Book excerpt: ""The history of which this is the first volume is, in the main, the history of the part played in the war by British air forces. It is based chiefly on the records of the Air Ministry collected and preserved at the Historical Section. Official records do not in themselves make history. They are colourless and bare. In the business of interpreting and supplementing them we have been much helped by the kindness of many military and naval officers and of many civilian experts."" The series forms a commemorative tribute to mark the passing of one of the world's bloodiest wars, offering new perspectives on this tragic yet fascinating period of human history. This book was released on 2020-07 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book in the seven volume official history of the RAF in the Great War. This opening volume - the only one written by Sir Walter Raleigh before his death - covers the early days of the RFC and RNAS and the first months of the war. This official history of the part played in the Great War by the Royal Air Force is based chiefly on the records of the Air Ministry, collected and preserved by the historical section, supplemented by the contributions of many military and naval officers and civilian experts, as well as accounts of eyewitnesses. In all there are six volumes of text and maps plus a supporting volume of appendices, published between 1922 and 1937. The author of this first volume, Sir Walter Raleigh, died after finishing it and the task was taken over by H.A Jones who completed it. Volume One describes the beginnings of the Air Force and the institution of the Royal Flying Corps (RFC). It covers the early months of the war (Mons to Ypres 1914) and the activities of Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) in 1914. It concludes with an account of the expansion of the RFC and RNAS during the war - fighters, bombers and aircraft carriers among other developments - and discusses the interplay between the two. The index to this volume is incorporated in that of Volume 2.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War in the Air, Vol. 3: Being the Story of the Part Played in the Great War by the Royal Air Force The air - raid maps which accompany the volume are printed as they were compiled during the war, with the exception that the author has been able to identify all the military airships, about which we were often uncertain, and to confirm the identity, in a very few doubtful instances, of naval airships. Where a study of the German records has indicated a possible minor inaccuracy in the maps, a note has been added. The paths of the airships are shown in colour on some of the maps. This has been done for clarity, and the colours have no other significance. In this volume the author is concerned with the activities of the airships in their attacks on Great Britain. He was, however, impressed by the records of the great amount of reconnaissance and other work accomplished by naval airships over the North Sea. The reader should remember that the air raids were a part only of the opera tions of the German naval airship fleet.
