Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Voyage of the Beagle is the title most commonly given to the book written by Charles Darwin and published in 1839 as his Journal and Remarks, bringing him considerable fame and respect. This was the third volume of The Narrative of the Voyages of H.M. Ships Adventure and Beagle, the other volumes of which were written or edited by the commanders of the ships. Journal and Remarks covers Darwin's part in the second survey expedition of the ship HMS Beagle. Due to the popularity of Darwin's account, the publisher reissued it later in 1839 as Darwin's Journal of Researches, and the revised second edition published in 1845 used this title. A republication of the book in 1905 introduced the title The Voyage of the "Beagle," by which it is now best known. The Beagle sailed from Plymouth Sound on 27 December 1831 under the command of Captain Robert FitzRoy. While the expedition was originally planned to last two years, it lasted almost five-the Beagle did not return until 2 October 1836. Darwin spent most of this time exploring on land (three years and three months on land; 18 months at sea). The book is a vivid and exciting travel memoir as well as a detailed scientific field journal covering biology, geology, and anthropology that demonstrates Darwin's keen powers of observation, written at a time when Western Europeans were exploring and charting the whole world. Although Darwin revisited some areas during the expedition, for clarity the chapters of the book are ordered by reference to places and locations rather than by date. Darwin's notes made during the voyage include comments hinting at his changing views on the fixity of species. On his return, he wrote the book based on these notes, at a time when he was first developing his theories of evolution through common descent and natural selection. The book includes some suggestions of his ideas, particularly in the second edition of 1845.

Download or read book The Voyage of the Beagle Special Edition written by Charles Darwin and published by . This book was released on 2018-06-22 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When HMS Beagle sailed out of Devonport on 27 December 1831, Charles Darwin was twenty-two and setting off on the voyage of a lifetime. His journal, here reprinted in a shortened form, shows a naturalist making patient observations concerning geology, natural history, people, places and events. Volcanoes in the Galapagos, the Gossamer spider of Patagonia and the Australasian coral reefs - all are to be found in these extraordinary writings. The insights made here were to set in motion the intellectual currents that led to the theory of evolution, and the most controversial book of the Victorian age: The Origin of Species. This volume reprints Charles Darwin's journal in a shortened form. In their introduction Janet Brown and Michael Neve provide a background to Darwin's thought and work, and this edition also includes notes, maps, appendices and an essay on scientific geology and the Bible by Robert FitzRoy, Darwin's friend and Captain of the Beagle. Book excerpt: The Voyage of the Beagle by Charles Darwin As important as The Voyage of the Beagle is to the information of the genesis of Darwin's idea of evolution and of an appreciation of his personal struggle for self-discovery, the book's maximum considerable thing is the insight it provides into the Victorian mind. Darwin shared many characteristics with other Victorian intellectuals of his era, amongst them Thomas Carlyle, John Stuart Mill, John Henry Newman, and Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Principally, this generation of the 1830's turned into prompted via a conviction of personal future and a sense of being at the beginning of a new era in which the old approaches of viewing subjects would not practice. With the exception of Newman, they all got here to include a concept of development, both spiritual or social. Darwin observed in nature a reason to claim that there was biological progress. Indeed, he furnished Tennyson, as an example, with metaphoric proof, in his idea of herbal selection, of the poet's very own idea of ethical evolution. The Voyage of the Beagle displays the mixture of zest for adventure and a sense of challenge that identifies Darwin truly along with his age and era. One of the most salient factors of nature, which Darwin confronted with unceasing honesty, in particular in the Galápagos Islands, was that of cruelty. About twenty years after the go back of the Beagle, he wrote, "What a book a devil's chaplain may write on the clumsy, wasteful, blundering, low, and horribly merciless works of nature." In an experience, it is the other facet of the coin of natural choice. If Darwin's idea of evolution pointed to the fashionable development of a species, it additionally revealed the indifference of nature to people in the species. It is exactly Darwin's openness to nature that allowed him to understand this duality, and it was his clinical honesty-which necessitated his acceptance of his remark-that supported the final development of his concept. Both of these attributes are already pondered in Darwin's first book, The Voyage of the Beagle.

Book excerpt: When the Beagle sailed out of Devonport on 27 December 1831, Charles Darwin was twenty-two and setting off on the voyage of a lifetime. It was to last five years and transform him from an amiable and somewhat aimless young man into a scientific celebrity. Even more vitally, it was to set in motion the intellectual currents that culminated in the arrival of The Origin of Species in Victorian drawing-rooms in 1859. His journal is vivid and immediate, showing us a naturalist making patient observations, above all in geology. As well as a profusion of natural history detail, it records many other things that caught Darwin's eye, from civil war in Argentina to the new colonial settlements of Australia.
