Book excerpt: An up-close look at the Germanic people who sacked Rome in the fifth century AD. On 31 December AD 406, a group of German tribes crossed the Rhine, pierced the Roman defensive lines, and began a rampage across Roman Gaul, sacking cities such as Metz, Arras, and Strasbourg. Foremost amongst them were the Vandals, and their search for a new homeland took them on the most remarkable odyssey. The Romans were unable to stop them and their closest allies, the Alans, marching the breadth of Gaul, crossing the Pyrenees, and making themselves masters of Spain. However, this kingdom of the Vandals and Alans soon came under intense pressure from Rome’s Visigothic allies. In 429, under their new king, Gaiseric, they crossed the straits of Gibraltar to North Africa. They quickly overran this rich Roman province and established a stable kingdom. Taking to the seas, they soon dominated the Western Mediterranean and raided Italy, famously sacking Rome itself in 455. Eventually, however, they were utterly conquered by Belisarius in 533 and vanished from history. Simon MacDowall narrates and analyzes these events, with particular focus on the evolution of Vandal armies and warfare.

Book The Vandals Crown

Download or read book The Vandals Crown written by Gregory J. Millman and published by Simon & Schuster. This book was released on 1995 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Vandals' Crown, Gregory Millman paints a vivid picture of the new revolutionaries, both the famous and the little known, and he reveals the inside story of the revolution that has stripped governments of their power to control money. Today, traders have taken the law into their own hands. Like vigilantes, they enforce fundamental economic laws not for love of law but for profit, regardless of what regulators or central bankers may think. They are the reason why the Japanese government was powerless to stop the collapse of the Tokyo stock market in 1990; why the concerted actions of all the Western European countries were unable to roll back a speculative attack on the European Monetary System in 1992; why the U.S. government was unable to stop the slide of the dollar in 1994; why Mexico, Orange County, and numerous corporate losses made dire headlines in 1994 and 1995. The new financial vigilantes move more than $1 trillion every day in currency alone - more than all the cars, wheat, oil, and other products traded in the so-called "real" economy. The Vandals' Crown may be the most important story in modern financial history.

Book Vanguard or Vandals

Download or read book Vanguard or Vandals written by Jon Abbink and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-29 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a range of original studies on one of the major challenges in Africa today: the controversial role of youth in politics, conflict and rebellious movements. The issue is not only the drafting of child soldiers into insurgent armies or predatory militias, as in Somalia, Sierra Leone or Congo, but, more generally, that of the problematic insertion of large numbers of young people in the socio-economic and political order of post-colonial Africa. Even educated youths are being confronted with a lack of opportunities, blocked social mobility, and despair about the future. African youth, while forming a numerical majority, largely feel excluded from power, are socio-economically marginalized, thwarted in their ambitions, and have little access to representative positions or political power.

Book City Builders And Vandals In Our Age

Download or read book City Builders And Vandals In Our Age written by Caleb Maupin and published by . This book was released on 2019-07-04 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chaos seems to be all around us. Living standards are dropping and unrest is rising in western countries amid a backdrop of rising tension around the world. Drawing from classical history, Rome, Greece, Mesopotamia, as well as geopolitics, mythology and a re-examination of Marxism, Caleb Maupin argues that there are two distinct drives within human beings, one that seeks to build and the other that seeks to plunder and destroy. In this book, the well-known journalist and political analyst examines the broken political compass and why the concepts of left and right are not as clear in the 21st century. Maupin also describes the crisis hanging over the global apparatus of production, as the irrational profit motive gets in the way of human creativity. This book points toward the way out of societal decay in the west, and to the underlying causes of the unfolding Eurasian renaissance. In an age cursed by pessimism, this book presents an optimistic view of the potential within technology and the computer revolution. From many different angles, Maupin points toward the hope for international cooperation and friendship with a win-win model of global trade. The book present an analysis of the Iran nuclear deal's demise, the efforts to crush Huawei Technologies and the Nordstream 2 natural gas pipeline, the rise of New Energy Vehicles, the contradictory behavior of the Trump White House, the rise of the New Right in Europe, the Bernie Sanders "Democratic Socialist" phenomena in America, and so much more. In his analysis, Maupin offers a repudiation of both post-modern liberal deconstruction and "greed is good" economic theories, arguing that the rational side of human beings will once again reassert itself in order to fulfill the dreams of peace and growth that seems to unite us all.
