Book Isotopes of Helium Hydrogen and Carbon as Groundwater Tracers in Aquifers Along the Colorado River

Download or read book Isotopes of Helium Hydrogen and Carbon as Groundwater Tracers in Aquifers Along the Colorado River written by Samuel Ainsworth Haber and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isotopes of hydrogen, carbon, helium, and neon in groundwater from 20 wells in the Lower Colorado River Valley (LCRV) are presented, with the aim of determining the age and mixing characteristics of the groundwater. Groundwaters from thirteen wells have measurable tritium and young 14C ages, suggesting mixing with at least a portion of recently-recharged (post-1952) groundwater. Groundwaters from the other seven wells are characterized as many thousands of years old and lack discernible tritium, which indicates no mixing with younger water. Carbon-14 ages of the groundwater indicate flow is away from the river (i.e. a leaking river). Dissolved helium concentrations were resolved into components associated with solubility equilibration, air entrainment, mantle-derivation, in-situ production within the aquifer, and extraneous crustal fluxes. Helium concentrations from the 20 groundwaters range from 0.55 to 69.8 x 10−7 cm3 STP g−1 H20, or from close to air-equilibration values to 100-times saturation, with corresponding 3He/4He ratios falling between 5.07 and 0.17 times the atmospheric value. This large range of values is indicative of the two extreme types of groundwater : (1) young, tritium-rich waters and (2) old, 4He-rich waters. A whole crustal He flux, averaging 3x10−8 cm3 STP cm−2 year−1, was determined by constraining the 4He ages to match the 14C ages. A presence of mantle gases in which at least 1.4% of the helium is derived from a mantle flux is significant because the aquifers are at least 75 km from the San Andreas Fault Complex.

Book Using Isotopes for Design and Monitoring of Artificial Recharge Systems

Download or read book Using Isotopes for Design and Monitoring of Artificial Recharge Systems written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by . This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication discusses several theoretical aspects important to the understanding, planning and monitoring of AR and ASR schemes and presents a selected number of examples illustrating the usefulness of isotopes and other tracers. One section presents the list of available isotope tracers, indicating the type of information that can be obtained from each. The case studies presented in this publication illustrate the use of these tools in the different stages of AR and ASR schemes.

Book Radiogenic and Stable Isotope and Hydrogeochemical Investigation of Groundwater Pajarito Plateau and Surrounding Areas New Mexico

Download or read book Radiogenic and Stable Isotope and Hydrogeochemical Investigation of Groundwater Pajarito Plateau and Surrounding Areas New Mexico written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From October 2004 through February 2006, Los Alamos National Laboratory, the New Mexico Environment Department-Department of Energy Oversight Bureau, and the United States Geological Survey conducted a hydrochemical investigation. The purpose of the investigation was to evaluate groundwater flow paths and determine groundwater ages using tritium/helium-3 and carbon-14 along with aqueous inorganic chemistry. Knowledge of groundwater age and flow paths provides a technical basis for selecting wells and springs for monitoring. Groundwater dating is also relevant to groundwater resource management, including aquifer sustainability, especially during periods of long-term drought. At Los Alamos, New Mexico, groundwater is either modern (post-1943), submodern (pre-1943), or mixed (containing both pre- and post-1943 components). The regional aquifer primarily consists of submodern groundwater. Mixed-age groundwater results from initial infiltration of surface water, followed by mixing with perched alluvial and intermediate-depth groundwater and the regional aquifer. No groundwater investigation is complete without using tritium/helium-3 and carbon-14 dating methods to quantify amounts of modern, mixed, and/or submodern components present in samples. Computer models of groundwater flow and transport at Los Alamos should be calibrated to groundwater ages for perched intermediate zones and the regional aquifer determined from this investigation. Results of this study clearly demonstrate the occurrence of multiple flow paths and groundwater ages occurring within the Sierra de los Valles, beneath the Pajarito Plateau, and at the White Rock Canyon springs. Localized groundwater recharge occurs within several canyons dissecting the Pajarito Plateau. Perched intermediate-depth groundwater and the regional aquifer beneath Pueblo Canyon, Los Alamos Canyon, Sandia Canyon, Mortandad Canyon, Pajarito Canyon, and Canon de Valle contain a modern component. This modern component consists of tritium, nitrate, perchlorate, chromate, boron, uranium, and/or high explosive compounds. It is very unlikely that there is only one transport or travel time, ranging from 25 to 62 years, for these conservative chemicals migrating from surface water to the regional water table. Lengths of groundwater flow paths vary within deep saturated zones containing variable concentrations of tritium. The 4-series springs discharging within White Rock Canyon contain a modern component of groundwater, primarily tritium. Average groundwater ages for the regional aquifer beneath the Pajarito Plateau varied from 565 to 10,817 years, based on unadjusted carbon-14 measurements.

Book Environmental Isotopes in Hydrogeology

Download or read book Environmental Isotopes in Hydrogeology written by Ian D. Clark and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1997-07-23 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Groundwater is an increasingly important resource to human populations around the world, and the study and protection of groundwater is an essential part of hydrogeology - the subset of hydrology that concentrates on the subsurface. Environmental isotopes, naturally occurring nuclides in water and solutes, have become fundamental tools for tracing the recharge, history, and contamination of groundwater.
