Book excerpt: Magic and transformation in the beauty of a Ukrainian village For seven-year-old Angela, happiness is exploring the verdant countryside around her home in western Ukraine. Her imagination carries her into the spirits of passing birds, into the breath of the wind, into the leaves of her springtime garden. Everything changes when, one morning, she spies her mother crying. As she tries to find out what lies behind the sadness, she is drawn on an extraordinary journey into the secrets of her family, and her parent’s fateful choices. Can Angela lead her mother back to happiness before her innocence is destroyed by the shadows of a dark past? Beautiful, poetic and richly sensory, this is a tale that will haunt and lift its readers. Book excerpt: The Land Under: Seeing the Forest Through the Trees is a charming middle-grade adventure story about a boys journey to an underground kingdom of talking animals. Unhappy because of his parents financial difficulties, thirteen-year-old Frank finds himself summoned to the Land Under, a place that parallels our world but is only for animals. Fallen trees linked to forests aboveground are damming up the mighty waterfall, Naveah, which powers the rivers that keep the three kingdoms of the underground civilization separated. If Frank doesnt find a way to unblock the waterfall, the northern forest kingdom will be overrun by savage animals from the jungle and safari kingdoms. Its a race against time, the elements, and the balance of nature for an average boy with an extraordinary mission. Like a fairy tale in its intuitive simplicity, The Land Under grows before your eyes into a completely detailed world that feels so ordinary and real that it almost doesnt seem to be fantasy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From “the adventure ambassadors our current generation of cotton-wood kids urgently need,” an outdoor activity guide to keep kids happy and healthy (Daily Telegraph). Adventure is out there—you just have to go and find it! Childhood obesity is increasing year on year. Happiness and well-being levels in children are on the decline too. Children spend less time outside and more time in front of screens: computers, phones, games, television. 100 Family Adventures provides a valuable resource bank of tried and tested outdoor activities to enjoy with children, swapping “screen time” for “green time.” Particularly inspiring for people who want to get started, but don’t know how, the book shows how any family can enjoy time together outdoors. Activities are grouped into themes: Woodland, Water, Close to Home, Hills and Mountains, Exploring, By the Sea, Extreme Weather. Within each section is a range in difficulty, from making a rope swing to scrambling up a stream, from spending a day without electricity to going on a charity bike ride, from exploring a rockpool to camping on an uninhabited island. Packed with inspiring photos, sensible but enthusiastic instructions from parents Tim and Kerry combine with remarks and advice (and jokes!) from children Amy and Ella.

Download or read book The Pundits written by Derek J. Waller and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2004-11-19 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a September day in 1863, Abdul Hamid entered the Central Asian city of Yarkand. Disguised as a merchant, Hamid was actually an employee of the Survey of India, carrying concealed instruments to enable him to map the geography of the area. Hamid did not live to provide a first-hand count of his travels. Nevertheless, he was the advance guard of an elite group of Indian trans-Himalayan explorers -- recruited, trained, and directed by the officers of the Great Trigonometrical Survey of India -- who were to traverse much of Tibet and Central Asia during the next thirty years. Derek Waller presents the history of these explorers, who came to be called "native explorers" or "pundits" in the public documents of the Survey of India. In the closed files of the government of British India, however, they were given their true designation as spies. As they moved northward within the Indian subcontinent, the British demanded precise frontiers and sought orderly political and economic relationships with their neighbors. They were also becoming increasingly aware of and concerned with their ignorance of the geographical, political, and military complexion of the territories beyond the mountain frontiers of the Indian empire. This was particularly true of Tibet. Though use of pundits was phased out in the 1890s in favor of purely British expeditions, they gathered an immense amount of information on the topography of the region, the customs of its inhabitants, and the nature of its government and military resources. They were able to travel to places where virtually no European count venture, and did so under conditions of extreme deprivation and great danger. They are responsible for documenting an area of over one million square miles, most of it completely unknown territory to the West. Now, thanks to Waller's efforts, their contributions to history will no longer remain forgotten.
