapters are specifically devoted to these illustrious scene-stealers. The show's vast guest star list featured well-known thespians, such as Kevin Hart, James Marsden, Matthew Broderick, Greg Kinnear, Elizabeth Banks, Jane Krakowski, Edward Norton, Shelley Long, Chazz Palminteri, Matt Dillon, Nathan Lane, Benjamin Bratt, Jesse Eisenberg, Leslie Mann, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Jennifer Tilly, and many more. In addition, the trivia inquiry delves even deeper by spotlighting the most popular recurring characters, namely Dylan, Frank Dunphy, Gil Thorpe, Dede, Sal, Shorty, Pepper, and Javier, to mention a few. The next segment of the book covers the most memorable moments of the show which pertain to all three branches of the Pritchett family tree. The questions address broader episode plots and character storylines. The remaining eleven chapters cover specific information directly associated with the members of each family—Pritchetts (Jay, Gloria and Manny), Dunphys (Phil, Claire, Haley, Alex and Luke), and Pritchett-Tuckers (Mitch, Cam and Lily)—highlighting the most uproarious scenes and unforgettable episodes while testing the viewer’s attention to detail. Download or read book Faith in The West Wing written by David W. Graybeal and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-01-10 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proverbial wisdom advises against discussing politics and religion in polite company. However, Aaron Sorkin and the producers of the award-winning television series The West Wing (NBC, 1999-2006) didn't seem to get the memo. Still popular and surprisingly relevant several years after its final episode, this primetime dramatization of a fictional presidential administration regularly incorporated religious rhetoric, perspectives, and practices in its characters and storylines. With episodes featuring such explicitly religious titles as "Take This Sabbath Day," "Faith-Based Initiative," and "In God We Trust," and with characters with such biblically based names as Josiah, Josh, Toby, Abbey, and Sam, the series took thoughtful religious faith seriously and implied that spirituality can serve as a vital component of civic virtue. While by no means an exhaustive examination of all seven seasons, this collection of essays explores some of the more prominent portrayals of religious faith and practice throughout the series to prompt and guide the readers' own reflections and observations. Discussion questions are also provided at the end of each chapter for use in watch parties and other small group gatherings.

Download or read book Walk With Us How The West Wing Changed Our Lives written by Claire Handscombe and published by Claire Handscombe. This book was released on 2016-05-14 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The West Wing premiered in 1999. That's a long time ago. Back then, we were worrying about the Millennium Bug, paying $700 for DVD players, and using pagers. 1999: a century ago. And yet, the show continues to have an impact that is arguably unique. If you live or work in DC, references to it are inescapable. People have walked down the aisle to the theme music. Or they’ve named children, pets, GPS systems, and even an iPhone app after the characters. Or they’ve started Twitter accounts as the characters to continue the storyline and comment on current political events. Or they credit it for closer relationships with their family members or a way out of depression. In this anthology of quotes and essays, contributors from six countries, ranging in age from twenty to seventy years old, tell their West Wing stories.
Download or read book The Prime Time Presidency written by Shawn J. Parry-Giles and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrasting strong women and multiculturalism with portrayals of a heroic white male leading the nation into battle, The Prime-Time Presidency explores the NBC drama The West Wing, paying particular attention to its role in promoting cultural meaning about the presidency and U.S. nationalism. Based in a careful, detailed analysis of the "first term" of The West Wing's President Josiah Bartlet, this criticism highlights the ways the text negotiates powerful tensions and complex ambiguities at the base of U.S. national identity--particularly the role of gender, race, and militarism in the construction of U.S. nationalism. Unlike scattered and disparate collections of essays, Trevor Parry-Giles and Shawn J. Parry-Giles offer a sustained, ideologically driven criticism of The West Wing. The Prime-time Presidency presents a detailed critique of the program rooted in presidential history, an appreciation of television's power as a source of political meaning, and television's contribution to the articulation of U.S. national identity.
Download or read book The Aesthetics of Culture in Buffy the Vampire Slayer written by Matthew Pateman and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-03-21 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the TV screen as elsewhere, there is often more than meets the eye. For decades, television has offered not just entertainment, but observations--subtle and otherwise--on society. This book examines the cultural commentary contained in Buffy, the Vampire Slayer, a show that ran for seven seasons (1997-2003) and 144 episodes. On the surface, Buffy is the marriage of a high school drama to gothic horror. This somewhat unusual vehicle is used to present, via the character of Buffy, fairly typical views of late 20th century culture-teenage problems; issues regarding a broken home; and the search for meaning and validation. In addition, subtler themes, such as cultural views of knowledge, ethnicity and history, are woven into the show's critique of popular culture. Organized into two sections, this volume offers an in-depth examination of the show: first, through the lens of Buffy's confrontation with culture, and second, from the complex perspectives of the individual characters. Issues such as values, ethical choices and the implications of one's actions are discussed--without ever losing sight of the limitations of a medium that will always be dominated by financial concerns. The final chapter summarizes what Buffy has to say about today's society. An appendix lists Buffy episodes in chronological order.

Download or read book Why Everyone Else Is a Hypocrite written by Robert Kurzban and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-27 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evolutionary psychology behind human inconsistency We're all hypocrites. Why? Hypocrisy is the natural state of the human mind. Robert Kurzban shows us that the key to understanding our behavioral inconsistencies lies in understanding the mind's design. The human mind consists of many specialized units designed by the process of evolution by natural selection. While these modules sometimes work together seamlessly, they don't always, resulting in impossibly contradictory beliefs, vacillations between patience and impulsiveness, violations of our supposed moral principles, and overinflated views of ourselves. This modular, evolutionary psychological view of the mind undermines deeply held intuitions about ourselves, as well as a range of scientific theories that require a "self" with consistent beliefs and preferences. Modularity suggests that there is no "I." Instead, each of us is a contentious "we"--a collection of discrete but interacting systems whose constant conflicts shape our interactions with one another and our experience of the world. In clear language, full of wit and rich in examples, Kurzban explains the roots and implications of our inconsistent minds, and why it is perfectly natural to believe that everyone else is a hypocrite.
