Book The Wander Woman s Phrasebook

Download or read book The Wander Woman s Phrasebook written by Alison Owings and published by Untreed Reads. This book was released on 2013-07-21 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Updated for 2013 with new words and phrases! Sometimes you need a phrasebook that does a lot more than just tell you where the bathroom is. If you're a woman in a country where you don't speak the language, you might need more assistance. What if you want to flirt with that really cute waiter in Paris? What if a strange man hits on you in Venice? Maybe you just want to sleep in a hostel in Madrid without worrying that your bag will get stolen. Alison Owings, solo traveler extraordinaire, presents a handy guidebook to key words and phrases in French, Italian and Spanish. In addition to important, everyday phrases to help with finding hotels, currency exchange, dining out and transportation, you'll also find terms from dating to shopping and political discussions to working out. There's something here for every woman on the go. San Francisco Examiner said: "This cheeky, savvy, sexy primer, designed for women but entertaining for all, is not your conventional 'Can I have the check please?' phrasebook. If it were a movie, it would probably get an R rating." And from The New York Times: "For women, here are ways to say scram or stay. A phrasebook for women traveling solo or with other women - whether you're looking for a companion or look to get rid of one." Hilarious and helpful, The Wander Woman's Phrasebook belongs in every woman traveler's carry-on.

Book Wandering Women and Holy Matrons

Download or read book Wandering Women and Holy Matrons written by Leigh Ann Craig and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-03-16 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores women’s experiences of pilgrimage in Latin Christendom between 1300 and 1500 C.E. Later medieval authors harbored grave doubts about women’s mobility; literary images of mobile women commonly accused them of lust, pride, greed, and deceit. Yet real women commonly engaged in pilgrimage in a variety of forms, both physical and spiritual, voluntary and compulsory, and to locations nearby and distant. Acting within both practical and social constraints, such women helped to construct more positive interpretations of their desire to travel and of their experiences as pilgrims. Regardless of how their travel was interpreted, those women who succeeded in becoming pilgrims offer us a rare glimpse of ordinary women taking on extraordinary religious and social authority.

Book excerpt: Governments' decisions usually impact most on the lives of women and people of marginalised genders-yet their stories often go unheard. Wander Women unites tales of different journeys around the world and shines light on the boundaries and constraints-both physical and invisible, political and social-that mould the lives of cis women, trans people and gender-nonconforming individuals. In this moving and reflective book, two journalists draw links between the gendering of migration and the policing of gender; between cities and borders that restrict mobility. Those sharing their stories tell us what it is like to move through the world with a 'threatening' gender identity, the 'wrong' nationality, 'transgressive' politics, or a 'disability'. From the streets of London to the ruins of Syria, from Calais to Russia to Western Sahara, this book gathers voices of all ages-of pioneering activists and artists, matriarchs and mothers, politicians and humanitarians. They paint a picture of structural inequality, in which gender, movement and freedom have long been intertwined. A current of warmth and resilience runs through and connects these extraordinary voices. They offer tales of resistance and determination, in a world that tries to deny many the right to make their own choices.

Book Wonder Woman

    Book Details:
  • Author : Noah Berlatsky
  • Publisher : Rutgers University Press
  • Release : 2017-05-31
  • ISBN : 0813594510
  • Pages : 265 pages

Download or read book Wonder Woman written by Noah Berlatsky and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2017-05-31 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Marston was an unusual man—a psychologist, a soft-porn pulp novelist, more than a bit of a carny, and the (self-declared) inventor of the lie detector. He was also the creator of Wonder Woman, the comic that he used to express two of his greatest passions: feminism and women in bondage. Comics expert Noah Berlatsky takes us on a wild ride through the Wonder Woman comics of the 1940s, vividly illustrating how Marston’s many quirks and contradictions, along with the odd disproportionate composition created by illustrator Harry Peter, produced a comic that was radically ahead of its time in terms of its bold presentation of female power and sexuality. Himself a committed polyamorist, Marston created a universe that was friendly to queer sexualities and lifestyles, from kink to lesbianism to cross-dressing. Written with a deep affection for the fantastically pulpy elements of the early Wonder Woman comics, from invisible jets to giant multi-lunged space kangaroos, the book also reveals how the comic addressed serious, even taboo issues like rape and incest. Wonder Woman: Bondage and Feminism in the Marston/Peter Comics 1941-1948 reveals how illustrator and writer came together to create a unique, visionary work of art, filled with bizarre ambition, revolutionary fervor, and love, far different from the action hero symbol of the feminist movement many of us recall from television.

Book E E Cummings Modernism and the Classics

Download or read book E E Cummings Modernism and the Classics written by J. Alison Rosenblitt and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-22 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a major, ground-breaking study of the modernist E. E. Cummings' engagement with the classics. With his experimental form and syntax, his irreverence, and his rejection of the highbrow, there are probably few current readers who would name Cummings if asked to identify 20th-century Anglophone poets in the Classical tradition. But for most of his life, and even for ten or twenty years after his death, this is how many readers and critics did see Cummings. He specialised in the study of classical literature as an undergraduate at Harvard, and his contemporaries saw him as a 'pagan' poet or a 'Juvenalian' satirist, with an Aristophanic sense of humour. In E.E. Cummings' Modernism and the Classics, Alison Rosenblitt aims to recover for the contemporary reader this lost understanding of Cummings as a classicizing poet. The book also includes an edition of previously unpublished work by Cummings himself, unearthed from archival research. For the first time, the reader has access to the full scope of Cummings' translations from Horace, Homer, and Greek drama, as well as two short pieces of classically-related prose, a short 'Alcaics' and a previously unknown and classicizing parody of T. S. Eliot's The Waste Land. This new work is exciting in its own right and essential to understanding Cummings' development as a poet.
