Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first few centuries of Islam, Middle Eastern Christians, Muslims, and Jews alike all faced the challenges of preserving their holy texts in the midst of a changing religious landscape. This situation led Syriac, Arabic, and Hebrew scholars to develop new fields of linguistic science in order to better analyse the languages of the Bible and the Qurʾān. Part of this work dealt with the issue of vocalisation in Semitic scripts, which lacked the letters required to precisely record all the vowels in their languages. Semitic scribes thus developed systems of written vocalisation points to better record vowel sounds, first in Syriac, then soon after in Arabic and Hebrew. These new points opened a new field of linguistic analysis, enabling medieval grammarians to more easily examine vowel phonology and explore the relationships between phonetics and orthography. Many aspects of this new field of vocalisation crossed the boundaries between religious communities, first with the spread of ‘relative’ vocalisation systems prior to the eighth century, and later with the terminology created to name the discrete vowels of ‘absolute’ vocalisation systems. This book investigates the theories behind Semitic vocalisation and vowel phonology in the early medieval Middle East, tracing their evolution to identify points of intellectual contact between Syriac, Arabic, and Hebrew linguists before the twelfth century.

Book Studies in Semitic Vocalisation and Reading Traditions

Download or read book Studies in Semitic Vocalisation and Reading Traditions written by Aaron Hornkohl and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 713 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together papers relating to the pronunciation of Semitic languages and the representation of their pronunciation in written form. The papers focus on sources representative of a period that stretches from late antiquity until the Middle Ages. A large proportion of them concern reading traditions of Biblical Hebrew, especially the vocalisation notation systems used to represent them. Also discussed are orthography and the written representation of prosody. Beyond Biblical Hebrew, there are studies concerning Punic, Biblical Aramaic, Syriac, and Arabic, as well as post-biblical traditions of Hebrew such as piyyuṭ and medieval Hebrew poetry. There were many parallels and interactions between these various language traditions and the volume demonstrates that important insights can be gained from such a wide range of perspectives across different historical periods.

Download or read book Arabic Grammar and Qur nic Exegesis in Early Islam written by C. H. M. Versteegh and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1993 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume the author examines the origins of Arabic linguistics on the basis of the earliest Qur nic commentaries (1st half of the 8th century A.D.). The material used includes both edited texts and manuscript commentaries.Various chapters analyze the exegetical methods of the early commentators (such as Muq til and Muh ammad al-Kalb ) and their use of grammatical terminology. These data are compared with the earliest grammatical treatises (Such as S bawayhi and Farr ).The material presented here constitutes an important source of evidence for the development of linguistic thinking in Islam and the origin of the grammatical schools of Basra and Kufa.
