Book A History of Women in Ireland 1500 1800

Download or read book A History of Women in Ireland 1500 1800 written by Mary O'Dowd and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-17 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first general survey of the history of women in early modern Ireland. Based on an impressive range of source material, it presents the results of original research into women’s lives and experiences in Ireland from 1500 to 1800. This was a time of considerable change in Ireland as English colonisation, religious reform and urbanisation transformed society on the island. Gaelic society based on dynastic lordships and Brehon Law gave way to an anglicised and centralised form of government and an English legal system.

Book Anna of Saxony

  • Author : Ingrun Mann
  • Publisher : Winged Hussar Publishing

Download or read book Anna of Saxony written by Ingrun Mann and published by Winged Hussar Publishing. This book was released on 2017-01-23 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since her early youth at the glittering court of Dresden, Anna had been known as a difficult child and troublemaker. Servants complained about her violent outbursts, while courtiers bemoaned her general disregard for aristocratic female etiquette. Upon reaching her teenage years, the princess’ guardians decided that Saxony’s enfant terrible should leave home as quickly as possible by marrying a foreign suitor in a preferably far-away land. Enter William of Orange: handsome, charming, and heir to one of the Netherlands’ largest estates. The fact that he was also a profligate partier and lover of women was conveniently overlooked. Anna immediately fell for the Dutch bon vivant despite warnings from a few well-meaning relatives. For one, William was a Catholic, while Anna adhered to the Protestant teachings of Martin Luther, critical voices cautioned, correctly predicting future trouble for the princess in the Catholic Netherlands. Furthermore, the prince’s liege lord, the fanatical Philip II of Spain, very much disapproved of a match between his premier vassal and a “Lutheran heretic.” There was also the issue of plain Anna’s growing obsession with the roguish William; an obsession that was not reciprocated. In the end, the impetuous princess threw caution to the wind. No other than William would do for a husband, she insisted, while publicly announcing that “every vein in my body heartily loves him.”

Book The People s Poet

Download or read book The People s Poet written by Alan Chedzoy and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2011-10-21 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born the child of an agricultural labourer in Dorset's Blackmore Vale, by self-education William Barnes (1801-1886) rose to be a lawyer's clerk, a schoolmaster, a much-loved clergyman, and a scholar who could read over seventy languages. He also became the finest example of an English poet writing in a rural dialect. In this book, Alan Chedzoy shows how, uniquely, he presented the lives of pre-industrial rural people in their own language. He also recounts how Barnes's linguistic studies enabled him to defend the controversial notion that the dialect of the labouring people of Wessex was the purest form of English. Serving both as an anthology and an account of how the poems came to be written, this biography is essential reading for anyone who wants to discover more about the man who, in an obituary, Thomas Hardy described as 'probably the most interesting link between present and past life that England possessed'.

Book Under the Blue Skies of Naples

Download or read book Under the Blue Skies of Naples written by Frank Palescandolo and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2001-07-18 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mark Vitelli, age 25, scion of a successful manufacturer of pizza: The Perfetto Pizza Company of Milwaukee, is deputized by his father to introduce the fast food pizza to Italy beginning in Naples. He is in charge of six huge refrigerated containers of pizza dough, and thousands of frozen individual pizza pie samples stowed in the refrigerated hold of a freighter whose direct port of call is Naples. On landing, Mark is greeted by Katerina Smith, a rep of the Wall Street underwriter of this enterprise. The proposal meets with violent opposition by two groups: The Anti-Blue Sky (anti cielo azzurro) movement that wishes to violently disassociate Naples from folklore kitsch and emblematic buffoonery of the pizza mystique. Their manifesto reads radically like that of the once Italian Futurists, the Anti-Blue Sky wish is to drag Naples into the 21st Century, an example: that the Sorrentine Peninsula be turned into a Silicon Valley, etc. Another group objecting is the Slow Food Movement against fast food emporiums, especially shoddy pizza palaces in the environs of Naples, and the cielo azzurro Pro-Blue Sky is championing the ancestral culture and charms of Naples. Mark, after many hilarious tries is blocked which leaves him footloose in Italy.
