Book The Carole A Study of a Medieval Dance

Download or read book The Carole A Study of a Medieval Dance written by Robert Mullally and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The carole was the principal social dance in France and England from c. 1100 to c. 1400 and was frequently mentioned in French and English medieval literature. However, it has been widely misunderstood by contributors in recent citations in dictionaries and reference books, both linguistic and musical. The carole was performed by all classes of society - kings and nobles, shepherds and servant girls. It is described as taking place both indoors and outdoors. Its central position in the life of the people is underlined by references not only in what we might call fictional texts, but also in historical (or quasi-historical) writings, in moral treatises and even in a work on astronomy. Dr Robert Mullally's focus is very much on details relevant to the history, choreography and performance of the dance as revealed in the primary sources. This methodology involves attempting to isolate the term carole from other dance terms not only in French, but also in other languages. Mullally's groundbreaking study establishes all the characteristics of this dance: etymological, choreographical, lyrical, musical and iconographical.

Book Malory s Originality

Download or read book Malory s Originality written by R. M. Lumiansky and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2019-12-01 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1964. The book presents a commentary on Le Morte d'Arthur that illuminates Malory's literary aims and techniques. The author brings to bear several hitherto unused source materials on Malory's work and offers new analyses of his authorial purposes. Lumiansky argues that Malory wrote a single unified book rather than eight separate tales. The source of Malory's story is an Old French romance known as the Suite du Merlin. Lumiansky traces Malory's originality through Malory's treatment of the main generic features of the Suite du Merlin.

Book The Book of Kyng Arthur

Download or read book The Book of Kyng Arthur written by Charles Moorman and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-10-21 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with a consideration of Malory's ingenious chronology, this study shows that Malory achieved thematic and structural unity by selecting from the great mass of Arthurian legend three narrative strands—the intrigues of Lancelot and Guinevere, the Grail quest, and the feud between the houses of Lot and Pellinore—using these to illustrate a single theme—the rise, flowering, and downfall of an ideal civilization. This selection and use of diverse materials, Charles Moorman asserts, indicates clearly that Malory set to work with a preconceived plan and that he did achieve his purpose, to write the "haole book of Kyng Arthur."

Book The Libraries of King Henry VIII

Download or read book The Libraries of King Henry VIII written by James P. Carley and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is made up of five volumes of books associated with Henry VIII: one (H1) undertaken by an unnamed Frenchman at Richmond Palace in 1535, the second (H2) part of a general inventory at Westminster Palace in 1542. the third (H3) an account from the King's Printer Thomas Berthelet for the years 1541-43, the fourth (H4) a select list of books in the royal library seen by John Bale c.1548, and finally (H5) book titles extracted from the post-mortem inventories of Henry VIII's palaces. Using the evidence of inventory numbers in surviving books, moreover, it has been possible to recreate a lost list of more than 500 books which were brought to Westminster (primarily from Hampton Court and Greenwich) between 1542 and 1548 and this 'list' has been appended to the Westminster inventory. Although the library at Westminster contained printed books and books deriving from Henry's ancestors, a goodly number were monastic 'loot' and the lists show the sort of material John Leland and others considered worth rescuing. A considerable number of these books have left the royal library during the succeeding centuries and Carley has traced many to their modern locations. The presentation and analysis of the Westminster lists in particular leads to a different picture of the role of Henry VIII as preserver and destroyer of the monastic past than has normally been put forth.
