Book excerpt: Friends of the Verde River will publish a 32-page hardcover children's picture book, written by Arizonan Phoebe Fox and illustrated by Jim Fox, for children aged two to eight and their parents. Through this book, we will engage young families in the protection of the Verde River, one of the nation's treasures and Arizona's longest continuously flowing river. Educating the public about the vital necessity of the Verde River is imperative to keeping the river flowing. By publishing this book and making it available to pre-schools and libraries, doing readings, and offering it for sale, there will be ongoing education about the Verde River to an audience that is not often engaged by our work. Most of the financial supporters of Friends of the Verde River are in an older demographic. By offering an entertaining and educational vehicle that appeals to young families, Friends will connect with a younger demographic who may have been drawn to the river for recreation but be unaware of the animals that depend upon the river for their food and shelter and the plants that provide habitat.

Book Verde River Recreation Guide

Download or read book Verde River Recreation Guide written by Jim Slingluff and published by Golden West Publishers (AZ). This book was released on 1990 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Verde River Recreation Guide differs from most guide books in that it is not just a factual description of the Verde and its tributaries. I tell stories, also. Stories which are designed to give you an intuitive feel for the water-shed, even if you never actually travel any of these waterways. I have personally paddled a canoe down the entire perennial portion of the Verde and significant sections of its major tributaries. I've canoed the Verde and its tributaries in all seasons and at a wide variety of water flow. I have also hiked many of the tributaries. I have had a great deal of pleasure discovering some of the special secrets of the Verde watershed and I?m going to present you with that same opportunity. The Verde watershed offers incredible variety and beauty. We are fortunate to have it. Enjoy it! Take care of it! --

Book excerpt: Archaeologists discovered that the Hohokam were an advanced native tribe who built elaborate irrigation systems along the Verde River, and then disappeared. Early Arizona settlers recognized the tenacity and intelligence of the Hohokam and began to reconstruct their canal system. In 1903, the Salt River Project commenced, and the first lake on the lower Verde River was formed with the completion of the Bartlett Dam in 1939. Seven years later and 12 miles upstream from Bartlett, the Horseshoe Reservoir was created in order to expand copper mining during World War II. The astonishing result of these reservoirs is today's sprawling desert megalopolis of Phoenix, Arizona. Nicknamed "The River of Time," the Verde River is a timeline of Arizona history, and it is essential to human life and livelihood in the area.

Download or read book Verde Valley written by William L. Cowan and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book celebrates the colorful history of the Verde Valley from its prehistoric settlements to the Arizona State Centennial Celebration in 2012. Located in the heart of Arizona, between the Sonoran Desert and the mountain highlands of the Colorado Plateau, the Verde Valley has been a pleasant refuge for man and beast for thousands of years. In a land known for its lack of water, the Verde River and its tributaries--Clear Creek, Beaver Creek, Oak Creek, and Sycamore Creek--have attracted prehistoric people and American pioneers alike. This book will illustrate the history of the "Verde" from the ruins of the lost civilization to the first Anglo farming efforts along Clear Creek and the military presence at Camp Verde. It will illustrate the settlements at Middle Verde and along Beaver Creek, Rimrock, Oak Creek, Cornville, and Sedona. Finally, it will visit the settlement near the Cottonwoods, the exploitation of the Billion Dollar Copper Camp at Jerome, the smoke-belching furnaces of the smelters, and the elegant architecture of the planned company town of Clarkdale.

  • Author : BJ Cummings
  • Publisher : University of Washington Press
  • Release : 2020-07-15
  • ISBN : 0295747447

Download or read book The River That Made Seattle written by BJ Cummings and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2020-07-15 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With bountiful salmon and fertile plains, the Duwamish River has drawn people to its shores over the centuries for trading, transport, and sustenance. Chief Se’alth and his allies fished and lived in villages here and white settlers established their first settlements nearby. Industrialists later straightened the river’s natural turns and built factories on its banks, floating in raw materials and shipping out airplane parts, cement, and steel. Unfortunately, the very utility of the river has been its undoing, as decades of dumping led to the river being declared a Superfund cleanup site. Using previously unpublished accounts by Indigenous people and settlers, BJ Cummings’s compelling narrative restores the Duwamish River to its central place in Seattle and Pacific Northwest history. Writing from the perspective of environmental justice—and herself a key figure in river restoration efforts—Cummings vividly portrays the people and conflicts that shaped the region’s culture and natural environment. She conducted research with members of the Duwamish Tribe, with whom she has long worked as an advocate. Cummings shares the river’s story as a call for action in aligning decisions about the river and its future with values of collaboration, respect, and justice.
