Download or read book A Place to Hang the Moon written by Kate Albus and published by Holiday House. This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A heartwarming story about three siblings, evacuated from London to live in the countryside, looking for a permanent home--and a new meaning for family. A New York Public Library Best Book of the Year It is 1940 and William, 12, Edmund, 11, and Anna, 9, aren't terribly upset by the death of the not-so-grandmotherly grandmother who has taken care of them since their parents died. But the children do need a guardian, and in the dark days of World War II London, those are in short supply, especially if they hope to stay together. Could the mass wartime evacuation of children from London to the countryside be the answer? It's a preposterous plan, but off they go-- keeping their predicament a secret, and hoping to be placed in a temporary home that ends up lasting forever. Moving from one billet to another, the children suffer the cruel trickery of foster brothers, the cold realities of outdoor toilets and the hollowness of empty stomachs. But at least they find comfort in the village lending library-- a cozy shelter from the harshness of everyday life, filled with favorite stories and the quiet company of Nora Müller, the kind librarian. The children wonder if Nora could be the family they've been searching for. . . . But the shadow of the war, and the unknown whereaouts of Nora's German husband complicate matters. A Place to Hang the Moon is a story about the importance of family: the one you're given, and the one you choose. Filled with rich, sensory prose, allusions to classic children's stories like A Little Princess, Mary Poppins, and The Story of Ferdinand, this cozy tale with a classic feel is sure to warm your heart. Don't miss Kate Albus's Nothing Else But Miracles which takes place in New York City during WWII and was described as "historical fiction at its finest" in a starred review from School Library Journal. But when an unorthodox book dating from a forsaken past comes to light during one of his digs, bureaucracies and social critics prove less accommodating. Josiah's discovery pulls back the curtain on a lost age when truth was true and lies were not, when self-interest had its limits and faith had not yet been perverted and discredited. But is anyone prepared to reconsider that the past may have been more honorable than anyone wants to remember and more noble than the world that has replaced it? Or is the world still unprepared for the counterrevolutionary ideas the earth-shattering book reveals?

Download or read book Remembering Sharon written by Nick Pelino, Jr. and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07-17 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remembering Sharon is a play Nick wishes did not have to be written. It is a personal story. Sharon iswas a friend, even after all these years, it is still difficult to write. Putting Sharon in the past tense is not easy. This project, talking about this project, considering this project, wondering about it, planning it, thinking about it, outlining it, and shaping it has kept Sharon in my present for many years since her death, her murder. I dont like that reality. I often wonder what her life might have been how we may have grown as friends. Would we have grown closer or drifted apart? Friends do that. I have stayed close with the rest of her family. Was that because of her murder? Did her death bond us more significantly? These things, all these things became the foundation for Remembering Sharon. How can empathy be shown? Can it be shown? Should it be shown? What is tasteful? Is that really my job as a playwright? In past works that dealt with unsolved crime, Sharon was my silent motivation. It didnt quite get the word out as forcefully as I wanted my Hall-Mills play was a Hall-Mills play. I am still OK with that. I seemed to have a knack for this kind of thing. I brought up Sharon in every interview, but good writers stuck to the main subject. I had to accept the best way to bring attention to Sharon was to write about Sharon. Remember Sharon! So with this play, I am remembering Sharon. As audiences are told very quickly, Sharon was my friend who disappeared from her home two days before her sixteenth birthday in 1982. She was found murdered in a wooded area only a few yards away from her family home. Remembering Sharon is probably not just a play; it is an experience. It is a hope for an opportunity for a community to come together to talk about this loss and perhaps bring a resolution to this unsolved murder in contemporary 2012. It may also serve as a reminder to all of us that we must take care of our loved ones and talk talk! Talk about safety and common sense issues about safety and crime prevention and a better awareness of how we can keep ourselves and children safe!
