It really doesn't matter when they're this funny. In Glasgow's DNA there is an inbuilt belief that making a fool of yourself is OK, as long as it gets a laugh, makes a buck, builds a better society of whatever. After all, nobody but a real fool never made a mistake and it's a well-known fact that Weegies do try harder and laugh louder. In Weegie Wit and Wisdom, find out why Glaswegians drink, the best threats and insults for every occasion and why the Weegie approach to life helps Glasgow consistently top the league as the UK's happiest city. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "You, ya bastard! Ahm gonny stick your heid so far up your arse that you'll think that nothing has happened!" Ah, the Glasgow wag, always ready with a bon mot for any situation. Weegies have long been known for the quickness of their wit, the sharpness of their tongues. But behind every surreal retort and casual, bloodthirsty threat, is there a hidden profoundity? A deep philosophical stance? And does it matter when they're this funny? Ian Black, the best-selling author of Weegies vs Edinbuggers, discovered his philosophy for life on a number 63 bus heading for Partick from outside the Barras, copying it from a lad in his teens sitting beside him. The youngster was clearly mentally challenged but he was bubbly and cheerful, shaking his tambourine in everyone's faces, singing and smiling, asking everyone for a penny and raising a few smiles from the passengers. When the conductor came up and collected everyone's fares, Ian noticed that the young lad wasn't asked. And when the conductor had moved on a step or two the young boy turned to him and said: 'If you kid on you're daft, you get a free hurl.' It's been working for Ian ever since and this guide to Weegie Wit & Wisdom now lets you into the secrets of the Weegie world - and will amuse and entertain along the way.

Book Dictionary of the British English Spelling System

Download or read book Dictionary of the British English Spelling System written by Greg Brooks and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2015-03-30 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will tell all you need to know about British English spelling. It's a reference work intended for anyone interested in the English language, especially those who teach it, whatever the age or mother tongue of their students. It will be particularly useful to those wishing to produce well-designed materials for teaching initial literacy via phonics, for teaching English as a foreign or second language, and for teacher training. English spelling is notoriously complicated and difficult to learn; it is correctly described as much less regular and predictable than any other alphabetic orthography. However, there is more regularity in the English spelling system than is generally appreciated. This book provides, for the first time, a thorough account of the whole complex system. It does so by describing how phonemes relate to graphemes and vice versa. It enables searches for particular words, so that one can easily find, not the meanings or pronunciations of words, but the other words with which those with unusual phoneme-grapheme/grapheme-phoneme correspondences keep company. Other unique features of this book include teacher-friendly lists of correspondences and various regularities not described by previous authorities, for example the strong tendency for the letter-name vowel phonemes (the names of the letters ) to be spelt with those single letters in non-final syllables.

Book A History of Poets Reception of Mark Twain 1863 1936

Download or read book A History of Poets Reception of Mark Twain 1863 1936 written by Gary Scharnhorst and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-05-15 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of poetry about Mark Twain explores a neglected dimension in his critical and popular reception during a period of over seventy years. The three hundred and fifty published ballads, sonnets, limericks, lyrics, couplets, and quatrains, including some in dialect, run the gamut from the banal and piquant to the eloquent, from rhymes by anonymous poetasters to highbrow tributes. Organized chronologically by topic, the sections also indicate the frequency with which the poems were reprinted and the venues in which they appeared. Though they were pitched to entertain general readers, this gathering should also prove useful to teachers and scholars of American literature. In all, they trace the crests in Twain’s fame and contemporary popular reputation over the decades and silhouette his pervasive presence in literary circles around the world during the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries.

Book excerpt: As John Green, New York Times bestselling author of The Fault in Our Stars said, “King Dork will rock your world.” The cult favorite from Frank Portman, aka Dr. Frank of the Mr. T. Experience, is a book like nothing ever done before--King Dork literally has something for everyone: At least a half-dozen mysteries, love, mistaken identity, girls, monks, books, blood, bubblegum, and rock and roll. This book is based on music--a passion most kids have--and it has original (hilarious) songs and song lyrics throughout. When Tom Henderson finds his deceased father’s copy of J. D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye, his world is turned upside down. Suddenly high school gets more complicated: Tom (aka King Dork) is in the middle of at least half a dozen mysteries involving dead people, naked people, fake people, a secret code, girls, and rock and roll. As he goes through sophomore year, he finds clues that may very well solve the puzzle of his father’s death and—oddly—reveal the secret to attracting semi-hot girls (the secret might be being in a band, if he can find a drummer who can count to four. A brilliant story told in first person, King Dork includes a glossary and a bandography, which readers will find helpful and hilarious. Praise for King Dork: “Basically, if you are a human being with even a vague grasp of the English language, King Dork, will rock your world.”—John Green, author of The Fault in Our Stars “[No account of high school] has made me laugh more than King Dork. . . . Grade A.”—Entertainment Weekly “Impossibly brilliant.”—Time “Provides a window into what it would be like if Holden Caulfield read The Catcher in the Rye.”—New York Post [STAR] “Original, heartfelt, and sparkling with wit and intelligence. This novel will linger long in readers’ memories.”—School Library Journal, Starred [STAR] “A biting and witty high-school satire.”—Kirkus Reviews, Starred [STAR] “Tom’s narration is piercingly satirical and acidly witty.”—The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books, Starred “Loaded with sharp and offbeat humor.”—USA Today “King Dork is smart, funny, occasionally raunchy and refreshingly clear about what it’s like to be in high school.”—San Francisco Chronicle “King Dork: Best Punk Rock Book Ever.”—The Village Voice “I love this book as much as I hated high school, and that’s some of the highest praise I can possibly give.”—Bookslut.com

Book excerpt: EXAMS! Just the word is enough to bring you out in a muck sweat. We've all been there, staring at the paper, wondering what it means, and if we'll get extra marks for a funny answer or just pelters and an 'F' for F'un Eejit-Heid Failure. F'un Exams is a hilarious collation of exam answers that most of us would have liked to have made, just for the hell of it. In Home Eccy, for instance, the question, 'Name three typical Scottish dishes' got the answer, 'A cup, a plate, and a wee saucer with a chip out of it.' Was that you? So reminisce, step back into the exam hall, and have a laugh at the true and allegedly true howlers in F'un Exams. And if it wasn't you that gave these answers, you'll wish it was.

Book Advice for Future Corpses and Those Who Love Them

Download or read book Advice for Future Corpses and Those Who Love Them written by Sallie Tisdale and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2018-06-12 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A NEW YORK TIMES BOOK CRITICS’ TOP 10 BOOK OF THE YEAR “In its loving, fierce specificity, this book on how to die is also a blessedly saccharine-free guide for how to live” (The New York Times). Former NEA fellow and Pushcart Prize-winning writer Sallie Tisdale offers a lyrical, thought-provoking, yet practical perspective on death and dying in Advice for Future Corpses (and Those Who Love Them). Informed by her many years working as a nurse, with more than a decade in palliative care, Tisdale provides a frank, direct, and compassionate meditation on the inevitable. From the sublime (the faint sound of Mozart as you take your last breath) to the ridiculous (lessons on how to close the sagging jaw of a corpse), Tisdale leads us through the peaks and troughs of death with a calm, wise, and humorous hand. Advice for Future Corpses is more than a how-to manual or a spiritual bible: it is a graceful compilation of honest and intimate anecdotes based on the deaths Tisdale has witnessed in her work and life, as well as stories from cultures, traditions, and literature around the world. Tisdale explores all the heartbreaking, beautiful, terrifying, confusing, absurd, and even joyful experiences that accompany the work of dying, including: A Good Death: What does it mean to die “a good death”? Can there be more than one kind of good death? What can I do to make my death, or the deaths of my loved ones, good? Communication: What to say and not to say, what to ask, and when, from the dying, loved ones, doctors, and more. Last Months, Weeks, Days, and Hours: What you might expect, physically and emotionally, including the limitations, freedoms, pain, and joy of this unique time. Bodies: What happens to a body after death? What options are available to me after my death, and how do I choose—and make sure my wishes are followed? Grief: “Grief is the story that must be told over and over...Grief is the breath after the last one.” Beautifully written and compulsively readable, Advice for Future Corpses offers the resources and reassurance that we all need for planning the ends of our lives, and is essential reading for future corpses everywhere. “Sallie Tisdale’s elegantly understated new book pretends to be a user’s guide when in fact it’s a profound meditation” (David Shields, bestselling author of Reality Hunger).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Working as a stripper is anything but easy. You're often treated like a living blow-up doll and a therapist simultaneously. It's a life that many judge easily ... until you know more. Sita Kaylin, a California-based veteran in the sex industry, has lived the pitfalls of being naked in front of strangers and the absurdities that arise when you fake intimacy for a living. She left home when she was sixteen, worked hard at several jobs and eventually started college after dropping out of high school. There, a roommate turned her on to stripping, revealing a way out of the crushing financial pressures she felt and her struggles as a pre-law student with very little time or energy to study. She had no idea how wild her journey would become and what a large part of her life it would be. Sita's stories take shape through an often altered, occasionally sarcastic, sometimes illegal and frequently funny magnifying glass she holds up to not just the sex industry, but also to human needs and desires, modern relationships, mental health, personal independence. Anything But a Wasted Life is the memoir of an unorthodox life about a woman who has rarely said 'no' to life.
