Book excerpt: Was your pocket "picked" during the Great Recession of 2008? Did you take a hit on your savings or retirement or maybe even lost your home? Ever wonder how that could happen? Ever thought about getting revenge on those who snatched your purse strings? Well, where our federal government failed to protect its citizens from such outright theft, Professor Kendrick Laberday is more than happy to take up the slack. In his unique and most deadly brand of justice, the disarmingly charming but violently sociopathic professor is intent on dispatching in a very public manner those who he believes played a part in stealing his money. The courtroom? Very public settings, as the point is to try these criminals in front of the good citizenry of our country. The judge and jury? Kendrick will be happy to handle those duties. The punishment? To say the least, unique and administered in a way that only the dark mind of Kendrick could configure. The thrills and chills of these strange high-wire acts can be found in only one circus. Welcome, all, to Professor Kendrick Laberday's circus of justice. Following the professor's deadly trail, which provides for more twists and turns than the Mississippi River, are Minneapolis Police Department investigators Mark Truitt and Sylvia "Sylkie" Maune. The detectives have no idea what they're in for as the case becomes more puzzling the deeper they dig, even, at times, swerving too close to home. More and more ugly facts about the self-described "ringmaster" bubble to the surface as the case deepens and push the investigators ever farther into the murky world of the professor's dark circus.

Download or read book Unsolved London Murders written by Jonathan Oates and published by Grub Street Publishers. This book was released on 2009-03-19 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The real-life murder mysteries that rocked London between two world wars—from the author of Unsolved Murders of Victorian and Edwardian London. Unsolved crimes have a special fascination, none more so than unsolved murders. The shock of the crime itself and the mystery surrounding it, the fear generated by the awareness a killer on the loose, the insight the cases give into outdated police methods, and the chance to speculate about the identity of the killer after so many years have passed—all these aspects of unsolved murder cases make them compelling reading. In this companion volume to his bestselling Unsolved Murders of Victorian and Edwardian London, Jonathan Oates has selected over twenty haunting, sometimes shocking, cases from the period between the two world wars. Included are the shooting of PC James Kelly in Gunnersbury, violent deaths associated with Irish Republican Army conspiracies, the stabbing of the French acrobat Martial Lechevalier in Piccadilly, the strychnine poisoning of egg-seller Kusel Behr, the killing by arsenic of three members of a Croydon family, and, perhaps most gruesome of all, the case of the unidentified body parts found at Waterloo Station. Jonathan Oates describes each of these crimes in precise, forensic detail. His case studies shed light on the lives of the victims and summon up the ruthless, sometimes lethal character of London itself.

Download or read book The Art of Collectivity written by Jennifer Beth Spiegel and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2019-09-12 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amidst epidemics of youth alienation and cultural polarization, community-based artistic practices are sprouting up around the world as antidotes to policies of austerity and social exclusion. Rejecting the radical individualism of the neoliberal era, many artistic projects promote collectivity and togetherness in navigating challenges and constructing shared futures. The Art of Collectivity is about how one such creative social program deployed this approach in service of a post-neoliberal vision. Focusing on a national social circus initiative launched by a newly elected Ecuadorean government to help actualize its “citizens' revolution,” the book explores the intersection between global cultural politics, participatory arts, collective health, and social transformation. The authors include scholars and practitioners of community arts, humanities, social sciences, and health sciences from the Global North and Global South. Sensitive to hierarchical binaries such as research/practice, north/south, and art/science, they work together to provide a multifaceted analysis of the way cultural politics shape policy, pedagogy, and aesthetic sensibilities, as well as their socio-cultural and health-related effects. The largest study of social circus to date, combining detailed quantitative, qualitative, and arts-based research, The Art of Collectivity is a timely contribution to the study of cultural policies, critical pedagogies, collective art-making, and community development.
Download or read book Gangsters to Governors written by David Clary and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2018 Current Events/Social Change Book Award from the Next Generation Indie Book Awards Winner of the 2018 Bronze Current Events Book Award from the Independent Publisher Book Awards Generations ago, gambling in America was an illicit activity, dominated by gangsters like Benny Binion and Bugsy Siegel. Today, forty-eight out of fifty states permit some form of legal gambling, and America’s governors sit at the head of the gaming table. But have states become addicted to the revenue gambling can bring? And does the potential of increased revenue lead them to place risky bets on new casinos, lotteries, and online games? In Gangsters to Governors, journalist David Clary investigates the pros and cons of the shift toward state-run gambling. Unearthing the sordid history of America’s gaming underground, he demonstrates the problems with prohibiting gambling while revealing how today’s governors, all competing for a piece of the action, promise their citizens payouts that are rarely delivered. Clary introduces us to a rogue’s gallery of colorful characters, from John “Old Smoke” Morrissey, the Irish-born gangster who built Saratoga into a gambling haven in the nineteenth century, to Sheldon Adelson, the billionaire casino magnate who has furiously lobbied against online betting. By exploring the controversial histories of legal and illegal gambling in America, he offers a fresh perspective on current controversies, including bans on sports and online betting. Entertaining and thought-provoking, Gangsters to Governors considers the past, present, and future of our gambling nation. Author's website (http://www.davidclaryauthor.com)
