Book The Vatican Connection

Download or read book The Vatican Connection written by Richard Hammer and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Edgar Award: The riveting account of an audacious fraud scheme that stretched from a Mafia hangout on the Lower East Side to the Vatican. With a round, open face and a penchant for tall tales, Matteo de Lorenzo resembled everyone’s kindly uncle. But Uncle Marty, as he was known throughout the Genovese crime family, was one of the New York mob’s top earners throughout the 1960s and ’70s, the mastermind of a billion-dollar trade in stolen and counterfeit securities. In the spring of 1972, de Lorenzo and his shrewd and ruthless business partner, Vincent Rizzo, traveled to Europe to discuss a plan to launder millions of dollars worth of phony securities. Shockingly, the plot involved Archbishop Paul Marcinkus, the scandal-plagued president of the Vatican Bank. Unbeknownst to de Lorenzo and Rizzo, however, the NYPD was already on the case—thanks to the crusading work of Det. Joseph Coffey. Coffey, the legendary New York policeman who investigated the Lufthansa heist and took the Son of Sam’s confession, first learned of the scheme in a wiretap related to the attempted mob takeover of the Playboy Club in Manhattan. From those unlikely beginnings, Detective Coffey worked tirelessly to trace the fraudulent stocks and bonds around the world and deep into the corridors of power in Washington, DC, and Rome. Meticulously researched and relentlessly gripping, The Vatican Connection is a true story of corruption and deceit, packed with “all the ingredients of a thriller” (San Francisco Chronicle).

Book excerpt: The Permanent Instruction of the Alta Vendita is a document, originally published in Italian in the 19th century, purportedly produced by the highest lodge of the Italian Carbonari and written by "Piccolo Tigre," codename for Giuseppe Mazzini. The document details an alleged Masonic plan to infiltrate the Catholic Church and spread liberal ideas within it. The Carbonari had strong similarities to Freemasonry and so the document is seen by some as a Masonic document. In the 19th century, Pope Pius IX[3] and Pope Leo XIII both asked for it to be published.

Download or read book THE VATICAN CONSPIRACY written by Peter Kross and published by Adventures Unlimited Press. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Vatican Conspiracy: Intrigue in St. Peter’s Square tells the untold story of the secret Vatican-US connection from World War II to the 1980s under President Reagan. You will learn a little-known story of an American military officer who was killed (some say by his own men) in Italy during the war, culminating in a congressional investigation when the war ended. You will learn of James Angleton’s work as an American spy in Italy during the war and his relationship with the Church, and how the OSS infiltrated agents into the Vatican to aid the efforts to oust Hitler. Kross then goes extensively into the so-called Rat Line which allowed Nazi leaders like Josef Mengele, Klaus Barbie and Adolf Eichmann to escape to South America with the help of the US. The book covers Operation Paperclip and Operation Safehaven in which Switzerland laundered money form Germany in order to pay that nation’s cost of the war. The final chapters delve into the most recent intrigues in the Vatican, including the attempted assassination of Pope John Paul II in Rome and who might have been behind it (the Soviet Union or Bulgaria), and the mysterious death of Pope John Paul I in Rome, who died after serving only 33 days in office. Also covered is the Vatican Bank scandal involving Roberto Calvi and an American Bishop named Paul Marcinkus. The final chapter involves the murders of two Swiss Guardsmen by one of their own men. This is a tale that most readers of history do not know, but one that must be told. History is never what it seems to be, not cut and dried, not exactly what we were led to believe.

Book excerpt: "Three popes have died in less than a year. Foul play has not been eliminated and is suspected by many. But before the Vatican can deal with these suspicions, there's something else to take care of--a new pope must be elected. After seventy-seven excruciating days of deliberation, the conclave of cardinals finally reaches its decision--and it's a shocker. Fro the first time in 1,000 years, a layman, from the US, will lead the Church. Before the white smoke clears the Sistine Chapel, it is obvious the papacy, and the world, will never be the same. The new pope, James I, shatter long-held positions and the accepted image of the Bishop of Rome. Not everyone is happy. Cardinal Manoles Sicoli, a fundamental doctrinaire who has long had his eyes on the papacy, fears James is the Antichrist. And he will stop at nothing to end James' reign."--Page 4 of cover.

Book excerpt: Why are so many scientists disappearing? And why is their research considered dangerous? The answer is hidden behind the walls of the Vatican where a power struggle is underway. Conservative Cardinals, who want to preserve the faith exactly as it is, are opposed by their liberal counterparts who want to modernize it to reflect current understanding. The liberals have secretly funded the scientists to prepare a report with their recommendations. The Pope, a conservative hardliner, appoints an authoritarian Ukrainian Cardinal, to make the problem go away. Together with a Soviet diplomat, a Russian interrogator and the Archdeacon of a fanatical religious sect, they devise a plan that will destroy the scientists as well as their reports. One by one they begin to disappear. The disappearances do not go unnoticed and are brought to the attention of Interpol. They assign an agent who follows the Archdeacon to a walled Castillo in Spain, where the researchers are being interrogated and tortured. From there the trail leads him to London, Toronto, Moscow and back to Rome. What he discovers culminates in a crisis that threatens not only the Papacy but the very existence of the Church itself. You remind me of the style of Ken Follett. I love the way you have been able to include the cultural trends in the various locations, and the theological issues that drive scholars to drink. Overall I would say that it is a great effort for a first novel. I hope there will more of the same to come. Rev. Charles F. Boyd, Pickering College, Newmarket

Book excerpt: Act of Faith: America's longest running criminal conspiracy perpetrated against children By: Stephen Rubino www.actoffaithbook.com About the Book In his debut novel, trial attorney Stephen Rubino takes the reader on an electrifying journey of deceit, intrigue, tragedy, passion and ultimate redemption. At the intersection of the sacred and the profane, Act of Faith dissects the Vatican’s complicity in America’s longest criminal conspiracy perpetrated against children. This multi-generational family saga is richly portrayed through an ensemble cast of unforgettable characters, revealing the secret world of the Vatican’s sheltering of sexual predators to avoid bringing scandal to the faithful. Act of Faith offers an unflinching account of the still emerging sexual abuse scandal plaguing the Catholic Church and its impact on the survivors and their families across America. The story chronicles the lives of siblings Francis and Elizabeth Natale, who suffer unspeakable psychological damage after being sexually abused by their trusted parish priest. As adults, Francis and Elizabeth become estranged, each hiding their secrets in dangerous double lives. He as a gifted pianist and sexually conflicted Catholic priest, she as a reckless but highly successful trial attorney. After resigning her partnership in a major New York City law firm, Elizabeth sets out to uncover the roots of the abuse scandal and to exact her personal revenge. On a serendipitous road trip across the country, Elizabeth confronts her lifelong demons and forms an unlikely alliance with Father Thomas Atkinson, her long lost high school love who has become a Vatican whistleblower. After a tense reunion with Francis, the trio enters the super-charged environment of high stakes litigation, exposing the Church’s centuries old practice of hiding sexual predators in plain sight from the religious faithful and law enforcement. Together, the trio brings to the courthouse steps the first Federal Civil Racketeering lawsuit against the Catholic Church.
