Book The Vital Issues of the War Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Vital Issues of the War Classic Reprint written by Richard Wilson Boynton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Vital Issues of the War The first seven sermons in this volume were preached on successive Sundays in April and May and the eighth in September of the present year. Now that the church seems, in the eyes of many, to have fallen from the high esteem in which it was held by a former generation, no doubt a volume of sermons, even on "The Vital Issues of the War," runs grave risk of not being read. Since the war began, however, sharp criticism has been visited upon the pulpit for evading the discussion of its compelling moral and spiritual problems; it needs, therefore, to be made known that all pulpits, to say the least, have not deserved the reproach of failing to utilize this unique opportunity. So my book goes forth, quite without apology, for what it is - the messages of a preacher to his people in the regular course of his ministry, printed as they were delivered, with only the slight revision desirable for publication. Such utterances inevitably reflect a point of view determined in part by the time at which they were spoken. In this they are in nowise exceptional. Magazine articles, or the chapters of a book, must be finished sometime, and must bear internal evidences of their date of composition. Later impressions, especially of the swiftly-moving panorama of a world-war, would modify certain details. Thus, one could not speak now with as much optimism of the Bolshevik rule in Russia as was possible when Sermon IV was preached last April. Still, I have decided to let the sermon stand, as perhaps an over-sympathetic interpretation of the obscure strivings of the Russian democracy, the final outcome of which is still far from apparent. In such a case, one would rather err by undue generosity than by cold-blooded cynicism, which the sermon was intended to rebuke. It is not for that reason that of these young men are now fighting for the Allies on the Von Hindenberg line. It is not for that reason that thousands more have been succoring the wounded behind the lines in France. It is not for that reason that an American Commission has been devoting its time, its strength and its energy towards succoring enslaved and starving Belgium. Ah! No, my friends, desire for vengeance is not the impelling motive of American action. There is a far deeper cause than that for our sympathy with one side in this great struggle. It is because we realize that upon the battlefields of Europe there is at stake the future of the free institutions of this world. It is because we feel and know that should the tide of that bloody struggle turn against the Allies the cause of democracy - even here in far-off America - would go down with them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War and Our Social Problems T is at a time of strain that we can best con sider the deep-lying tendencies which run through social development, just as it is at a time of national anxiety that we can best discover to what an extent religion still retains its hold on the people. The pleasant ness of peace allures us from year to year to forgetfulness. We are easy and confident. The day brings its work and evening its guerdon of release. Great movements ultimately affecting the social organism are in process, but they operate so slowly that we fail to appreciate them. To-day these movements are visible, for events follow upon events with appalling rapidity. Our nation has entered into a dreadful struggle with high emprise. But so severe is the struggle and so wide 5. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War and the Workers: A Study Guide for the Use of Study Circles, Classes, and Individual Students on Questions Arising Out of the Great European War The aim has been to be as thorough and yet as concise as Of course it is not for a moment contemplated that any group of working men will attempt all the courses here sketched out. Such an attempt would require the lifetime of a professional student. But previous interest or study has made different groups or individuals eager to raise and try to answer certain questions, and we hope that any such may find in this little book suggestions as to how he may set about solving the problem which he desires to raise. We have only con sidered serious students who are ready to take time and trouble. Almost any one of the sections outlined is enough for a three years' course. For, after all, what the war has brought home to us is not so much our need of knowledge in order that we may contribute to a sound public Opinion on the crisis, but rather the vital importance of entire fields of study which hitherto have been to a large extent neglected. I have spoken of our aim but must say in honesty that none of the credit for the labour represented by this book belongs to me but I am glad, as President of the to introduce to our members the product of much wea. Experience and toil. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Vital Forces in Current Events

Download or read book Vital Forces in Current Events written by Morris Edmund Speare and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vital Forces in Current Events: Readings on Present-Day Affairs From Contemporary Leaders and Thinkers In compiling a book of selections to assist in making such work feasible and effective, the editors have sought for articles with four qualities, all of them desirable in material of this sort. Each selection should present a vital issue, a question of real importance to America and the world. Each discussion should deal with fundamental ideas such as are likely to hold good through the changing current of events. An analysis of the style and structure of each article should disclose the best qualities of present-day writing, clearness and interest. And, lastly, so far as possible the student should be brought into stimulating contact with some leader of thought or action today who can speak with the authority of public recognition. The editors have taken advantage of similarity of aim of the two volumes to use considerable material from their World War Issues and Ideals, and wish to express their appreciation of the kindness of the contributors to that volume for the opportunity to use again the material so generously granted them there. Though the field covered by the two books is somewhat different, the general purpose has remained the same - to present contemporary problems and ideals, national and international, as they are seen by men of light and leading today. Book Some Fundamental Issues of the Present War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Some Fundamental Issues of the Present War Classic Reprint written by William Dillon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-26 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Fundamental Issues of the Present War Germany treating of the causes of the War and the merits of the controversy as between the parties to it. Studying this liter ature, one is at once impressed by two facts: one sees very clearly (i) that in such a crisis as this, education, culture and mental train ing, even of the highest kind, count for little or nothing as against strong national sentiment; and (2) that it is almost, if not quite, im possible in such a crisis as this to find a man who can and will judge the issues involved from an absolutely judicial and purely intellectual standpoint. Indeed, it is hardly too much to say that the man who can and will judge in such a way the issues of such a controversy is little short of a monstrosity. All English writers - men of letters, scientists, philosophers almost without exception, are intensely convinced that, in this war, England is morally right and Germany is morally wrong; that it is for the best interests of civilization that the Allies should win; and that the blame for the war and for all the horrors that go with it lies at the door of Germany and not at the door of England. On the other hand, all the highest and most cultured minds in Germany believe with equal intensity the direct opposite of all this. They lay all the blame upon England and Russia and they pray God to defend the right with the most absolute conviction as to where the right lies.
