Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book about Medical Ethics, Religion, and Morals, goes from the Clinic of Hippocrates under a Plane Tree on the Greek island of Cos, to the small one-room Cottage Hospital in Capernaum of the Gospel of St Mark, staffed by two fisherman and Christ, to reach the Maudsley Hospital in London and UCLA in California. The book explores the brain - mind interface. Do the Mechanics of Neurology and the Mind of Kindness come from the same or different material? Are they similar or different in essence? The question was asked by Plato in ancient Greece, later by Descartes in France: in the twenty-first century in the ‘Higher Cortical Functions’ of neuropsychologist Alexander Luria in Russia, Adam Zeman ’s ‘Consciousness' in Edinburgh, and by Oliver Sacks in the New York Review of Books. Neurology and Kindness deals with Neurology, Brain, Mind and the innate human quality of Kindness; reinforced by the Love of Christianity, the Charity of Islam, the Duty of Judaism. It is written as a handbook for Nurses, Doctors, and also the Church: all who care for and help the sick.

Book Accidents in History

Download or read book Accidents in History written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-01-29 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is now an extensive literature on the social and environmental consequences of living in the risk society. Studies of trauma are also increasingly prominent. But scant attention has been paid to perceptions of risk and danger in the past — in particular, to the history of accidents and the meanings of the accidental. This collection of interdisciplinary essays addresses this lacuna providing a theoretically informed historical sociology of the accident and risk. It explores the social and cultural contexts in which ‘acts of God', calamities, catastrophes, disasters, injuries, casualties, and other category of ‘mishaps' were experienced, conceptualized and responded to. Drawing on the skills of British, European and North American scholars, Accidents in History combines philosophical, sociological and ecological overviews with in-depth historical case-studies. It spans the period from the eighteenth century to the present, probing the epistemological, social and political roots of the accidental. The authors differentiate between industrial and other forms of injury; trace the origins of the normalization of accidents; and analyze the interactions and gendered discrepancies between domestic and non-domestic mishaps. They also investigate the medicalization of sudden injury, and discuss the emergence of new socio-medical and humanitarian discourses around the organization of relief for victims.

Book The Enlightened Mr Parkinson

Download or read book The Enlightened Mr Parkinson written by Cherry Lewis and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-08-08 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A colorful and absorbing portrait of James Parkinson and the turbulent, intellectually vibrant world of Georgian London. Parkinson’s disease is one of the most common forms of dementia, with 60,000 new cases each year in the United States alone, yet few know anything about the man the disease is named after. In 1817—two hundred years years ago—James Parkinson (1755–1824) defined this mysterious ailment so precisely that we still diagnose Parkinson's Disease today by recognizing the symptoms he identified. The story of this remarkable man’s contributions to the Age of the Enlightenment is told through his three seemingly disparate passions: medicine, politics and fossils. As a political radical, Parkinson was interrogated over a plot to kill King George III and was in danger of exile. But simultaneously, he was helping Edward Jenner set up smallpox vaccination stations across London and writing the first scientific study of fossils in English, jump-starting a national craze. He is one of the intellectual pioneers of "the age of wonder," forgotten to history, but Cherry Lewis restores this amazing man to his rightful place in history with her evocative portrait of the man and his era.

Book The Genius of Erasmus Darwin

Download or read book The Genius of Erasmus Darwin written by Christopher Upham Murray Smith and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2005 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Genius of Erasmus Darwin provides insight into the full extent of Erasmus Darwin's exceptional intellect. He is shown to be a major creative thinker and innovator, one of the minds behind the late eighteenth-century industrial revolution, and one of the first, if not the first, to perceive the living world (including humans) as part of a unified evolutionary scenario. The contributions here provide contextual understandings of Erasmus Darwin's thought, as well as studies of particular works and accounts of the later reception of his writings. In this way it is possible to see why the young Samuel Taylor Coleridge was moved to describe Darwin as 'the first literary character in Europe, and the most original-minded man'.Erasmus Darwin, Charles Darwin's grandfather, was one of the leading intellectuals of eighteenth-century England. He was a man with an extraordinary range of interests and activities: he was a doctor, biologist, inventor, poet, linguist and botanist. He was also a founding member of the Lunar Society, an intellectual community that included such eminent men as James Watt and Josiah Wedgwood.
