Download or read book The Vietnam War Day by Day written by Leo Daugherty and published by Chartwell Books. This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hardcover reference titles in the Day by Day series examine the evolution of conflicts and wars in a chronological timeline, from the first skirmish to the last battle—and everything in between. These books are a historical companion to each major war in the nineteenth and twentieth century. The fate of soldiers, battalions, armies, can change in the blink of an eye—with this comprehensive book readers can follow the conflicting sides in their strategy, weaponry, and policies. This chronological approach to the conflict allows the reader to see at a glance the key operations on land, at sea, and in the air. The individual stories of events during the war appear as separate articles written as lively newspaper accounts, using the terminology and phrases used in the war, such as "Charlie", search and destroy, and body counts. In this way the reader is able to relive the ebb and flow of the war, while the contemporary images complement the entries and bring this unique conflict to life. In addition, the full color maps allow the reader to follow the course of the campaigns and battles with ease. This book also contains boxes on specific aspects of the war, such as strategy and tactics, decisive weapons, and regional politics. The authoritative text is complemented by over 400 photographs that illuminate one of the most long running and tragic conflicts of the twentieth century.

The book delves into the Vietnam combat soldier’s experience, from the decision to join the army, life in training and combat, and readjusting to civilian life with memories of war. By utilizing letters, oral histories, and memoirs of actual veterans, Kyle Longley and Jacqueline Whitt offer a powerful insight into the minds and lives of the 870,000 "grunts" who endured the controversial war. Book Charley Horse

    Book Details:
  • Author : Richard Macauley
  • Publisher : Outskirts Press
  • Release : 2011-11
  • ISBN : 9781432773748
  • Pages : 724 pages

Download or read book Charley Horse written by Richard Macauley and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2011-11 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CHARLEY HORSE is a 'must read' for anyone who was somehow deeply moved by the Vietnam War era, intrigued by Air Cavalry and helicopters, or fascinated by that magical process that bonds brothers-in-arms. A charley horse is a recurring, shooting pain, strain, or soreness (as opposed to our Charlie Horse unit call sign, with an "i"). This documented tour-of-duty journey took place amidst the Haight-Ashbury swirl of overdosed rock stars, desegregation hatred, Kent State shoot-outs, Pentagon Papers, Nixon Tapes, The Pill, and a host of back-in-the-world newspaper headlines that are used to introduce each article...sounding just like today's news headlines. Arranged into 52 chapters, one for each week of the standard 'hitch' or tour of duty, this compiled collection of the author's War Correspondences documents much more than the war itself. In this perspective, Mr. Macauley describes the Vietnam War from July 29, 1970 through July 27, 1971 through Warren 'Bud' McCoy's eyes - more as a contiguous process than as a series of random happenings. Rather than a narrow slice, this process takes the reader through the experience of being a 'new guy' through the g r o w t h into 'old guy', but it also chronicles the expanded military 'community' with whom they interacted, such as Naval Air fastmovers, River Rats, the Hospital Ship Sanctuary, and ship artillery; Army Intelligence, Special Forces, Corps of Engineers, 18th Surgical Hospital, and arty; Air Force fastmovers, Forward Air Controllers, and satellite analysis; Marine Corps Recon and Snipers; plus the nearby ROC detachment's recon and special interdictions (Republic of Korea). Finally, a lavender stationery thread runs through this dynamic fabric: the author's sweetheart provided her own daily documentation of her concurrent pregnancy and era angst with her correspondence -- snippets of which formed the airfield's treasured Lynne-O-Grams (un-jaded, literary, common-sensible, poetic, and comedic relief that were anxiously awaited Lotus blossoms springing forth from the oftimes macabre mess. This is about people and what they did because of, and in spite of, the Vietnam War - an irreverent, humanistic time capsule that chronicles the C Troopers -- a cast of zany characters in their mutual fling together on the lunatic fringe.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vietnam War (Vietnamese: Chiến Tranh Việt Nam), also known as the Second Indochina War, was a conflict in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia from 1 November 1955 to the fall of Saigon on 30 April 1975.[8] It was the second of the Indochina Wars and was officially fought between North Vietnam and South Vietnam. North Vietnam was supported by the Soviet Union, China, and other communist allies; South Vietnam was supported by the United States, South Korea, the Philippines, Australia, Thailand, and other anti-communist allies. The war, considered a Cold War-era proxy war by some, lasted 19 years, with direct U.S. involvement ending in 1973, and included the Laotian Civil War and the Cambodian Civil War, which ended with all three countries becoming communist in 1975. This honestly-written book takes the reader on a young Marine lieutenant's journey as he assumes command of a Marine infantry platoon in Vietnam. Starting with his arrival in June 1967, until his reassignment to the Marine Advisory Unit in November 1967, the reader will experience Vietnam at the platoon and company levels and get an idea of combat operations in I Corps near ConThien, Dong Ha, and south of the Demilitarized Zone. Although depicting danger, fear, fatigue, and death, this book is not a sensational account of combat. Rather it is the author's best recollection of the day-to-day reality of living in combat. His story is not unique or special, but it is authentic and true.
