Book A Sideways Look at Time

Download or read book A Sideways Look at Time written by Jay Griffiths and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2004-03-08 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brilliant and poetic exploration of the way that we experience time in our everyday lives. Why does time seem so short? How does women's time differ from men's? Why does time seem to move slowly in the countryside and quickly in cities? How do different cultures around the world see time? In A Sideways Look at Time, Jay Griffiths takes readers on an extraordinary tour of time as we have never seen it before. With this dazzling and defiant work, Griffiths introduces us to dimensions of time that are largely forgotten in our modern lives. She presents an infectious argument for other, more magical times, the diverse cycles of nature, of folktale or carnival, when time is unlimited and on our side. This is a book for those who suspect that there's more to time than clocks. Irresistible and provocative, A Sideways Look at Time could change the way we view time-forever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comets have not only blazed across the celestial vault throughout human history, they have embellished the night sky since the Earth itself formed some 4.5 billion years ago. Comets were among the first-born solid bodies in the solar system, and their frozen nuclei tell of the primordial chemistry and chaos that ultimately resulted in the formation of the planets, the evolution of life and us. For all this, however, comets have long been celestial oddities: they baffled our distant ancestors, and human society continues to marvel and speculate wildly at their appearance even to the present day. Cutting against the perceived constancy of the stars, comets seemingly present themselves at random times and they are often interpreted as harbingers of terrestrial change - both good and ill. How then are we to tame the comet: where do they form, how do they move, and can their appearances be predicted? Such questions have preoccupied astronomers for centuries but comets have only gradually allowed the secrets of their wayward flight to be revealed. In this book I explore the historical struggle to understand not only the place of comets within a societal context, but also the scientific quest to make their paths amenable to mathematical certitude. The latter narrative is the more technical in content, but it took tactile form with the invention, in 1732, of the cometarium, a mechanical device to demonstrate the first two of Kepler's planetary laws. And, this development was later paralleled, in the mid to late 19th century, by the development of various mechanical devices (analog computers) to help obtain solutions to Kepler's Problem - the problem which asks, exactly where in its orbit is a given comet at some specific set time. The telling of the wayward comets story covers the past two millennia of human history, and it takes us from the phenomenological musings of Aristotle, through the exactitude of Newton's gravitational theory and calculus, to the truly incredible study of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, by the European Space Agency's Rosetta spacecraft, in the modern era.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wayward Pilgrim is an account of the desultory pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Spain made by a professor of Spanish on Sabbatical leave from the Salisbury University in Maryland. The professor undertakes the pilgrimage not as a religious experience but as an attempt to better understand the history and culture of Spain. In the book, he combines an account of the Medieval pilgrimage with the diversions often taken by the modem pilgrim. In the end, the professor comes to realize the hardships, the endurance and the hardy and devote spirit of the true pilgrim. In addition to the account of the pilgrimage, the book also contains vignettes of great moments and great historical figures that changed the world forever.

Book excerpt: A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK OF THE YEAR • A “furious and addictive new novel” (The New York Times) about mothers and daughters, and one woman's midlife reckoning as she flees her suburban life. “Exhilarating ... reads like a burning fever dream. A virtuosic, singular and very funny portrait of a woman seeking sanity and purpose in a world gone mad.” —The New York Times Book Review Samantha Raymond's life has begun to come apart: her mother is ill, her teenage daughter is increasingly remote, and at fifty-two she finds herself staring into "the Mids"—that hour of supreme wakefulness between three and four in the morning in which women of a certain age suddenly find themselves contemplating motherhood, mortality, and, in this case, the state of our unraveling nation. When she falls in love with a beautiful, decrepit house in a hardscrabble neighborhood in Syracuse, she buys it on a whim and flees her suburban life—and her family—as she grapples with how to be a wife, a mother, and a daughter, in a country that is coming apart at the seams. Dana Spiotta's Wayward is a stunning novel about aging, about the female body, and about female complexity in contemporary America. Probing and provocative, brainy and sensual, it is a testament to our weird times, to reforms and resistance and utopian wishes, and to the beauty of ruins.

Download or read book Shaping the Day written by Paul Glennie and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 2009-02-12 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Timekeeping is an essential activity in the modern world, and we take it for granted that our lives are shaped by the hours of the day. Yet what seems so ordinary today is actually the extraordinary outcome of centuries of technical innovation and circulation of ideas about time. Shaping the Day is a pathbreaking study of the practice of timekeeping in England and Wales between 1300 and 1800. Drawing on many unique historical sources, ranging from personal diaries to housekeeping manuals, Paul Glennie and Nigel Thrift illustrate how a particular kind of common sense about time came into being, and how it developed during this period. Many remarkable figures make their appearance, ranging from the well-known, such as Edmund Halley, Samuel Pepys, and John Harrison, who solved the problem of longitude, to less familiar characters, including sailors, gamblers, and burglars. Overturning many common perceptions of the past-for example, that clock time and the industrial revolution were intimately related-this unique historical study will engage all readers interested in how 'telling the time' has come to dominate our way of life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘When planning a murder, many variables must be considered...Preparation is akin to a screenwriter stitching together plots and scenes, establishing timelines, and illuminating the manner by which the killer will escape prosecution.’ Paige Elizabeth Turner is back with Clock Face of Ills, the third instalment of the Watts Happening? Investigations series. In the book, Olivia Watts, former police sergeant and now proprietor of ‘Watts Happening? Investigations’ is commissioned to assist a covert operation investigating allegations against DI Philip McMaster. McMaster is embroiled in a boundary dispute with his neighbour Giuseppe Caruso. When an untapped vein of a historic gold belt is discovered beneath the properties, McMaster offers to purchase the Caruso property. Days later, Caruso is found dead in his home. The routine ‘tail and report’ investigation uncovers McMaster’s association with a gangland killer and a crooked solicitor. Olivia ties McMaster to fraud, deception and murder, only to find her evidence against the long-serving officer rejected by the police brotherhood. Within days Olivia’s life is threatened. Will she uncover enough evidence in time to protect herself and find Caruso’s killer? Clock Face of Ills is a gripping crime novel that keeps readers hooked until the very end. Comparable to the work of Sue Grafton, the book will appeal to fans of crime novels, especially readers who have enjoyed Paige’s previous two novels, Beyond All Doubt (Matador, 2017) and Whisper of Death (Matador, 2017).

Book Poetics of Slow Cinema

Download or read book Poetics of Slow Cinema written by Emre Çağlayan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-12 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses slow cinema, a contemporary global production trend that has recently gained momentum in film theory and criticism. Slow films dispense with narrative progression in favour of a contemplative mood, which is stretched out to the extreme in order to impel viewers to confront cinematic temporality in all its undivided glory. Despite its critical reputation as an oblique mode of film practice, slow cinema continues to attract, challenge and provoke audiences. Focusing on filmmakers Béla Tarr, Tsai Ming-liang and Nuri Bilge Ceylan, this book identifies nostalgia, absurd humour and boredom as intrinsic dimensions of slow cinema and explores the ways in which these directors negotiate local filmmaking conventions with the demands of a global cinephile niche. As the first study to treat slow cinema both as an aesthetic style and as an institutional discourse, Poetics of Slow Cinema offers an illuminating perspective on the tradition’s historical genealogy and envisions it with a Janus-faced disposition in the age of digital technologies—lamenting at once the passing of difficult, ambiguous modernist film and capitalizing on the yearning for its absence.
