Jakes, bestselling author of Destiny In a remarkable true story of faith and blessings, a mother tells of her sickly young daughter, how she survived a dangerous accident, her visit to Heaven and the inexplicable disappearance of the symptoms of her chronic disease. Annabel Beam spent most of her childhood in and out of hospitals with a rare and incurable digestive disorder that prevented her from ever living a normal, healthy life. One sunny day when she was able to go outside and play with her sisters, she fell three stories headfirst inside an old, hollowed-out tree, a fall that may well have caused death or paralysis. Implausibly, she survived without a scratch. While unconscious inside the tree, with rescue workers struggling to get to her, she visited heaven. After being released from the hospital, she defied science and was inexplicably cured of her chronic ailment. Miracles from Heaven will change how we look at the world around us and reinforce our belief in God and the afterlife.

And only the right one will do… Thrown in her path by a meddling marchioness, James finds himself under sensual siege from a tiny, flirtatious sprite who puts both his heart and his vow to remain unwed at risk. And when scandal looms, he learns the hard way that a man can resist only so long before the indomitable Miss Darling gets her way.

From January to the end of March, I gained some spiritual healing. The friends I made at Kansas City, was overwhelming, such as my roommates, the Simeon, was some ways liked family to me. Early morning, we had classes together in one of the building. Mostly guest speakers from the house of payer. Our main focus was 24/7 prayer in the prayer room. By one o' clock, shared the same lecture hall, with the FSM classes. There's time, we went on outing, such as feeding the homeless, street evangelist, for example, spreading the good news during the Saint Patrict Day Parade. Whenever someone needed housing or finance support, I hop often came through to assisted us. There's moment where people hurt others by their actions or words, also needed to understand the international house of prayer not considered heaven, just a temporary place, where, individuals get some, either physical emotional pains was healed. "Miracles at I hop wasn't just Johnny Wong miracles, but everybody miracles, women, men, girls and guys who lay hands to prayer over my mental conditions. Whenever anybody go out of their way, either offering me a place to stay, just asking how I am doing, even giving a ride to the supermarket, to FSM classes and to conference was a big help. The Saturday home group, the Metro Church was a great time, having a wonderful meal together, laughing talking with each others. Funny jokes about I hop, not a whole a lot of people, admired New Yorker, Chinese, Boston accent. I hope this book, would be enjoyable for everybody at the international house of prayer. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a tiny Italian village, life in the 1950s is a daily pageant of small human dramas. There are lippy signoras and earthy farmworkers. There is a coffin maker, a silkworm farmer and those who catch frogs for the town’s local delicacy: frog risotto. And then there’s Pistola, a teenage boy in love with his second cousin Teresa, a girl who is sadly destined to marry the village thug. To escape his heartache, young Pistola accepts the offer of a lifetime: to travel to South Africa to work on the trains. In lively Johannesburg, he and a group of compatriots are trained as stewards and taught to speak English – and Afrikaans. It’s not all work, mind you. The Italians set up home in Hillbrow and go partying in Sophiatown with the likes of Miriam Makeba. When Pistola falls for the spunky Malikah, a political activist, the apartheid police watch every breath of their passionate, illicit relationship. Flash forward a few years, when Pistola, no longer the gauche village boy, must return home to make a decision that will define his future. Witty, affectionate and vivid, this coming-of-age novel pays homage to the 110 young Italian men who were recruited to work on the South African Railways and introduced Italian cuisine to the nation.

Download or read book Miracles on the Water written by Tom Nagorski and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unforgettable story of children in wartime, of heroism at sea, and--above all--of courage and the power of the human spirit. On September 17, 1940, at a little after ten at night, a German submarine torpedoed the passenger liner S.S. City of Benares in the North Atlantic. There were 406 people on board, but the ship's prized passengers were 90 children whose parents had elected to send their boys and girls away from Great Britain to escape the ravages of World War II. They were considered lucky, headed for quiet, peaceful, and relatively bountiful Canada. The Benares sank in half an hour, in a gale that sent several of her lifeboats pitching into the frigid sea. They were more than five hundred miles from land, three hundred miles from the nearest rescue vessel. Miracles on the Water tells the astonishing story of the survivors--not one of whom had any reasonable hope of rescue as the ship went down. The initial "miracle" involves one British destroyer's race to the scene, against time and against the elements; the second is the story of Lifeboat 12, missed by the destroyer and left out on the water, 46 people jammed in a craft built and stocked for 30. Those people lasted eight days on little food and tiny rations of drinking water. The survivors have grappled ever since with questions about the ordeal: Should the Benares have been better protected? How and why did they persevere? What role did faith and providence play in the outcome? Based on first-hand accounts from the child survivors and other passengers, including the author's great-uncle, Miracles on the Water brings us the story of the attack on the Benares and the extraordinary events that followed. Tom Nagorski is currently the Executive Vice President of the Asia Society following a three-decade career in journalism - having served most recently as Managing Editor for International Coverage at ABC News. Nagorski has won eight Emmy awards and the Dupont Award for excellence in international coverage, as well as a fellowship from the Henry Luce Foundation. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife and two children.

Book excerpt: It begins when a vision appears in a carwash window in the tiny, dusty desert town of Infidelity, a blip on the map just outside of Joshua Tree, California. Seven-year-old Luz Reyes, whose family was killed by death squads in her native land and whose mother is gravely ill, is the first to see it. Then Walt Adair, the divorced owner of the carwash. Then Zoe Luedke, the golden-haired stranger in search of her runaway husband. And even the child's skeptic mother, Josephina Reyes, sees it. A crowd gathers, and others in the town see something as well, but no two people see the same thing. Though the priest, Father Bill, tries to prevent the vision from taking hold, even he seems to fall under its power. At first, it brings wonderful things: healings, peace, a kind of happiness that the people of Infidelity have never known. Then Luz's extraordinary powers begin to reveal themselves. There is an unexplained death, and the town begins to turn against her and those who have gathered around the miracle child. In the chaos that follows, people struggle to hold onto the beauty that came into their lives through Luz and the window even as they ask, Were they deluded or duped—or were they given a great gift? Book Barbara Stanwyck

Download or read book Barbara Stanwyck written by Dan Callahan and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2012-02-03 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barbara Stanwyck (1907–1990) rose from the ranks of chorus girl to become one of Hollywood's most talented leading women—and America's highest-paid woman in the mid-1940s. Shuttled among foster homes as a child, she took a number of low-wage jobs while she determinedly made the connections that landed her in successful Broadway productions. Stanwyck then acted in a stream of high-quality films from the 1930s through the 1950s. Directors such as Cecil B. DeMille, Fritz Lang, and Frank Capra treasured her particular magic. A four-time Academy Award nominee, winner of three Emmys and a Golden Globe, she was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Academy. Dan Callahan considers both Stanwyck's life and her art, exploring her seminal collaborations with Capra in such great films as Ladies of Leisure, The Miracle Woman, and The Bitter Tea of General Yen; her Pre-Code movies Night Nurse and Baby Face; and her classic roles in Stella Dallas, Remember the Night, The Lady Eve, and Double Indemnity. After making more than eighty films in Hollywood, she revived her career by turning to television, where her role in the 1960s series The Big Valley renewed her immense popularity. Callahan examines Stanwyck's career in relation to the directors she worked with and the genres she worked in, leading up to her late-career triumphs in two films directed by Douglas Sirk, All I Desire and There's Always Tomorrow, and two outrageous westerns, The Furies and Forty Guns. The book positions Stanwyck where she belongs—at the very top of her profession—and offers a close, sympathetic reading of her performances in all their range and complexity.
