Book excerpt: Excerpt from Venetian Painting in America the Fifteenth Century For the last few years it has been the painters of Venice, and Giovanni Bellini in particular, that have preoccupied my leisure and occupied my working hours. I thought of making a book about him, and I may still do it. But should I fail to achieve this pur pose the student will be able to gather from this book, supplemented by certain essays in my third series of Study and Criticism of Italian Art, most of what I have to contribute to the subject. He will see whatworks I would ascribe to the great artist, in what chron ological order I would arrange them, how I would reconstruct the whole of the master's career, and how I would relate him to his contemporaries. Book excerpt: The Venetian School of Painting by Evelyn March Phillipps CHAPTER I VENICE AND HER ART Venetian painting in its prime differs altogether in character from that of every other part of Italy. The Venetian is the most marked and recognisable of all the schools; its singularity is such that a novice in art can easily, in a miscellaneous collection, sort out the works belonging to it, and added to this unique character is the position it occupies in the domain of art. Venice alone of Italian States can boast an epoch of art comparable in originality and splendour to that of her great Florentine rival; an epoch which is to be classed among the great art manifestations of the world, which has exerted, and continues to exert, incalculable power over painting, and which is the inspiration as well as the despair of those who try to master its secret. The other schools of Italy, with all their superficial varieties of treatment and feeling, depended for their very life upon the extent to which they were able to imbibe the Florentine influence. Siena rejected that strength and perished; Venice bided her time and suddenly struck out on independent lines, achieving a magnificent victory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Masters in Art: Palma Vecchio; Venetian School For only two of Palma's paintings do we possess approximate dates. It is known that in 1520 he was commissioned by Marin Querini to paint an altar piece for the Church of Sant' Antonio in Venice, of which only a portion has been preserved and is now in the Giovanelli Palace, Venice; and that in 1525 he agreed to paint for a lady of the Malipero family an altar-piece represent ing 'the Adoration of the Magi, ' to decorate the island-church of Sant' Elena. This work, now in the Brera Gallery, Milan, was left unfinished at his death and was completed by a pupil - probably Cariani. On July 28, I528, Palma made his will. As he was unmarried the greater part of his fortune was bequeathed to two nephews and a niece, the children of his brother Bartolommeo, who had died four years previously. Twenty ducats were to be distributed among his poor relatives in the territory of Ber gamo and in Venice, and, by the painter's desire, prayers were to be said for his soul in the Sanctuary of Assisi. The witnesses to this will were three coun trymen of Palma's - Marcus Bayeto, a wine-seller, Zuan da Sant' Angelo, a fruiterer, and Fantin di Girardo, a dyer. From the manner in which the painter speaks of himself in this document it has been surmised that for some time he had been in feeble health; whether this was so, or whether his last sick ness was of short duration, it is recorded that he died only two days after sign ing his will, leaving in his studio over forty pictures to be finished by his pupils. He was buried in the vault of the Confraternity of the Holy Spirit, of which he had been a member, in the Church of San Gregorio, Venice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Venetian School of Painting Many visits to Venice have brought home to me the fact that there exists, in English at least, no work which deals as a whole with the Venetian School and its masters. Biographical catalogues there are in plenty, but these, though useful for reference, say little to readers who are not already acquainted with the painters whose career and works are briefly recorded."Lives" of individual masters abound, but however excellent and essential these may be to an advanced study of the school, the volumes containing them make too large a library to be easily carried about, and a great deal of reading and assimilation is required to set each painter in his place in the long story. Book Venice and Its Art Classic Reprint

Download or read book Venice and Its Art Classic Reprint written by Harry Huntington Powers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-23 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Venice and Its Art The present work is in a sense the continuation of an undertaking which began with the publication of the Art Of Florence in 1912. It was intended from the be ginning to cover briefly the art Of the Italian Renaissance in two volumes, a plan now tardily realized after many and prolonged interruptions. The present volume differs from its predecessor in that more attention is given to the city itself, to its history as a key to the understand ing Of its art and to its own growth and physical trans formation as a work Of art in itself. This is in line with the growing feeling Of the writer that art is an expression of the spiritual and cultural life of a people and that their history is the key to its interpretation. The purpose of the book will be Clear to those who are familiar with the earlier volume or with the author's work in the galleries Of Europe. The book is not a record Of personal research. N O archives have been ransacked, no records discovered, no manuscripts edited or read. Information regarding the works here dis cussed is to be found in any good library. Nor has any attempt been made to make the list Of works inclusive or to give all known facts regarding them. The works considered have been chosen as being representative of the artists in question and illustrative of the characteristics discussed. Book The Dutch School of Painting Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Dutch School of Painting Classic Reprint written by Henry Havard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dutch School of Painting The artistic energy of a great nation is not a mere accident, of which we can neither determine the cause nor foresee the result. It is, on the contrary, the resultant of the genius and character of the people the reflection of the social conditions under which it was called into being; and the product of the civilisation to which it owes its birth. All the force and activity of a race appear to be concentrated in its Art; enterprise aids its growth; appreciation ensures its development; and as Art is always grandest when national prosperity is at its height, so it is pre-eminently by its Art that we can estimate the capabilities of a people.
