Book The Village of Lansing and its airport Past Present Future

Download or read book The Village of Lansing and its airport Past Present Future written by Robert R. Malkas and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2023-05-10 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book The Village of Lansing and Its Airport is a history of how the Lansing Airport was developed into what it is today. This story looks at the fascinating and often underappreciated ways that it served the people of the Village of Lansing and the entire Chicago Southland. While the book tells the history of events in the airport’s development, it also provides a guided virtual tour through the pages of history and gives the reader an opportunity to participate as if they were actually reliving the experiences. The book is designed to revitalize the planned development of the airport in a format not typical of a historical memoir. About the Author Robert R. Malkas currently resides in Lansing, Illinois. When he first moved there, he went to sleep every night under the first ever airport rotating beacon atop Henry Ford’s Hangar at the Chicago Hammond airport. He came to believe he was being sent a message from Henry Ford himself about his contributions to the history of aviation in the United States. Malkas accepted this challenge and became the first chairman of a village commission assigned the task of managing the Lansing Airport’s growth. He was later appointed airport manager and served in that position for twenty-three years until his retirement in 2008.

Book Legendary Locals of Lansing

Download or read book Legendary Locals of Lansing written by Carrie Steinweg and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lansing was settled in the 1840s by German and Dutch immigrants. Farming, then the railroad, played major roles in the growth of the village. The brickyards left a lasting impact on the community, as did Henry Ford's airport hangar, which still stands today. The schools produced figures who have become well known outside Lansing, such as Major League Baseball outfielder Curtis Granderson, who has won a Silver Slugger award and joined baseball's elite 20-20-20-20 club. The community has been blessed with caring and dedicated educators like Hal Gronewald and Durward Shuetz, whose reach extended beyond the classroom. Lansing has also raised war heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country--men like August Olsen and Philip Martini. Many other heroes have served and protected at home, including Kenneth Novak Jr., Lansing's only police officer to die in the line of duty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lansing, Illinois, is a village that is "proud of its past, confident in its future," according to the signs at its entrance. That proud past began in the 1840s, when Dutch and German settlers first made their way to the area. The town was named for Henry Lansing, who came to the area in 1846 with his brothers, John and George. Through the medium of historic photographs, this book captures the evolution of the people of Lansing, from the late-1800s to the present day. These pages bring to life the people, events, communities, and industries that helped to shape and transform Lansing. With nearly 200 vintage images, Lansing, Illinois, includes photographs of the Indiana Avenue School, the Brickyards, the Ford Airport, and early businesses and business owners. It is hard to imagine Ridge Road, now a bustling center of commerce, as a dirt road scattered with general stores, taverns, and blacksmith shops. This book will take you back to Lansing's simpler days to give the reader a glimpse of why this community has maintained its appeal and held generations of families here in this warm and friendly place.

Book The Encyclopedia of New York State

Download or read book The Encyclopedia of New York State written by Peter Eisenstadt and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2005-05-19 with total page 1960 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Encyclopedia of New York State is one of the most complete works on the Empire State to be published in a half-century. In nearly 2,000 pages and 4,000 signed entries, this single volume captures the impressive complexity of New York State as a historic crossroads of people and ideas, as a cradle of abolitionism and feminism, and as an apex of modern urban, suburban, and rural life. The Encyclopedia is packed with fascinating details from fields ranging from sociology and geography to history. Did you know that Manhattan's Lower East Side was once the most populated neighborhood in the world, but Hamilton County in the Adirondacks is the least densely populated county east of the Mississippi; New York is the only state to border both the Great Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean; the Erie Canal opened New York City to rich farmland upstate . . . and to the west. Entries by experts chronicle New York's varied areas, politics, and persuasions with a cornucopia of subjects from environmentalism to higher education to railroads, weaving the state's diverse regions and peoples into one idea of New York State. Lavishly illustrated with 500 photographs and figures, 120 maps, and 140 tables, the Encyclopedia is key to understanding the state's past, present, and future. It is a crucial reference for students, teachers, historians, and business people, for New Yorkers of all persuasions, and for anyone interested in finding out more about New York State.

Book Language and Identity in the Arab World

Download or read book Language and Identity in the Arab World written by Fathiya Al Rashdi and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-09-05 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language and Identity in the Arab World explores the inextricable link between language and identity, referring particularly to the Arab world. Spanning Indonesia to the United States, the Arab world is here imagined as a continually changing one, with the Arab diaspora asserting its linguistic identity across the world. Crucial questions on transforming linguistic landscapes, the role and implications of migration, and the impact of technology on language use are explored by established and emerging scholars in the field of applied and socio-linguistics. The book asks such crucial questions as how language contact affects or transforms identity, how language reflects changing identities among migrant communities, and how language choices contribute to identity construction in social media. As well as appreciating the breadth and scope of the Arab world, this anthology focuses on the transformative role of language within indigenous and migrant communities as they negotiate between their heritage languages and those spoken by the wider society. Investigating the ways in which identity continues to be imagined and re-constructed in and among Arab communities, this book is indispensable to students, teachers, and anyone who is interested in language contact, linguistic landscapes, and minority language retention as well as the intersections of language and technology.

Book Lost Airports of Chicago

Download or read book Lost Airports of Chicago written by Nicholas C. Selig and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02-12 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To book a ride on the "World's Shortest Airline" or learn aerial stunts from the redheaded widow of Lawrence Avenue, you've got to go through the airports buried beneath the housing developments and shopping malls of Chicagoland. Many of these airports sprang up after World War I, when training killed more pilots than combat, and the aviation pioneers who developed Chicago's flying fields played a critical role in getting the nation ready to dare the skies in World War II. Author Nick Selig has rolled wheels on his fair share of Chicago's landing strips but faces an entirely new challenge in touching down in places being swallowed by a city and forgotten by history.
