Book A Classification System to Describe Workpieces

Download or read book A Classification System to Describe Workpieces written by W. R. Macconnell and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-01-22 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Classification System to Describe Workpieces provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects and principles of coding. This book discusses the various applications of the classification system of coding. Organized into three chapters, this book begins with an overview of the requirements of a system of classification pertaining adequately and equally to design, production, and work planning. This text then examines the purpose of the classification system in production to determine the most suitable means of machining a component. Other chapters consider the optimal utilization of machines, which comes within the scope of production control. This book discusses as well the rotational components that are separated into segments after rotational machining are rotational components with deviations. The final chapter deals with rotational components with cast, forged, or welded stiffening or with recesses not affecting the function of the components. This book is a valuable resource for engineers involved in machine tool industries.

Book excerpt: Every identifiable industry in the U.S. is organized into a major category of related industries and given a specific code number. These codes are called Standard Industrial Classification codes and this manual contains them all. The codes relate to an organizational system used by many professionals such as bankers, accountants, economists, and many more.

Book Expansion of Group Technology Part Coding Based on Functionality

Download or read book Expansion of Group Technology Part Coding Based on Functionality written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roup Technology (GT) has traditionally been a manufacturing philosophy in which parts are identified and grouped together to take advantage of their similarities in manufacturing and design. Similar parts are arranged into part families. In case of manufacturing, since each family possesses similar manufacturing characteristics, therefore the processing of each member of a family is similar. However, in case of design, Group Technology's use has been limited to standardization of parts and design retrieval only. For example, a designer faced with the task of developing a new part can use the design-retrieval system to determine if a similar part is already in existence. A simple change in an existing part would be much less time consuming than designing from scratch. But this does not contribute to the designing of innovative new products in any way. However, the advent of modern concept of functional reasoning in design provides a great opportunity for exploitation of GT classification techniques. The idea behind designing a product as per functionality is that, once the designer has been able to identify the intended function, he/she can expand it into sub-functions and subsequently map those sub-functions with components capable of fulfilling them. This thesis intends to fill the vast existing gap between functional requirements (sub-functions) and actual embodiments (workparts) which satisfy those functions. It enhances the GT classification of various parts on the basis of their functional applications. The classification provides the designers an important resource for selecting various parts of a product during the initial design phase. It expands the scope and utility of GT part coding and makes it more sensitive. Thus the benefits which accrue from this classification include: providing a design database, significant reduction in design time and effort, providing innovative design solutions, allowing maximum design freedom, avoiding design duplication and encouraging standards to develop. The classification is merged with the existing GT coding systems and hence retains the advantages of a conventional GT code. The underlying concepts, development and application of the new system have been discussed in detail during the course of the thesis.

Book Fundamentals of a Group Technology Electronics Classification and Coding System Summary of Survey Findings

Download or read book Fundamentals of a Group Technology Electronics Classification and Coding System Summary of Survey Findings written by Peter Chevalier and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Contract required OIR to identify the Fundamental Characteristics of a Group Technology Electronics Classification and Coding System (ECACS). This document reports the activities and results of the contract. Group Technology is rapidly becoming recognized as a major factor in the integration of Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Manufacturing. A Group Technology classification and coding system is used as the common identifier for accessing integrated and/or multiple databases. In order to apply Group Technology principles to electronics manufacture, the logical first step is to develop an ECACS. However, before code development can begin, it is necessary to define the specific information which should be captured by the code. OIR has surveyed twenty-six companies with the objective of identifying: The primary and secondary information vital to an ECACS; and The areas of greatest interest for the application of an ECACS. The concensus of the respondents, believed the primary advantages of using an ECACS, included; lower overall product costs; increased manufacturing efficiency; shortened elapsed times between design and production; better utilization of existing designs and processes; and increased design productivity.
