Download or read book The Use of a Woody Plant Nursery in Herbicide Research written by Rodney W. Bovey and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An irrigated woody plant nursery was established in 1963 at the Texas A&M Research and Extension Center near Bryan, Texas, to evaluate new herbicides, herbicide mixtures, formulations, carriers, adjuvants, and spray volumes for brush control. Information was also obtained on the propagation, growth habits, phenology, and physiology of a "number of woody species that are primary weed problems on rangelands of the Southwest--honey mesquite, huisache, live oak, Macartney rose, whitebrush, winged elm, saw greenbrier, and loblolly pine. The nursery is useful for herbicide research since less space is required for comparable treatments than in field sites, several woody species may be grown in the same area, and nursery-grown and natural stands of brush respond similarly to the same herbicide treatments. Conventional land preparation and weed control practices are required for best survival of the brush. Most woody plants can be treated with herbicides within 1 year after planting. Data on various herbicides, herbicide mixtures, formulations, and adjuvants applied at several rates, dates, and years were obtained. Picloram proved to be one of the more effective herbicides studied on most brush species. Some surfactants and diesel oil carriers enhanced the activity of herbicides on some species.
Download or read book Woody Plants and Woody Plant Management written by Rodney W. Bovey and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2001-03-29 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A presentation of strategies for managing woody plants and using research data to select the most appropriate control methods. It analyzes the responses of over 370 North American woody plants to commercially available herbicides. The authors provide methods to manage woody plants that interfere with recreation, watershed yield, animal and plant diversity, resource conservation, wildlife and livestock needs, and wood production on grazing, forest, and related land.

Download or read book Mesquite written by Rodney W. Bovey and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-30 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global problem or treasure? This question has accompanied the widespread and controversial mesquite tree wherever it grows and is studied around the world. In this comprehensive reference to the genus Prosopis, rangeland scientist Rodney Bovey has gathered and synthesized years of research in a book that reflects our current state of knowledge about the biology, morphology, and management of mesquite. Environmentally adaptive, the mesquite is considered by many to be an invasive or a pest species, and Bovey addresses the concerns about mesquite encroachment worldwide. But he also explains its ecological importance in the prevention of erosion and desertification and in providing food and habitat for wildlife. In addition, Bovey traces the uses of mesquite by humans and discusses the economics of growing and harvesting mesquite. A handy guide to the names, locations, distributions, habitat, structure, and uses of several species of mesquite is included in this benchmark publication for ecologists, range managers, biologists, landowners, and students of agriculture and ecosystem science.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past 50 years, triazines have made a great impact on agriculture and world hunger by assisting in the development of new farming methods, providing greater farming and land use capabilities, and increasing crop yields. Triazines are registered in over 80 countries and save billions of dollars a year. The Triazine Herbicides is the one book that presents a comprehensive view of the total science and agriculture of these chemicals. With emphasis on how the chemicals are studied and developed, reviewed, and used at the agricultural level this book provides valuable insight into the benefits of triazine herbicides for sustainable agriculture. - Presents previously unpublished information on the discovery, development and marketing of herbicides - Includes a vital section on the origin, use, economics and fate of triazine herbicides - Covers benefits of triazines in corn and sorghum, sugarcane, citrus, fruit and nut crops - Establishes best management practice and environmental benefits of use in conservation tillage
