Book Racial Identity Attitudes Perceived Barriers Career Self efficacy and Career Outcome Expectations Among African American Male Adolescents

Download or read book Racial Identity Attitudes Perceived Barriers Career Self efficacy and Career Outcome Expectations Among African American Male Adolescents written by Norman L. Townsel and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT) holds that self-efficacy and outcome expectations are primary predictors of career choice goals and actions, with contextual influences moderating those choices and actions. Racial identity research indicates that African American adolescents perceive more barriers than their White counterparts. The current study hypothesized that chronological age, racial identity attitudes, and the perception of barriers would be significant influences on self-efficacy and outcome expectations for African American adolescents. The study explored the research question using two separate stepwise regression analyses. The first analysis explored racial identity attitudes, age, and perceived barriers in relation to self efficacy. The second analysis utilized the same independent variables to assess their relationship to outcome expectations. Results of the first analysis found that 19% of the variance in career-related self-efficacy was explained by the variables age, the perception of barriers, and the racial identity attitude Internalization Multiculturalist Inclusive as measured by the Cross Racial Identity Scale (Worrell, Vandiver, & Cross, 2004). A significant model for the second analysis exploring the relationship of the independent variables to outcome expectations was not obtained. The racial identity attitude Immersion-Emersion Anti-White was the only variable related to career outcome expectations. Findings and implications for future research are discussed.

Book The Impact of Standardized Testing on the Racial Identity Development of Black Males Attending Middle School

Download or read book The Impact of Standardized Testing on the Racial Identity Development of Black Males Attending Middle School written by Kathryn Procope and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The zero-sum game of education is supported by the implementation standardized testing in a manner that disenfranchises Black students. While assessments are accountability tools for ensuring rigorous teaching and for measuring student learning, the impact of these tests on students' identity needs to be examined. The demands of a knowledge-based economy lend themselves to an overwhelming emphasis on grades and test scores and neglect the development of students' cognitive reasoning, social skills and their sense of self. Research has shown that standardized testing does not promote educational equity and perpetuates oppression of Black people (Toldson, 2019). As Black men navigate a society that vilifies them as dangerous criminals and socially isolates them, this same attitude can be found in the classroom where Black boys often experience the low expectations that impact their self-esteem and identity. These perceptions carry over into the self-concept of Black adolescent boys when they take standardized tests. Racial identity development is impacted by the encounters that Black adolescent boys have in society and in schools. The impact of testing on their racial identity and the importance of racial identity development to their academic and overall success must be examined to provide them with equitable academic opportunities. In this mixed methods study, quantitative data from the Racial Identity Attitudes Scale (RIAS), standardized test data from NWEA Measures of Academic Progress, and standardized alternative assessment data, is intersected with qualitative data from interviews with Black middle school boys, to examine the impact of their experiences with standardized testing on their racial identity. The intervention involves the exploration of alternative ways to assessing student learning that affirms racial identity and suggests that schools reexamine how academic progress is measured.

Book Redirecting the Pipeline

Download or read book Redirecting the Pipeline written by Patrice Leverett and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African American students comprise a disproportionate number of discipline referrals across school levels. These numbers reach a peak in middle schools across the United States. The correlation between referrals, dropout rates, and ultimately incarceration rates has led to the development of the term "School to Prison Pipeline." Some schools have adopted a Positive Behavior Support (PBS) framework to select interventions across three tiers: universal, targeted, and individualized interventions to address these gaps. However, the gaps in behavioral outcomes remain. Despite the existence of several hypotheses about the causes, there is a shortage of research on student perceptions of the differences and fewer studies that explore the acceptability of intervention options among African American males. This exploratory study uses Grounded Theory methodology to examine African-American, adolescent males' perceptions of PBS/PBIS practices. Students were interviewed using a researcher created, treatment acceptability interview protocol to identify both the feasibility and likelihood of acceptance by adolescent males from the African American community. Implications for future training and practice are discussed.

Book excerpt: This transcendental phenomenological study examined how Black fathers' perception of their own and their father's fatherhood impacts persistence in community college. This study interviewed six Black male community college students with children in New York State. The study posed three research questions: (1) How do Black male college students experience fatherhood (from a son's perspective) facilitating or impeding community college completion? (2) How do Black male college students experience their fatherhood (from a father's perspective) facilitating or impeding community college completion? and (3) In the experience of Black male college students, how do community colleges support Black students who are fathers? Findings show that fatherhood acts as a catalyst to community college completion for Black student-fathers, that children are a central motivation for persistence for Black student-fathers, and support systems in community colleges are lacking for Black student-fathers. The six emergent themes included parenting matters, impenetrable lifelong connections, resilience and progression, desire to be living proof, typical unnecessary obstacles, and true knowledge and acceptance. Recommendations for practice include recognizing Black student-fathers, implementing support programs specific to Black student-fathers, and actively recruiting Black male faculty and support staff. Recommendations for future research include broadening research nationally, including 4-year institutions, and examining student-fathers of different races.
