Book The Victoria and Sidney Railway 1892 1919

Download or read book The Victoria and Sidney Railway 1892 1919 written by Darryl E. Muralt and published by B.C. Railway Historical Association. This book was released on 1992 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It began as part of a dream-a dream to directly connect lower Vancouver Island to the transcontinental lines by rail and ferry. The V&S Railway, a pioneer shortline built in the late 1800s, was in continuous (and expanding) use from 1892 to 1919. It never aggregated more than sixteen miles, but was critically important to those it served. This is a story of great expectations, shrewd business, and political dealing.

Book On the Street where You Live Victoria s early roads and railways

Download or read book On the Street where You Live Victoria s early roads and railways written by Danda Humphreys and published by Heritage House Publishing Co. This book was released on 2000 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the mid-1800s, Victoria grew from a fur-trading post into a provincial capital--the jewel in British Columbia's golden crown. Meanwhile, many of the early residents, happy to leave the Hudson's Bay Company behind, followed simple trails from the fort or discovered new routes of their own. In her first book, Danda Humphreys introduced readers to some of the people who forged those pioneer pathways. Now she takes us another step back in time to the roads and railways that connected the original city's core to today's suburbs. From Saanich to Sooke, street names tell stories of intrigue and adventure: Rowland Avenue, named for the farm labourer with a sinister sideline: hangman for the HBC. Joan Crescent, where coal baron Robert Dunsmuir's widow once resided in solitary splendour in a castle called Craigdarroch. Sidney Avenue, close to where the Brethour brothers donated land for the northern terminus of the "Cordwood Express," first train to link the city with the Saanich Peninsula and the islands in the Strait of Georgia. In this second book in her On the Street Where You Live trilogy, Danda once again combines her passion for the past with a penchant for lively prose to bring you stories about Victoria's pioneers. You know the streets; now meet the people--their lives, their loves and the legends they left behind.

Book Rides on Railways

Download or read book Rides on Railways written by Samuel Sidney and published by . This book was released on 2008-12-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Sidney (1813-1883) was a British author, journalist and editor. He studied and briefly practised law, but abandoned it and turned to journalism. His interest in agriculture led him to visit and write about many agricultural exhibitions. Due to the influence of his younger brother John, he became interested in Australia and they cowrote the Australian Hand-Book in 1848. It's success led the brothers to begin a weekly journal; Sidney's Emigrant's Journal (1848-1849) which then became a monthly, Sidney's Emigrant's Journal and Traveller's Magazine (1849-50), which was edited by Samuel. Other works include: Bristol: A Free Port (1845), Gauge Evidence: The History and Prospects of the Railway System (1846), Speed on Railways Considered in a Commercial Point of View (1847), A Voice From the Far Interior of Australia (written as A Bushman) (1847), Commercial Consequences of a Mixed Gauge on Our Railway System (1848), Railways and Agriculture in North Lincolnshire (1848), Rides on Railways (1851), The Three Colonies of Australia (1852), Gallops and Gossips in the Bush of Australia (1854) and Book of the Horse (1873).
