Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revealing a vibrant and intertwined artistic scene in the Balkans On the Very Edge brings together fourteen empirical and comparative essays about the production, perception, and reception of modernity and modernism in the visual arts, architecture, and literature of interwar Serbia (1918–1941). The contributions highlight some idiosyncratic features of modernist processes in this complex period in Serbian arts and society, which emerged ‘on the very edge’ between territorial and cultural, new and old, modern and traditional identities. With an open methodological framework this book reveals a vibrant and intertwined artistic scene, which, albeit prematurely, announced interests in pluralism and globalism. On the Very Edge addresses issues of artistic identities and cultural geographies and aims to enrich contextualized studies of modernism and its variants in the Balkans and Europe, while simultaneously re-mapping and adjusting the prevailing historical canon. Contributors Jelena Bogdanović (Iowa State University), Lilien Filipovitch Robinson (George Washington University), Igor Marjanović (Washington University in St. Louis), Miloš R. Perović (University of Belgrade), Jasna Jovanov (The Pavle Beljanski Memorial Collection and University EDUCONS, Novi Sad), Svetlana Tomić (Alfa University, Belgrade), Ljubomir Milanović (Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts), Bojana Popović (Museum of Applied Art in Belgrade), Anna Novakov (Saint Mary’s College of California), Aleksandar Kadijević (University of Belgrade), Tadija Stefanović (University of Belgrade), Dragana Ćorović (University of Belgrade), Viktorija Kamilić (independent scholar), Marina Djurdjević (Museum of Science and Technology, Belgrade), Nebojša Stanković (Princeton University), Dejan Zec (Institute for Recent History of Serbia)

  • Pages : 299 pages

Download or read book Beau Monde on Empire s Edge written by Mayhill C. Fowler and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2017-05-08 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Beau Monde on Empire’s Edge, Mayhill C. Fowler tells the story of the rise and fall of a group of men who created culture both Soviet and Ukrainian. This collective biography showcases new aspects of the politics of cultural production in the Soviet Union by focusing on theater and on the multi-ethnic borderlands. Unlike their contemporaries in Moscow or Leningrad, these artists from the regions have been all but forgotten despite the quality of their art. Beau Monde restores the periphery to the center of Soviet culture. Sources in Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, and Yiddish highlight the important multi-ethnic context and the challenges inherent in constructing Ukrainian culture in a place of Ukrainians, Russians, Poles, and Jews. Beau Monde on Empire’s Edge traces the growing overlap between the arts and the state in the early Soviet years, and explains the intertwining of politics and culture in the region today.

Book The Human Edge

Download or read book The Human Edge written by Greg Orme and published by Pearson UK. This book was released on 2019-11-15 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world is spinning so fast it’s difficult to keep up. Two hundred and fifty years ago the Industrial Revolution replaced our arms and legs at work. The fourth Industrial Revolution is now replacing our brains. This technological shift is engulfing organisations and people. It’s challenging the very essence of what it means to be human. Daily news headlines pose existential questions that used to belong in the pages of science fiction: Will a machine take my job? Are we becoming cyborgs? What happens when super computers become self-aware? If we can’t compete with artificial intelligence, what’s left? Innovation guru Greg Orme provides a helpful, funny and supportive shove in the right direction. He explores the skills you need to survive and thrive in a world of artificial intelligence. He urges you to stop competing, and instead do things machines can’t. To become a more human, human. This is a practical toolkit to master three intrinsically human ‘super powers’: 1. To ignite your innate CURIOSITY in a world of accelerating change... 2. To rediscover your CREATIVITY to produce an avalanche of game-changing ideas... 3. To develop CONNECTIVITY to kindle the passion, persistence and insights to successfully engage fellow humans to turn human creativity into business innovation. These career-enhancing capabilities have been identified in Orme’s work with business managers and organisations across the globe. They draw upon the latest psychological and neuroscience research, the unique philosophies of successful entrepreneurs, the practises of the world’s most innovative companies, as well as the habits of great artists, designers and scientists. Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs return to New York City to confront a killer terrorizing couples at their happiest--and most vulnerable. In the early hours of a quiet, weekend morning in Manhattan's Diamond District, a brutal triple murder shocks the city. Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs quickly take the case. Curiously, the killer has left behind a half-million dollars' worth of gems at the murder scene, a jewelry store on 47th street. As more crimes follow, it becomes clear that the killer's target is not gems, but engaged couples themselves. The Promisor vows to take the lives of men and women during their most precious moments--midway through the purchase of an engagement ring, after a meeting with a wedding planner, trying on the perfect gown for a day that will never come. The Promisor arrives silently, armed with knife or gun, and a time of bliss is transformed, in an instant, to one of horror. Soon the Promiser makes a dangerous mistake: leaving behind an innocent witness, Vimal Lahori, a talented young diamond cutter, who can help Rhyme and Sachs blow the lid off the case. They must track down Vimal before the killer can correct his fatal error. Then disaster strikes, threatening to tear apart the very fabric of the city--and providing the perfect cover for the killer to slip through the cracks.

Book excerpt: A prequel to the scorching paranormal romance, The Boss. Maddie Thompson’s life just fell down a rabbit hole. Finding out she's a dragon shifter was one thing—she never quite fit into the human world, and this new reality feels...strangely right. However, discovering the next step is to choose a mate, and if she chooses wrong she'll die, is the other side of crazy. Especially when she already left a piece of her heart with someone who didn't want it. To say dragon enforcer Fallon Conleth was shocked when the Mating Council summoned him as a potential mate for a newly found dragon doesn’t quite cover it. A mate is rare and precious and many dragons never find theirs. Fallon isn’t sure he’s worthy of the honor, not when so many deserve it more. He’ll just go through the motions and return home alone...until he sees Maddie. The human woman he reluctantly let walk away. Fallon already broke Maddie's heart once, but if he can't convince her that they're meant to be, she'll die... and he won't be far behind. Each book in the Fire's Edge series is STANDALONE: * The Mate (prequel) * The Boss * The Rookie * The Enforcer * The Protector
