Book The Business of the Church

Download or read book The Business of the Church written by John W. Wimberly, and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2010-05-18 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pastors are called to be not only leaders with vision, but also managers of congregational systems, says John Wimberly in The Business of the Church. Drawing on his thirty-six years in ordained ministry, Wimberly weaves the realities of congregational dynamics and faith-centered purpose together with practical, proven approaches to business management. A student and friend of Rabbi Edwin Friedman, Wimberly builds on Friedman's systems theory as he helps readers avoid common pitfalls and put into practice effective techniques of congregational management. The book begins with a foundational discussion of how a systems approach helps congregational managers identify areas of dysfunction and effective solutions. Managing the critical 'inputs' of people, facilities, and finances has a direct bearing on the desired 'outputs' of proclamation, pastoral care, and mission. A strategic plan, through which a congregation sets its goals and identifies and prioritizes resources, is an essential management tool for both pastors and lay leaders. The author's conversational writing style and many real-life examples make a seemingly complicated, mysterious topic for some an engaging and easily applicable read.

Book Managing Congregations in a Virtual Age

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Managing Congregations in a Virtual Age, John W. Wimberly Jr. draws on the experience of the business community, and on a diverse group of skilled pastors and rabbis, as he lays out the opportunities and challenges of working from home for congregations and staff, offering principles and best practices for successfully managing remote workers and ministries. The move toward working from home is part of a rapidly changing work environment for employers and employees alike. Large parts of the business world have mastered managing their staff, located around the country and the world, virtually. For many faith communities, however, the sudden move to working from home amid the Covid-19 pandemic involved significant upheaval. Fortunately, various forms of technology and productivity tools can make this shift easier. Wimberly focuses on how congregational leaders can ensure accountability and productivity, create a sense of staff as a team, help older staff members learn how to work from home, and determine what hardware and software staff members and the congregation need to support effective communication. This comprehensive guide will serve congregations well into the future, even as technology and circumstances change.

You will not be sorry you invested in this training for you and your ministry team. Rev. Lloyd Tremain, Paradise Community Church of the Nazarene A thorough, practical and much needed Biblically sound treatment. Wish it had been available 20 years ago when I could have use it to a great positive effect Dan Wilderman, Retired Assemblies of God Pastor the order and practical instruction presented will benefit all organizational levels of any Christian Church today. John Steffensen, Radio Host, Christ Today KKXX Radio Chico CA Hopefully this manual will lay the groundwork for pastors and churches to spread the burden and get others involved in the work of the ministry. I once had a pastor that was often unprepared for a service because he was busy helping a parishioner with some needed chore, or church maintenance, or the myriad other duties needed to keep a church going. The result was that the church stayed the same size. Some leave; others enter. But no growth was apparent despite the considerable preaching talents of the pastor. God is apparently making sure he has only the amount of people that he can handle. We learn that the ancient church had some of the same challenges we face today. Acts 6:14 says, Now in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplying, there arose a complaint against the Hebrews by the Hellenists, because their widows were neglected in the daily distribution. Then the twelve summoned the multitude of the disciples and said, It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables. (Read this as doing manual labor.) Therefore, brethren, seek out from among you seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business; (the manual labor) but we will give ourselves continually to prayer and to the ministry of the word. It was even bringing strife to the local body. What did they do? And what was the result? The first thing the apostles did was pick out people they knew to be wise and that had had received the baptism of the Holy Spirit and appointed them to do practical ministerial duties (the manual labor). This freed up the apostles so they could minister the Word of God. Wow, Gods way is so simple, and our grandiose plans just waste time and get nothing done. Pastors need to learn from the apostles and appoint over this business so the pastors has more time to do the spiritual work that promotes Gods church. This manual gives a road map for accomplishing the goal of choosing and training people and tips for managing them.

Book excerpt: Self-supporting ministers are wonderfully non-standard. They are deployed in a wide variety ofways and have a range of motivations, working patterns and training needs. Sometimes underused or overworked, they may feel unrecognized and under-supported. As the Church turns increasingly to its volunteer minsters, however, there are encouraging signs that SSMs are being given more creative opportunities than in the past. ‘This handbook is full of sound common sense. . . [it] is both an encouragement and a challenge in the task of re-imagining ministry today.’ Robert Atwell, Bishop of Exeter

Book Team Leadership In Christian Ministry

Download or read book Team Leadership In Christian Ministry written by Kenneth O. Gangel and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 1997-01-05 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Team leadership is the exercise of one's spiritual gifts under the call of God to serve a certain group of people in achieving the goals God has given them toward the end of glorifying Christ.'How is your church or organization governed? Does it have an authoritarian, top-down administration? Is the ministry vision developed by a few top officials, with little input from staff or volunteers? Today the definition of an effective leader has changed. No longer does the model leader manage like the Lone Ranger - either do it his way or no way. Today the model leader shares responsibility with fellow team leaders and seeks to serve them. In this complete revision of his earlier work, Building Leaders for Church Education, Dr. Gangel carefully lays a biblical foundation for the team leadership model. This leadership is not dogmatic control or personality worship. It has no room for political power plays. Instead, it is Paul gently nurturing young Christians in his epistles. It is Barnabas willingly thrusting others into situations where they develop their own gifts. It is Christ, choosing not one, but twelve men to carry on His ministry. It is servant leadership. With examples, illustrations, and suggestions for further reading at the end of each chapter, Dr. Gangel prods and encourages the reader to move beyond the safety net of autocratic leadership into the rewarding, effective practice of leading with and through others.

Book Avoiding Pastoral Pitfalls

Download or read book Avoiding Pastoral Pitfalls written by James Osterhaus and published by Hendrickson Publishers. This book was released on 2021-10-05 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James P. Osterhaus offers pastors tangible and much-needed advice to help them at work and in their personal lives—advice that they do not often hear in seminary. More and more, men and women who minister find themselves depressed. Their marriages are often in trouble. Their families are negatively affected. Often, they have few if any close friends. Over the years, Osterhaus has coached and counseled hundreds of these ministers from various traditions on four continents. As he sat with ministers who have been nearly crushed by the burdens of ministry, he came to learn that the average training of ministers across the globe is woefully deficient in the very areas that allow ministers to avoid many of the pitfalls. This guide is a result of those countless conversations. Avoiding Pastoral Pitfalls is an attempt to fill some of the void left in the training of pastors. It offers down-to-earth, practical guidance in areas of ministry that are often neglected: understanding yourself (both strengths and weaknesses), what effective leadership looks like, the complicated organizational makeup of the church, how to deal with conflict effectively, how to make sense of your governing board, and how to both enter a new ministry and leave a ministry effectively.

Book Leading and Managing Your Church

Download or read book Leading and Managing Your Church written by Carl F. George and published by Fleming H. Revell Company. This book was released on 1987 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Carl George and Bob Logan well know, this mentality is changing. Studies of growing churches show that the leadership role of the pastor is a key to church vitality. The ideal role of the church-growth pastor is now being described as an "equipper," rather than an "enabler." This implies pastoral initiative in setting goals, obtaining goal ownership from the people, and mobilizing the laity for effective ministry aimed at accomplishing the goals.

Book Surviving Ministry

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael E. Osborne
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2016-05-06
  • ISBN : 1498280293
  • Pages : 168 pages

Download or read book Surviving Ministry written by Michael E. Osborne and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-05-06 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Being a pastor has its rewards and pleasures. But churches can be unsafe places. They are filled with broken, imperfect people. Many ministers of the gospel walk into a church naive about the potential hazards of their vocation. They are vulnerable to difficult people, unresolved conflict, incompatible visions, hidden agendas, mission drift, and sin--their own and that of others. Other pastors feel trapped in a ministry hurricane and don't know what to do. They feel like failures. They're thinking about leaving the ministry. They are looking for help and hope--not from an "expert" detached from the real world of ministry--but from someone who has suffered through church hurricanes and lived to share the story. Moreover, they need to know they are not alone. Surviving Ministry: How to Weather the Storms of Church Leadership includes the author's own story as well as true stories from other pastors who have been in the eye of the hurricane. Discouraged ministers looking for biblical, practical, gospel-centered advice for storm proofing their churches, homes, and hearts have found a friend. Surviving Ministry will equip them to stay resilient before, during, and after seasons of difficulty.
