  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 3642597734
  • Pages : 543 pages

Download or read book Inselbergs written by S. Porembski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inselbergs are isolated rock outcrops that stand out abruptly from surrounding plains. Despite the widespread occurrence of granite inselbergs throughout all climatic and vegetational zones, their remarkably rich plant life was largely neglected in the recent literature. This richly and partly in color illustrated volume provides a detailed survey of all major abiotic and biotic features characteristic for inselbergs. The extreme environmental conditions on inselbergs are described in depth as well as specific adaptive traits of rock outcrop plants including their morphological, anatomical and physiological responses. The diversity and structure of inselberg plant communities are examined on a global scale with detailed regional accounts for different tropical and temperate zones.

Book Tropical Forests of the Guiana Shield

Download or read book Tropical Forests of the Guiana Shield written by D. S. Hammond and published by CABI. This book was released on 2005 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Guiana Shield is an ancient geological formation located in the northern part of South America, covering an area of one million square kilometres. Despite its hostile environment, it is home to many unusual and highly specialized plants and animals, which constitute a rich area of biodiversity. Chapters in this book include hydrology, nutrient cycling, forest phenology, insect-plant interactions, forest microclimate, plant distributions, forest dynamics and conservation and management of flora and fauna. It provides a comprehensive and detailed review of the ecology, biology and natural history of the forests of the area.

Book A Monograph of the Genus Eperua Leguminosae Caesalpinioideae

Download or read book A Monograph of the Genus Eperua Leguminosae Caesalpinioideae written by Richard S. Cowan and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All available data are brought together in a monographic treatment of the legume genus Eperua. Eighteen taxa are considered of which four are described as new: E. duckeana, E. obtusata, E. grandiflora ssp. guyanensis, and E. jenmanii ssp. sandwithii. Also one new combination is made: E. glabriflora (Ducke) Cowan. In addition to gross morphology, anatomy of leaf epidermis and palynology of most of the species are presented for the first time. Pollen morphology is particularly instructive with respect to the classification derived principally from vegetative and floral morphology.

Book Criteria and Indicators for Sustainable Forest Management

Download or read book Criteria and Indicators for Sustainable Forest Management written by Robert John Raison and published by CABI. This book was released on 2001 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is increasing pressure on the forestry industry to adopt sustainable practices, but a lack of knowledge about how to facilitate this, and how to measure sustainability. This book reviews current thinking about scientifically based indicators, and sustainable management of natural forests and plantations. Information is applicable to boreal, temperate and tropical biomes. The contents have been developed from papers presented at a IUFRO conference held in Australia, in order to develop a state-of the art report on this subject.

Book Ecology of Halophytes

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert J. Mold
  • Publisher : Elsevier
  • Release : 2012-12-02
  • ISBN : 0323144373
  • Pages : 620 pages

Download or read book Ecology of Halophytes written by Robert J. Mold and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecology of Halophytes documents the proceedings of a symposium on the ecology of halophytes sponsored by the Physiological Ecology section of the Ecological Society of America, and held as a portion of the American Institute of Biological Sciences meetings in August 1972. The book considers the fundamentals of distribution, anatomy, and physiology of halophytes. It provides an overview of the role of the halophyte in ecosystems in various parts of the world. A section on habitat associations of halophytes considers the relation of the plants to other fauna and flora in natural systems. A final section deals with recent applied research related to halophytes and quantification of the impact of man on the ecology of halophytes. This text will be useful for various disciplines working in saline wetlands ecosystems. It is intended to serve land use planners, federal and state natural resources and transportation interests, and real estate developers in providing a comprehensive summary of the ""state of the art"" in understanding halophytic ecosystems. With a better fundamental knowledge of the system, the above mentioned professionals should be better able to plan activities and uses compatible with the natural halophytic ecosystem and avoid some of the past errors man has made.

Book Classification of Plant Communities

Download or read book Classification of Plant Communities written by R.H. Whittaker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The natural communities of the world are diverse, and many schools of ecology have developed classifications of communities in partial independence of one another. There is consequently a vast and widely dispersed literature on the classification of plant and animal communities, comprising divergent approaches of different schools and representing a great experiment on the usefulness of different possibilities for classification. The editor sought in a re view monograph of 1962 to summarize these schools and their history, and in 1973 published a treatise on 'Ordination and Clas sification of Communities' as volume 5 of the Handbook of Vegetation Science. We were fortunate, in preparing the latter work, to have a truly international panel of authors to discuss different major ap proaches to classification. This second edition of the book of 1973 is intended to make the work more widely available in a less expensive form as companion volumes on ordination and on classification of plant communities.
