Book A Darkly Radiant Vision

Download or read book A Darkly Radiant Vision written by Gary Dorrien and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2023-07-25 with total page 629 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third and final volume in the first comprehensive history of Black social Christianity, by the “greatest theological ethicist of the twenty-first century” (Michael Eric Dyson) The Black social gospel is a tradition of unsurpassed and ongoing importance in American life, argues Gary Dorrien in his groundbreaking trilogy on the history of Black social Christianity. This concluding volume, an interpretation of the tradition since the early 1970s, follows Dorrien’s award-winning The New Abolition: W. E. B. Du Bois and the Black Social Gospel and Breaking White Supremacy: Martin Luther King Jr. and the Black Social Gospel. Beginning in the shadow of Martin Luther King Jr., Dorrien examines the past fifty years of this intellectual and activist tradition, interpreting its politics, theology, ethics, social criticism, and social justice organizing. He argues that Black social Christianity is today an intersectional tradition of discourse and activist religion that interrelates liberation theology, womanist theology, antiracist politics, LGBTQ+ theory, cultural criticism, progressive religion, broad-based interfaith organizing, and global solidarity politics. A Darkly Radiant Vision features in-depth discussions of Andrew Young, Jesse Jackson, Samuel DeWitt Proctor, Gayraud Wilmore, James Cone, Cornel West, Katie Geneva Cannon, Stacey Floyd-Thomas, Traci Blackmon, William J. Barber II, Raphael G. Warnock, and many others.

Book National Football League Franchises

Download or read book National Football League Franchises written by Frank P. Jozsa and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2016-07-29 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Football League (NFL) is the most influential, popular, and prosperous professional sports league in America. As such this book focuses on the development and maturity of the organization and its members, but most importantly, how each of them performed in seasons and postseasons and then to what extent they have succeeded as a business enterprise despite competition for market share from other types of entertainment. Each chapter contains two core themes as sections—Team Performances and Franchise Business. The former highlights which and how teams won division and conference titles and championships like Super Bowls while the latter lists and compares financial data including their revenue, gate receipts, and operating income. By linking and comparing the historical performances of NFL teams to financial information about them as business organizations, this book provides a unique contribution to the literature on the sports industry. This book connects franchise popularity and all-time records with recent estimated market value, net worth, and other financial data. In sum, National Football League Franchises explains why particular teams located in large, midsized, or small markets win more games and titles than others. In addition, it provides ways to individually, and by division and/or conference, to compare teams from a financial perspective.

Book Football Revolution

Download or read book Football Revolution written by Bart Wright and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2020-03-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the last twenty-five years, the most dominant offensive strategy in college football has been the spread offense, which relies on empty backfields, lots of receivers and passing, and no huddles between plays. Where the spread offense started, why it took so long to take hold, and the evolution of its many variations are the much-debated mysteries that Bart Wright sets about solving in this book. Football Revolution recovers a key, overlooked, part of the story. The book reveals how Jack Neumeier, a high school football coach in California in the 1970s, built an offensive strategy around a young player named John Elway, whose father was a coach at nearby California State University, Northridge. One of the elder Elway’s assistant coaches, Dennis Erickson, then borrowed Neumeier’s innovations and built on them, bringing what we now know as the spread offense onto the national stage at the University of Miami in the 1980s. With Erickson’s career as a lens, this book shows how the inspiration of a high school coach became the dominant offense in college football, prepping a whole generation of quarterbacks for the NFL and forever changing the way the game is played.

Book Climate Change for Football Fans

Download or read book Climate Change for Football Fans written by James Atkins and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2010-10-30 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate policy hits Turf Moor: race through an unconventional take on climate policy, while following Burnley's adventure in Europe and their roller-coaster struggle for survival in the Premier League. An amusing and enlightening look at climate change and football, this book consists of a series of conversations between Joe, a Burnley lad who is football mad, and Professor Igor who's obsessed with climate change. Joe thinks that worrying about climate change is a waste of time. Igor can't understand why 22 grown men would put on shorts and run around after a ball. Igor agrees to spend a season with Joe going to every Burnley game, and in return Joe and his family listen to the Professor rattle on about climate policy. Written in earthy and irreverent language, Climate Change for Football Fans examines why preventing climate change is so difficult, and explains why it is more a social and political problem than a technological one, and how the need to change our lifestyle makes finding a solution so difficult. Notes at the back of the book summarise all the serious climate-change material so the reader can look up the important messages in the book without having to stand on the terraces. Accessible, informative and fun, Climate Change for Football Fans puts a refreshingly lighthearted spin on a complicated, serious and important issue.

Book The Sounds of Spectators at Football

Download or read book The Sounds of Spectators at Football written by Nicolai Jørgensgaard Graakjær and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2022-12-15 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sounds of spectators at football (soccer) are often highlighted – by spectators, tourists, commentators, journalists, scholars, media producers, etc. – as crucial for the experience of football. These sounds are often said to contribute significantly to the production (at the stadium) and conveyance (in televised broadcast) of 'atmosphere.' This book addresses why and how spectator sounds contribute to the experience of watching in these environments and what characterizes spectator sounds in terms of their structure, distribution and significance. Based on an examination of empirical materials – including the sounds of football matches from the English Premier League as they emerge both at the stadium and in the televised broadcast – this book systematically dissects the sounds of football watching.
