Early studies in gender, doctrine and politics of veiling appeared in the 1970s following the Islamic revival and ’re-veiling’ trends that were dramatically expressed by 1979’s Iranian Islamic revolution. In the 1990s, research focussed on the development of both an ’Islamic culture industry’ and greater urban middle class consumption of ’Islamic’ garments and dress styles across the Islamic world. In the last decade academics have studied Islamic fashion and marketing, the political role of the headscarf, the veiling of other religious groups such as Jews and Christians, and secular forms of modest dress. The ancient sculptures were copied extensively in reproductions of various sizes and patinas. The author traces the popularity of these copies in Europe and America. Also presented in the book is a technical study of the production techniques and materials of the sculptures, as well as of their modern restoration history. Scientific analyses and detailed photographs reveal both how the pieces were cast and pieced together in antiquity and how they were restored in the eighteenth century. Even though this collection has been known for two and a half centuries, this book covers for the first time the eclectic nature of the sculptures, their acutual condition, and their quality, pointing in some cases to mass production.

Islamic doctrine has enabled women to participate in battlefields, independently carry on trade and business, and, when circumstances demand it. The most outstanding achievement of early Islam concerning women was its strict prohibition of female infanticide. A preference for male babies was evidence of deep-seated bias against girls. Many of the revelations in the Qur'an were by nature reform-oriented, transforming critical aspects of pre-Islamic customary laws and practices in progressive ways and eliminating injustice for women. The book is a prism from which to view the Muslim feminist revolution. The author analyses how the patriarchal-oriented rulers and clerics have obliquely tried to roll back these reforms. But of late, women have finally been able to morph from their pathetic condition and redefine the contours of their gender space.
