Book The War and Wales Classic Reprint

Download or read book The War and Wales Classic Reprint written by John Vyrnwy Morgan and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War and Wales I desire to state that the chapter on the Right Hon. D. Lloyd George, M.P., is an expansion - on a very considerable scale - of an article which I contributed to the Fortnightly Review, and which appeared May, 1913. I am obliged to the Editor for his permission to reproduce it in this volume. The chapter on the Right Hon. W. Morris Hughes, Premier of Australia, was submitted to Mr. Hughes himself, and I have his authority for saying that all the facts are correct. For reading some portions of the proofs my thanks are due to the Rev. G. C. Rowe, B.A., Principal of St. Andrew's School, Tenby, and to Mr. R. L. C. Morrison. For help of various kinds in connection with this and other works I am greatly indebted to the Rev. D. Silyn Evans, Aberdare; also to my wife, whose services to me in the same direction have been invaluable. Having regard to the fact that the character of this work is philosophical rather than historical, and the greatly increased cost of production, which an author cannot pass on to the public, the preparation of an Index has been dispensed with. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wales and the Wars of the Roses I have ventured to use contemporary Welsh poets as authorities; this has made it necessary to include a chapter on their value as historical evidence. It was thought necessary, also, to give some account of the state of things in Wales during the first half of the fifteenth century, and of the part played by Welshmen in the last phases of the Hundred Years' War with France. Book In the March and Borderland of Wales Classic Reprint

Download or read book In the March and Borderland of Wales Classic Reprint written by A. G. Bradley and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the March and Borderland of Wales In regard to the title of this book it maybe asked, "Why so much of it? Why not simply The March of Wales?" Or again it may prove disconcerting to many to find Gower and further Glamorgan in the Marches, so loosely has the term been used. Right gladly would I commit this little work to an indulgent public with the briefer title - for no one suffers more after inconvenience in a small way from a long one than the author - if I dare! I might doubtless stifle any personal qualms and quite successfully impose an almost venial inaccuracy on the ninety and nine potential readers, but it is that hundredth one who intimidates me. I feel that for the most tempting and sonorous title it is not worth risking the good opinion of ones critical friends and the rebuke of many unknown critics and the further certainty of being told I had not even the excuse of ignorance. Still, I went so far as to discuss the legitimacy of the briefer alternative with two or three of the former. One of them thought it would be distinctly immoral to call a book dealing so much with the border counties The March of Wales. Another thought the liberty was permissible provided that it was conspicuously apologized for in the Preface. I did not like this, as I was quite sure that some who would have passed the title without comment would now note its technical inaccuracy with the air of original criticism. So I chose the less handy but impeccable designation and a quiet conscience. For though march is a term synonymous with boundary, the Marches of Wales came to mean politically, legally and geographically, those slices of Welsh territory conquered by the adventuring Norman barons during the century or so following the conquest of England, and held by them and their heirs as quasi-independent lordships outside the jurisdiction of the Crown. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of the Civil War in Wales, Vol. 1 of 2: And the Marches, 1642-1649 Some years ago, while engaged in an investiga tion into the history of my native parish, I was anxious to learn whether the Castle, which forms its principal attraction, had been garrisoned during the Civil War. I found that there was no book which could give me the information I wanted, but I discovered that vast materials existed in the bound less waste of the King's Pamphlets at the British Museum, in the State Papers at the Record Office, and in private collections; and that so far as Wales was concerned it was an untrodden field. After some hesitation I resolved to attempt to contribute something towards a history of the Principality during that period. The leisure. The Britons, perceiving their condition most desperate, once more sent their miserable complaints to Etius, in these tragical words: To zetius, thrice consul, the groans of the Britons the barbarians drive us to the sea, and the sea drives us back to them, and so, distracted betwixt two deaths, we are either drowned or erish by the swordf But they solicited to no purpose: tife Romans having al ready bid absolutely farewell to Britain, and the empire being cruelly oppressed by the Goths and other barbarous nations, they were not in a condition possibly to assist them. The Britons, therefore, finding themselves absolutely for saken by the Romans, and conceiving it utterly impracticable to drive away the barbarians by their own strength, saw it urgently necessary to call in the aid of some foreign nation, whose labour in repelling their enemies should be gratefully and satisfactorily rewarded.
